Although the continent is home to about 15.2 percent of the world's population, Sub-Saharan Africa alone accounted for an estimated 69 percent of all people living with HIV and 70 percent of all AIDS deaths.

1. Thabang Sefatsa

Former footballer, Thabang Sefatsa made headlines when he confessed to being HIV positive, and he revealed the reason why more players don’t speak out.

2. Bernard Kabanda

Bernard Kabanda was born in 1959 and died in 1999. He was Ugandan guitarist.

3. Musa ‘Queen’ Njoko

Gospel artist Musa ‘Queen’ Njoko publicly disclosed her HIV-positive status in 1995. She was 22 when she was diagnosed, at a time when treatment was not available in South Africa. She faced a lot of stigma and hostility but also found support.

Fela Kuti was Nigerian musician and political activist. He was 59 when he died.

5. Lesego Motsepe

Lesego Motsepe played Lettie Matabane in Isidingo for  10 years. She disclosed her status on World AIDS Day in 2011. Sadly Motsepe stopped using life-saving ARVs in 2012.

She died in 2014.

6. Criselda Kananda

Criselda Kananda was diagnosed HIV positive more than 13 years ago. She was seven months pregnant at that moment. Today she is a mother of 3, motivational speaker, professional counselor, former nurse, medical underwriter and serves on the board of the South African National AIDS Council.

Umanji was a very famous South African musician and songwriter. He died in 2008 when he was 40 years old,

 Bala speaks openly about his diagnose. He got to know that he is HIV positive in 2010 and promised to himself to help others in the same situation.

9. Zombo

South African kwaito star, Zombo, real name, Tebogo Ndlovu, died just months after telling fans he was skint and battling HIV. He was 29.

Kiki Djan died in 2004 at the age of 47. He was Ghanaian singer and member of the musical band Osibisa.
