Why Do Many Nigerian Guys In America Try So Hard To Be Gangsters?

So many nigerian guys here try so hard to be something they are not. Especially when they try to become blood or crip, knowing damn well they wouldn't do that in nigeria. i feel a guy can show his toughness in other was rather than joining a gang. its not cute. some ladies may like tough guys, but it wouldnt be cute when their bad-Bottom byfriend gets shot or stabbed

So they dont get messed with simple as that sometimes you just have to put niggas in their place and sometimes acting like you can fight can really save you a lot of confrontation

Many Nigerian boys try to be 'gangstas' whether in America or not. Even in Naija we formed gangs and did some gangish poo. Yankee has nothing to do with it. It is just childish runs.

they don't want to seem/look FOB (fresh off the boat)

fitting in with mainstream african americans

yeah i'll agree with gnature. peer pressure affects teens and youth more significantly.

Well personally I think. That the "Gangster" Stereotype is one that influences people all around the world, it's not so much about wanting to become Black American or like a Black American but more so in trying to adopt something refreshingly Hip. Jazz was basically created by AAs, but there are Americans(White) in America that practically live Jazz.

Wearing a Top hat and listening to Classical Music in an attempt to culture yourself

Is no different from listening to Rap, whilst wearing a hood.

It's not about trying to be something you're no but rather about been influenced by something you cherish.

There is no culture on earth that hasn't being influenced by other peoples or cultures.

Its just a generational thing. Nigerian guys between 16 and [early to mid twenties] can be found trying to be gangsters. Its more of the youth in them driving this than anything.

0
Avatar

Quite common, among Naija men. They want to be like gangstas, speak ebonics, wear hoods, listen to rap and just copy the lifestyles of some African American men. It boils down to inferiority complex, and the chance to 'fit in' with the AA group.

Certainly not a race issue here.

These kids aren't 'gangsta'. They are kids who are very impressionable. It is up to their parents to instill them with proper beliefs and morals. The kids will ultimately have to make their own decision wheather or not to follow it. For now, let them have fun.

I think that Nigerians who try to act like these akata gangsters really shouldn't. First of all, we don't have the same history as them, so we really have no excuse to act like an ignorant, incompetent, immature criminal. After all your relatives have suffered to bring either you, your parents, or other relatives here to America, you'd rather throw all of that away to act like a menace to society. We should be acting like other immigrants who come to this country, succeed in education, and establish ourselves enough to contribute something back home. YOU ARE NOT AKATA, so drop it.

Btw, I'm NBA (Nigerian born in America) in medical school.

Nigerian guys in America trying so hard to be gangsta = abeg, leave them alone, they are just wannabees,

worse, the ones here in Nigeria. You see, with the level of sunshine and heat here, imagine someone, around 2pm wearing this an oversized t-shirt, low-waste level baggy jeans which he has to hold with his hands at the front, timbaland boots, and then a half zipped-up heavy jacket(like the one worn during snow season, a headband, and a dog-chain on his neck.

they may be around two guys dressed that way, and walking as if their hips were dislocated. they might be talking together and then they are gyrating as if their hands want to break into two. worse, suppose they had their own car, we would have said, o boy, this guys are hot o, but they poor boys are still taking okada.

I just smile and wonder how the devil could be punishing some people. Their role models are hiphop starts and the european and american ganstas, and those kind of clothing are not fit for this our kind of weather, but my bobos here will still wear it regardless of the personal discomfort, as long as they wannabe

Actually nigerian govt made us that way. There is so much insecurity in ngr thats why u see guys identifying wit cult groups.A broda tld me he will join one so he cld get a clique, nobody wants to be intimidated, the govt is already made of gangs when you are made to go tru fetish acts b4 u can take up a post in ngr.Wats more worse than that. Are our leaders not suppose to set good examples.

0
Avatar

I disagree on that one! Even the ones in Nigeria are worse, they wanna be among. they want to emulate what they see in the videos so they wanna be something as like that, they are even more annoying than the ones abroad!!

They r just tryin 2 fit in. if they were in Nigeria, they wont act like dat. But nt all of them. As we are all different.

Really from exsperience ladyj is right because where i used 2 go 2 school i knew many naija boys like dat and da american boys used 2 like them 2 b that way but me a naija girl knowing some of them before even arriving in the US think that they should be themselves but at times i understand peer pressure.

0

Some of these naija boys don't try to be gangsters but their situation makes them gangsters. when someone is homeless what is the next step??/

@Joftech

Cult Boys in our tertiary institutions carry guns, maybe not UZIS and AK'S. But that is just an economic thing. If they can afford those weapons i am sure they will carry it freely. They might not sell crack, but they are doing a lot of illegal things and getting away Scott free.

0

But they don't sell cracks, neither do they go about with Uzis and AK.

@Topic

It is not EZ to live the THUG LIFE. I am all for them to do their thing, just do not kill people. Nigerian Boyz in Nigeria try very hard to be Gangsters too, even more than those here in the US. Nigerian rappers and artist all try to copy the US trends. You Nigerians in country, need to remove log in your eyes before judging the 1% here.

well is not every Nigerian Guy in America that try so hard to be a gangster, some of them still have the good attitude they had when they were in nigeria, while some the wannabes are totally out of control.

If you read my post, "acquittal" means the case is ended and Irv and his brother are home free. Last I checked, it's the INC RECORDS. Please update me on that. Thanks. By the way, you sound really young and might want take my advice and get the big picture about gangsters. I'll love to see you become the next Irv Gotti or better still Jay Z. Rap mogul that is. Peace.

I do things that will make all people happy, not to rob Peter to pay Paul.

If it's true that you work for IG's company you wouldn't be saying all these poo right here, unless you want him to be heading back to the court room. Those stuffs are incrmininating.

But if it's true, it's means you are been used. I pray you don't end up like Mr. Williams

Menike, you just wait till I call mommy and tell her how big and bad you've been acting on line your Bottom is in trouble boy, and many times did daddy tell you not to use that kind of language in public. Your little behind is getting it when daddy gets home from work.

Menike,

Are you referring to the INC records?. do they have a new office yet after the acquittal? Please don't get carried away by gangster rap. It's just a marketing ploy. Real gangsters in the hood do stuff that rappers talk about and often end up in correction facilities.

0

Menike, u's a trip.

Gangsta's don't tell people they are gangstas. You see it in em. If you go about saying you's a gangsta.. hunnie.. im sorry to burst your bubbles, but you are nothing than a wannabe gangsta.

Certified gangstas dont brag abt being gangstas... they r Just IT!

Lets try to keep this in perspective. Nija kids that try to join gangs in the US don't do so because they're Nigerians trying to be "Akata". They just want to belong. It takes strong will to avoid societal pressures, especially for teens. It's the same pressures that push guys in Nigeria join university gangs like Eye, , Vikings, BB, Mafia etc.

"Ms Disney", stereotyping is exactly what you're doing attributing the character of your "one-time-fling" Igbo boyfriend to every Igbo guy. It's quite unfortunate you couldn't come up with a better idea of why nija guys in the US try to be gangsters, but you ended up sounding like a jealous scorned woman. If you have beef with this guy or Igbo guys in general, just avoid them. But I don't think you can do that. Can you?
