Babatunde Omidina (Baba Suwe)

Babatunde Omidina (Baba Suwe)

In October 2011, a well-known and successful comedian, Babatunde Omidina, better known as Baba Suwe, was arrested on suspicion of illegal drug use. The drugs were allegedly found in the stomach of the actor when he passed through the scanning machine at the airport. The actor was detained for three weeks, but NDLEA had to let him go because there was no evidence of a crime, as a result. Many celebrities and fans supported Baba Suwe well. After the rejection NDLEA of all charges, many rumors were surrounding the case.

Interestingly, an Ikeja High Court ordered the agency to pay the sum of N25 million as damages for unlawfully detaining him and also tender a public apology to him. None of this ever happened and in 2013, a Court of Appeal sitting in Igbosere, Lagos, quashed the judgment of the high court, saying there was no evidence to attract such. Later these charges were described as false and defamatory by the ruling of the Lagos high court of law. His solicitor was the late Bamidele Aturu, a Nigerian lawyer, and human right activist.

According to news sources, in a new development, Producer, and Director, Yomi Fabiyi, is alleging that a 'long pipe' was inserted through the actor's anus while in detention back in 2011 and the torture done on him by NDLEA is damaging his health at an alarming rate.

You can read what he wrote on this subject:

"On BABA SUWE: I am calling on all SENIOR COLLEAGUES in the entertainment world especially those close to Baba Suwe cos I don't have everyone's contact to please reachout to him asap. The torture done on him by NDLEA is vastly damaging his health at an alarming rate. He told me he no longer feel comfortable since that episode. Baba Suwe is a widower, he can hardly walk properly as I speak, let alone go to film. How will he feed and take care of the children aunty Moladun left behind?"

Babatunde Omidina (Baba Suwe)

"This is an A-List Entertainer and this conspiracy of silence gives me MENTAL AGONY on my part, I don't want to speak when it may be too late, I won't forgive myself. He told me when I visited him that he is innocent of the accusations and yet a LONG PIPE was inserted through his anus, he was detained for too long amongst other things just because he was randomly suspected like every normal person. In my opinion, only lazy, ill-trained, unfit and uncivilised officers torture in the name of investigation. Torture is criminal and sinful. If this accusation is found to be true by independent investigators, it shouldn't go unpunished."

Babatunde Omidina (Baba Suwe)

"The court asked NDLEA to pay him 25million for damages which is yet to be obeyed but to me an OPEN APOLOGY will placate him and illustrate some dignified and civil approach from a government agency that made him go through all that without coming up with a single proof after that prolonged detention and drama. He who assert MUST prove! NDLEA needs to restore public confidence by doing the needful on this matter. And until individuals and government agency begin to respect fundamental HUMAN RIGHT and enhance duty of care, the essence of Nigeria's FREEDOM is far from been realistic. No malice is intended against NDLEA with this outcry, I just hope the leadership see this as a clarion call for getting it right and save the agency from sending an innocent person to an early grave whereby leaving his children to suffer unjustly. My humble take. Thank you.  #JUSTICEFORBABASUWE #SAVEBABASUWE #SAYNOTOTORTURE"

"I was introduced into the business by a friend, God is merciful to me. Do you know before I was introduced to it then, I used to say people selling it should be killed. But when I was arrested, I began to pray to God to bring me out of the problem. Then, acting was no longer lucrative, she told me to do it and the money she told me I will collect was huge, not thinking of the consequences. I decided to give it a try. I know God loves me, if I had been successful, maybe I will still be doing it. I haven’t even left the airport before I was caught and arrested. This is how it happened, when I got to the cocaine dealer, I swallowed the pills with Okro. He was happy I swallowed plenty. My heart was so strong. When I got to the Airport, they told me I had cocaine in me."

She recalls the life story with some concern even now. She remembers every detail from the moment she walked into the territory at the airport.

"It was on September 19, 2006. I was billed to travel to the United Kingdom. So I got to the airport early enough to catch my plane. But then, I was arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency at the Murtala International Airport in Lagos. I was arrested on drug related offences. Initially, I thought I was in a dream, but it later turned out to be a reality. After the scan, it was ordered that they should handcuff me. It was then I knew I was in deep shit. I couldn’t pray for 2 days. It was when they took me to my house I began to feel remorse. All my kids fainted on seeing me. They took my car. The second day, newspaper carried the news, so people were reading it and looking at me. The first statement that came out of my mouth was “God vindicate me”.

