Is Nigeria Doomed?

At the moment oil is trading at $136.61 a barrel. From the 80's to 2003, oil was trading at less than $25 a barrel. This year, the price of oil has increased sharply  from $100 a barrel on 2 January to a peak of $139.89 on June 16th 2008 before settling at $136.61 today (so far anyway). I don't know about Nigeria, but here in the west there is a lot of talk by consumers about cleaner, cheaper and renewable energy. I am of the belief that in the next ten years (unless there's some kind of miracle), automobile and jet engine manufacturers would have found a cheaper, more efficient and more reliable way to power their automobiles thus reducing dependence on foreign oil from countries like Nigeria. Currently in Nigeria, oil provides 20% of our GDP, 95%(!!!!!!!) of foreign exchange earnings, and about 80%(!!!!!!!) of budgetary revenues. My point is this, with nothing to fall back on in the event of a crash in the oil industry, isn't it time our government tried to diversify our economy. I think in the next ten years, the government should try to reduce our foreign exchange earnings frotm oil to about 40% of the total and encourage more exporting of cash crops like we did in the past. Even if the oil sector doesn't come to a halt, we still stand to gain from a more robust and diversified economy. Another thing I feel needs to be done if the Niger Delta crisis is resolved and we still have relative political stability would be to try to develop our manufacturing sector by providing training and apprenticeships to Nigerians, if we can do this we would become a destination for outsourced production lines which would further boost our economy. Do you thing all this will be possible or is Nigeria doomed. I'm not an economist, I'm an undergraduate mechanical engineering student so I may be speaking complete nonsense but I hope I'm not.

Any country that CANNOT provide usable electricity, FOR WHATEVER REASON, after nearly a half-century of independence from colonial rule, is by any definition a doomed and clinically dead country, since human civilisation simply cannot exist without electrical power.

Nigeria is in its death throes, with autopsy being the only applicable analysis available now to shed light on the cause of its incurable and terminal pathology.

My dear Denuda,

You are a typical doomed Nigerian; very comfortable throwing insults at any given time.

One of the reasons Nigeria is doomed is because people like you who happen to be the majority in Nigeria, believe one can only make it abroad by peddling drugs and being a fraudster.

Having undertaking a 6 months course in US, i dont think getting a visa back will be a problem for me. As for Germany, i wonder what you want me to go and do there. Drugs?

China may not be as comfortable as one may wish, but if you are into biz and have money for it; its far better than living in your doomed country.

Less you forget, 80% of the goods used in Nigeria are imported from China.

Here are a few reasons for stating that Nigeria is doomed. I posted them sometime ago:

Shameless is when a government official has call girls or "Kristen" in all the government lodges and 5 star hotels around the country.

Shameless is when a president have sex with his daughter in-law and awards her with contracts worth billions of naira.

Shameless is when a president have almost slept with all his female workers.

Shameless is when a president dies while frolicking with 2 indian prostitutes.

Shameless is when a governor disguises as a woman to jump bail.

Shameless is when an ex governor is being worshipped by his people after he was convicted of looting their money.

Shameless is when a governor or govt official is being allowed to run for office when he has a criminal and financial case to answer in court.

Shameless is when an illiterate like Adedibu holds millions of people in Oyo hostage including the governor.

Shameless is when Adedibu comes to a national television to say that Ladoja must be impeached for not giving him 40% of the governor's security vote.

Shameless is when Chimaroke built a cor vet and advertised it on CNN as a tunnel.

Shameless is when Chime who led the hit squad of Chimaroke which claimed many innocent lives, and after being selected as governor, quickly claims to be a "born again"

Shameless is when Sam Egwu has to build less than 30 unit houses for 8 years and couldn't complete it.

Shameless is when Ibori stays in prison and partly decides what happens in Aso rock.

Shameless is when Appeal court has to reinstate Andy Uba as governor starting from 2009, even when the supreme court has ruled that there was no election in Anambra.

