Why Are Africans Losing Their Identity In The West: ?

why are africans losing their id's in the west?, I think the image of africa in the west is so terrible that associating ones self with the continent seems embarrasing(I am proud african, no send them')so this is my suggestion

"

1 Here's a warning to Africans viewers, avoid watching CNN news coverage of Africa, it can be bad for your health. Bad for your health because its portrayal of Africa is more often than not, in a negative light and may leave you mad, angry and frustrated. I know the temptation to watch 'Inside Africa' is especially strong for those in the diaspora, since it is one of the few visual links to the place you call home. But you stand to be disappointed more times than you will be pleased

2. I think its high time we africans create our own cnn,fox news and co so that the world wouldnt have to rely on sucker networks like cnn for news about our beloved continent, africa forever,

Why African loosing their Identity in the west is like a man who used coal, clay and yellow to design his face at night, so in the morning when he comes out people start laughing at him that it's not the way to put make-up, so looking himself in the mirror and looking how others apply their own become a thing to be ashamed of. So he'll try to adjust, adopt other's way to systematize his own.

BE YOU, DO YOU.

Whatever that is.

People lose their identity because they never had one or are ashamed of the one they got.

most africans won't open their mouths - in fear that they maybe found out. Define your culture and hob nob in it.

too bad most think YT is god.

@ Naija-diva, Asians (at least here in the UK) tend to hold on to their culture and its beyond mere speaking the language.

Look at the Indians, Pakistanis, Malaysians,Chinese, Japanese,Sri lankans.

They speak the language (some also write it)

Eat the food

Keep their names, instead of changing it to a (White sounding one)

Observe their festivals en mass, like Eid, Chinese new year etc

Practice their religions

Ever seen an indian wedding?, Culture Galore

Wear their clothes, in my Uni days, the Asian girls would wear their sari's daily

Compared to many Africans, especially west Africans, they keep their culture when they move to a foreign land. Not only that they are not as eager to shack up witht he nearest White woman they can find who will have them, like those who will remain nameless, lol

Do to the unquestionably implanted identity connection in which the African-American has in-rooted into the American presence--- it allows for a platform in which Africans and other non-formal black-Americans born and raised here in the US can much easily blend into the obscure of the American identity much better than alot of other groups, such as non black and white Hispanics and or Asians.

My wife, her sister and many of their cousins were all born and raised their whole lives here in the US, and thus consider themselves to be more so African-Americans than Nigerian-Americans. This is mainly do to having a stronger tie to the African-American cultural identity than that of the Nigerian-- due to the environment they grew up in.

Anytime I'm in America, I always meet 9ja people trying to speak like Americans. It's annoying that we are telling ourselves that whatever we are is not good enough

i know there's a lot of them in boston. i never said there weren't. nigerians are large in amount in any major city of the world. but someplaces have more than other. there might be more nigerians in your big city in comparison to my big city but as a whole, there might me more nigerians in my state than in your state. U understand?

like i said before, going to a nigerian function doesn;'t count. if its a naija party, why wouldn't more than 80% be nigerian. and church doesn't count either cuz nigerians follow the crowd. if a lot of nigerians go to one church, the rest follows. my grandma use to go to this caribbean church because she heard a lot of nigerians are there, then more came. then she went to some ghana church because she heard nigerians are there, and then more came. now she's at other church, i think american, and most of the people that were in the ghana and caribbean church followed each other to the same church only to be together.

@naija_diva, Lol, how else would i see them if not through such gatherings. I know more than a couple at school

but know that my school is divided into 3 schools but all in one buildin' but where am at, I

know like 4 of 'em. most of the ones i don't know who i see at parties probably live outside of

Boston, like Cambridge, etc but come to Boston for parties, meetings, etc. more than 80% of my

church are Nigerians.

@tpia, once again, u're misconstruin' my post. I only posted a response, why're

you havin' seizures/heart attacks for?? and then askin' me how my post affects

me. From the way i see it, u're the one gettin' worked up Cuz i didn't attach

all those meanings to my post but u keep pickin' out parts.

i didn't say there wasn't a lot of nigerians there, i said in comparison to where i live there's more. just like there's more of them in New York and in Houston, TX. I'm not saying if you go to like Cali, or Alabama they will be few or might not be there. They might even be a lot in that location. If you have to go to naija party just to see that there really is a lot of Nigerians living there, then to me, i don't considered that being a lot.

That's not true. Who told u there're not much Nigerians here?? There are tons of them, trust me. I may

not know them but i do see a lot of 'em when i attend naija parties and am wonderin' 'so all these

Nigerians live in boston??" By the way, that has nothin' to do with knowin' ur roots/culture. One shld be proud

of their culture whether they're in the midst of their people or strangers.

exactly!!

if you are embacing your roots because you have to or your parents force you, then i don't call it "embracing". its just you doing what your parents tell you to do.

true, the chinese cook according to their location. my friend told me that in the caribbean, their chinese food is different from ours. they can go to the chinese carryout and get curry chicken but up here, you probably can't get that. same thing with mcdonalds. not everyone's mcdonald sells the same thing. when i went to north carolina, the had pork BBQ sandwich, which i've never seen at my local mcdonald.

that's true but it goes the same way for other people as well.

but i guess it also has to do with your location and the people around you cuz here in Maryland, we have a big nigerian population in comparison to where you are in bouston. if you are in a place where there is not that much cultural diveristy, you are gonna tend to blend in with the rest but if your in a place where people are proud of who they are and where they come form, then it makes you want to be proud of where you come from too.

Tpia, if Africans abroad are adapting their culture according to their surroundings, which is the culture of a fereign land, then they are losing it, at least the authenticity of it. They are effectively diluting it. With all the English men and women who came to Nigeria to live and work either as missionaries or under the British Empire, they ALWAYS took their culture with them, they didn't dilute it with our own culture, even though it was Nigerian culture in all its forms which was the dominant one. They rather imposed theirs on us. Africans are not the only ones aboad, how come the Chinese do not adapt their culture with the American or English one, what about the Asian communties abroad, do they adapt their own culture to fit that of the UK, America or Europe, no, I think you'll find they don't, yet they are as much a part of their resident countries as Africans.

Why is the African person the only ones to do this?

My theory, is that it stems from how many of us esteem other cultures as superior to our own. If the truth be told many are ashamed of our cultural heritage.

What chinese/asians are you talking about? Just because they still speak chinese doesn't mean they are perserving it. A lot of them forget that they are asians as soon as they step foot out of Asia.

Like any culture, it survives because it has to be kept aliove by the people who claim to belong to it. The Chinese/Indians etc are in the west just like we are, they preserve their culture, they esteem it and continually make sure it remains relevant to them, their communities and families. People are the lifeblood of any identity, if they chose to disguard it (which in my opinion is what has happened in many African communities), they will lose it, simple.

Its actually a choice whether conscious or otherwise.

Lol @topic, it's ironic because i don't even watch CNN or bother to see whatever

they gotta show about Nigerian or Africa in general because i already know all i need to know.

The words i hear spewing from 'their' lips about Africa is enough for me. why bother

watchin' what they gotta say when i already know about where i'm from.