The public and many influential people in the Nollywood asked the court to give the opportunity to pay the big fine for her release. While she was in custody, she sincerely repented. Soon she began to have dreams thanks to which she knew she would be vindicated:

“I got to know that in my dream. I had it 3 times before the judgment day. On that day, the court room was filled to the brim. I was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment or a fine of #1million. People didn’t know those who paid. They contributed it at the courtroom. The friend who pushed me into it didn’t show up even till this moment. I didn’t hear from her. All her mobile numbers are no longer available", she said.

"It was a sad experience for me to remember because that event almost cost me my life. Really, I lost so many things to that incident. And it did a lot of damage to my image as an actress and even among my colleagues in the industry. It’s my only regret in life that I had to get involved in drugs. But I thank God that I came out of the mess after serving a two-year jail term. I also thank God that though the situation I found myself was that bad, the news of my drug offence wasn’t that of my obituary. Truly, I have learnt my lessons the hard way. "

Speaking on the scandal, she said "it was a shocking and sad experience, but despite that I still held on to my God and he didn't disappoint me. He only used the incident as a lesson for me."

Taiwo Hassan (Ogogo)

Another equally well-known and talented Yoruba actor, who was involved in a scandal with drugs is Taiwo Hassan, better known as Ogogo. Although the actor was not caught red-handed, he had very similar symptoms, such diseases have drug addicts.

He abruptly lost his weight. But soon he was fully recovered and restored back the weight he had missed a lot of months ago after battling with a strange disease that almost caused him to die. It is important that he actually believes in God, and all the time he thanks him for all.

"May such sickness not come near us again...Let me put it as all things come from Allah. At times, you may be thinking that you are doing the wrong thing and God might say you are right and verse versa. Everybody has his or her trying period, only that you won’t know when God will try you. But according to my own faith, both good and bad cometh from God while the terrestrial powers are also there to carry out their wicked acts, if you say there is no terrestrial power, you are deceiving yourself. All you have to do is be prayerful. Throughout my illness, I did not think negatively, all my thoughts concerning the outcome of the sickness were positive. I was not the only sick person in the world at that time but I guess it became celebrated due to the nature of my job."

Taiwo Hassan (Ogogo)

"During this period, I received series of calls, there was a time a call came through and the man at the other end asked if I was Ogogo and I said yes and the man shouted that this Ogogo speaking will not die and he started praying for me. That person called all the way from Ado-Ekiti. Even in Lagos, the noise was everywhere that I was dead but I give God all the glory that all the noise and cries were not over my corpse but they were voices raised to God for my survival.
A lot of people have often asked why do women love Ogogo and I always tell them that it depends on the perspective from which they are looking at it, because as far as I am concerned, I am loved by both sexes through what I am doing. Whether I am good or bad at home nobody cares to know, it is what I do on screen that matters."

Taiwo Hassan (Ogogo)

Although the actor after his recovery in an interview stated that he had never seen cocaine in his life, and ultimately denies these rumors:

"I never gave it a thought because I had known that as a celebrity, lots of reasons would be adduced as to the cause of my illness. Despite all lies fabricated against Jesus Christ, and even Prophet Mohammed, God vindicated them, so who am I that people won’t talk about, let them talk. I have never seen cocaine before in my life, to God who made me. Or is it a crime for one to travel abroad? "

Taiwo Hassan (Ogogo)

We know that most of the artists are used as a carrier for the drug lords, like Taiwo Akinwande’s story. In an interview, Taiwo Hassan spoke about this topic:

"Our fans always stand by us, they appreciate us a lot. I was amazed when we got to Dele Momodu’s house and the children greeted us traditionally. Funny enough, he speaks Yoruba to them at home. He was the first person that launched our movies with big cash. I don’t want to mention figures here but at the end of the day, the four of us that went to the UK came home with nothing less than 5,000 pounds, so imagine coming to Nigeria with such money and bags, they will immediately conclude we are into drugs."