Shameless is when Orji Kalu thought he was speaking for the Igbos when he was actually reaping Abia off.

Shameless is when Achike Udenwa said openly told the media that one of his achievements is that he has been able to attract "mr Biggs" to Imo state.

Shameless is when Ohakim's security details have to trash the hell out of a woman in front of her kids for not jumping into 3rd mainland bridge when she heard his siren blaring.

Shameless is when Tinubu shouts on OBJ, when they are birds of the same feather.

Shameless is when a sitting senate president did not win the election into senate in the first place.

Shameless is when the people's favorite young Alhaji happens have a questionable source of wealth.

Shameless is when Ette refuses to resign after being found wanting.

Shameless is when Yerima of zamfara who was alleged to be the most corrupt of the past governors still go about making laws and speaking freely on the floor of the senate.

Shameless is when the likes of Akume, Turaki, Anenih, George etc still go about their bizs without fear or unfavour.

Shameless is when a governor refuses to rehabilitate or reconstruct roads leading directly to his office and house.

Shameless is when the govt has to wait for Niger Delta to threaten it's oil production and facilities before she has to look into their problem.

Shameless is when Ali modu sheriff has not been sentenced to death for allowing the massacre of Christians, especially Igbos in Borno.

Shameless is when the likes of IBB has not been probed.

Shameless is when Agencies like EFCC and ICPC are being stylishly crippled.

Shameless is when TY Danjuma stands up and talk against OBJ.

Shameless is when sitting govt officials who apparently live abroad become so lame or wicked by not impacting what they saw in their own country.

Shameless is when Nyako makes his four wives first ladies for different occasions.

Health minister and co. are being charged for a mere 300mil, while the guys who stole billions are still making noise in the streets.

Nigeria is simply doomed because of her conspiracy against the east and south.

The federal character thing? That one na another story.

Now, post your reasons why Nigeria is not doomed instead of giving us more reasons why Nigeria is doomed.

The simple reason is that Nigerians are busy praying their asses out in several prayers houses (shrine, churches and mosques). GOD IS IN CONTROL, GOD WILL JUDGE, ACT OF GOD.

I dont really care much about what nigerian politicians do, what worries me most is the way our people continue to suffer and endure all these so-called politicians. I just dont understand why nigerians cant stand up for their rights.I mean "stand up" big time like the french revolution, I just do not understand

1) Nigerians taken it upon themselves to change things, Groups coming together to start private businesses to see to the running of facilities such as schools and their maintainance

2) Groups coming together to help keep government accountable, This is by conducting independent research into government spending practices and making this information available to the public as well as the international community so that more information is known as to how money is actually spent, by whom and why This information will be in future used to prosecute the right people and change things quicker,

I can go on and on but I believe that the power is in the hands of the people

We might do better if we start investing in infrastructure and research. We need more science funds and encouragement for innovators. Problem in Nigeria is that we get comfortable easily. Once we start to make or "steal" some money, we do not care about anything else. A young mechanical engineering student should have something to look forward to in the mining industry. He should be nurtured to think innovation and have the means of achieving it. It is unfortunate that we have many Nigerians teaching in the best schools all over the world, but once in Nigeria, a White laborer will get more respect than he can with the many Illiterates at the helm of power in Nigeria. It is every Nigerians responsibility to create a paradigm shift, and change this 'self-hate' model that permeates our country.

Nigeria is not doomed, we need the crash to wake up. It is what some of us have been praying for! The starting point is Agriculture, we must be able to feed the nation otherwise other sectors will collapse.

You are not talking nonsense, these are the same questions i've

been asking myself lately

Our Leaders are alwaz looking outward in the name of attracting

foreign investors, ever failing to look inwards in terms of development

of her rich human and material resources

I share your concern bro.

Some experts on the oil industry are of the opinion that Nigerian oil reserves will only last about four decades – five tops. I will look for the source of the info and post it soon.Where do we go from there?
