Why Do Africans Praise The Dead Always?

What the hell is wrong with we Africans? Somebody will steal all your money, Bleep all our wives, kill as many as he can in the name of politics, and when he dies everybody will be singing his praises instead of cursing him. Why this mentality?

Frankly, I admire your power of expression. Nonetheless, I am glad that the other respondents got my drift and gave appropriate responses. Cheers.

A polite request that you simply clarify your position was ignored, and instead you have resorted to wasting your efforts in defending an untenable position (efforts better applied in improving your command of the English language). In my original post, I did give a contribution based on what I felt your original post implied (and not what it meant).

It is bad enough that you wrote something unqualified in all of it's dimensions, worse still is your ambitious effort to defend it. This is what is truly sad.

Well, it is still sad that you failed to understand what all those who responded before you understood with ease. This may be due to being too critical about simple and obvious statements on your side. I will appreciate you read/interprete statements with an open mind to avoid embarassment .

The title of your thread " Why Do Africans Praise The Dead Always", leaves no exception to the rule. You made an unqualified reference to all Africans, and to all occurrences in time.

Your original post makes reference to 'we Africans', meaning your are speaking on behalf of, if not all, at least the majority of Africans. To compound your generalization you make  a second reference to 'everybody'.

There is nothing to be gained from reading between the lines, when one, such as yourself, expresses themselves so unequivocally.

Wow! From your statements which I have highlighted, it is obvious that you do not understand me ab initio. For instance, how can ALL africans attend funeral for an individual at the same time in the same place as claimed by you? Again, how can one man commit the offences in all places in Africa? Also, how can every african know the man and praise him according to you?

My thread is very clear. Maybe, you should have read various responses by members before coming up with your sweeping statements which originated from your failure to read in between the lines.

So this person that died,

- All africans attended his funeral?

- He alone represents everyone that has stolen money, slept with the wives of others, and killed as many as they can in the name of politics,?

- Every African has been singing his praises?

Your earlier posts assumes that the answer to the above questions are in the affirmative when it obviously not so.

Even then you didn't even provide any reference/evidence (written or otherwise) to backup your single instance of occurrence.

Did you ever consider that only the people that thought favorably of the deceased attended the funeral, and others that didn't like him didn't attend? or do expect his wife, kids and relatives to all speak ill of him?

You are free to express your grievance about any thing, but please do not go about posting sweeping statements about others without providing any evidence to backup your claims

What evidence do you want me to supply than the official verbal words and written comments on the register at the home of the deceased? The few dissenting voices are never heard officially but as closed door grumblings or mumblings.

Your initial post is just a sweeping statement with no context or evidence to substantiate it.

Please read my introduction on this thread. I think it is clear enough.

@poster

Could you please be more specific or provide an example.

In my neck of the woods (or rather rain forest), culturally, it is wrong to speak ill of the dead. This is far from your accusation of praising the dead irrespective of their virtues or vices when alive.

Praising of a departed soul is an individual choice. Sad as it may seem, no matter how evil a person may seem in the eyes of most, a few will still see them for a saint.

As far as I am concerned the evil that men do should live after them. I am not talkng about someone who talked about your mama or somethng like that. People who have murdered innocent people, destroyed lives because of greed, caused other people pain and misery out of selfishness etc. They simply do not deserve to rest in peace and people should be allowed to say that at their funerals. The Hitler's of our time, the Ted Bundy's all of them. You will even be a liar to say they will rest in peace.

traditionally africand dont subscribe to it

religiously whcih is universal, the bible quran that i know of frown on it firstly as a mere mortal who doesnt have the power to create let alone criticise judge a mortal as him/herself.

morally,it doesnt make any sense judging an individual who is dead and cant defend him/herself, its like threatening an individual in a remote village threatening george bush who he has no chance of meeting

Havent you heard of the saying, "Dont speak ill of the dead?" The underlying reason is that the dead cant defend themselves. Not that, I am innocent of speaking against them though.

The dead can't defend themselves, so it is furtile to accuse or talk bad about them.

It's not just an African thing. Even the Italians respect the dead in spite of what they may had been while alive.

It's just a matter of respect. Perhaps in Africa there are also superstitions. Who knows?!

It is just UnAfrican to talk about the dead in bad way. Rather keep quiet about his bad side.

Reason: I don't know. It's just African culture.
