this is becoming terrible, anywhere i go now i see typical 9ja girls forming phony accents as if its not enough when they fake it with guys even when talking to fellow girls they still squeeze their noses to talk and it is soooo disgusting i met one of 'em today she is obviously a tile-tile but you go fear phony British accent to think she is not a fluent person 'twas so annoying i felt like slapping fake out of her fake mouth, d'you know someone said something about shepe(local gin) and she was like "huh whats that?"never heard of it in my life for God sakes she is an omo eko gan gan and she has never heard of shepe in her 20-something yrs on earth how fake!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well,i've spent over 5 years, living in thiruvanmiyur, new delhi and i'd say the girls i see here don't dare to form accents up,cuz an average indian accent is kinda distinct from all, like calling ''m.m'' ''pyam pyam'',though, there are some very good speakers among 'em,and i've actually come acrosss some nigerian ladies @ a function who were trying to wrap my head in with some FAKE Singaporean accent, but i wasn't fazed and flowed freely with the tongue i was brought up with,@ a point, they had to quit the discussion cuz i started introducing some lines from my pidgin lexis. 'twas so bleeping hilarious.

@Wrex, but why must it be the Nigerian that has to be fake? You spoke with people who have strong accent themselves, yet it was only you who felt you had to form your accent, sad.

tile tile - typical naija babe. I don learn something today.

Anyway most people forms, but I can understand where the poster is coming from. Some people could be really annoying and not just girls, boys as well.

I was watching a naija program on illegal naija immigrants in europe and there was this guy in Italy that was forming phonne (not sure how to spell this) while being interviewed. Italy is the only country he has been to since leaving naija and he forms accent. So I ask my people around me if english is that widely spoken in Italy, so how come the accent thing. But you will soon ask me how the guy want tell people say im dey europe.

Anyway I declare slaps for anyone that forms. So ppl if your neighbour or anyone you meet is forming, just throw am some slaps.

This accent thing can cause wahala sometimes o. i remembered one scene in a so called boutique in Benin on 29th Dec. The lady came in greeted, walked around and priced one top. The guy selling (my friend) called a price and the lady was like for 'wetin now' and continued in pigin that is it because of xmas or what and stated the normal price range. My friend then apologized that he thought she's one of the 'being tos' that came home for xmas and wanted to have his own share of the dollars,

Sometimes you change/fake accent to fit in a conversation but when you do it to impress is when it brings 'wahala'

if you must speak with an accent, make sure it tallies with where you live, learn the rudiments ,the slangs, practice in front of a mirror for a bit, freestyle around close friends and family that wont run you down but rather correct you.after building some confidence, enjoy.

They do it just to up their cool, boys n men also are guilty. It something "Hey what rockin' instead of Guy how far?. This food stinks/stench's instead of O'boy dis food no mk sense.

Pple tend to stop n stare when ur accent is foreign. Who gives a damn even if it's cocky. Every body wants to be cooler than the guy or girl next door.

FLuency in English language should not be confused with speaking with an accent. If you did not speak English during your formative years, it would be very difficult to speak English fluently, even if you are trying to speak with another accent. So what the girls do is to watch Yankee movies and relentlessly practice speaking with, say, an American accent; but if you were not generally speak English fluently, trying to speak with an American accent underneath a village accent is not pleasant to the ear, and it will make you look like a buffoon.

The prevalence of DSTV is partly responsible for the loci girls who want to speak with an accent, esp American accent.

A friend of mine went for an interview recently in Lagos - he'd lived and worked in Colorado for 12yrs so of course some of a pronounciations and spellings were a little bit different from the british english we grew up with in Nigeria.

During the interview, someone on the panel kept picking on him for the way he was talking and some spellings on his resume - some words were missing the letter 'u' and the date format was obviously different. Although he got the offer, this friend was frustrated during the interview process. Imagine now having to work with that panel person.  This samething happens globally, not only in Nigeria.

I guess that's why I'm kind of pissed at such people who tend to frustrate those who want to return home. - if you have lived outside of ur native land for several years, somethings are bound to change, regardless of where that is.

I agree some people form but I just had to put it out there that it's not everyone Some d it out of necessity. When I am at work, I talk / write in such a way that my colleagues can understand but when I'm with my own people. leave story.  I dont even speak english in my house anyway - cos that is the only way I can get my child to speak my native language.

peace to all.

This thing is very true, maybe they are trying to sound posh, most do it so u would think they travel a lot - put men on cruise when in reality they have not even travelled to Ghana, others do it cause Maybe just Maybe they will sound better educated, most cause they are watching tooooooooo many naija movies,

in my old office all the babes would be speaking Fonetics up and down the place, my colleauges would be like Atilla are you sure you schooled abroad, talkless of even leaving this country.

nawa for naija women, they are a special specie

I was responding to a specific post about how people judge you by your accent or how it reflects on how educated you are.

Lol, we are not talking about people on the job, we are talking about people just faking an accent because they feel it superior to their own. We are also not talking about people who have an accent which is naturally aquired. You have no business talking in an American accent when the closest you have been to the States is Maryland in LAGOS.

A person may speak pidgin with his friends, but on the job speak the standard English which he was taught/knows, that is different, that is just about appropriateness and some people have more than one accent. The cockney accent will change simply when the person decides to pronounce words correctly and slowly.

I just cant take people seriously who fake the funk out of nowhere. I would never give a man the time of day if he does that. I remember one Nigerian boy trying to talk in a Jamaican accent, I just told him he sounds silly, besides they dont even talk like that, ITS A TURN OFF, he didn't know I was of Nigerian parentage/background. So I guess it was supposed to impress me, lol

I like Africans who are proud of who they are, not fake people who are ashamed to show the world what is theirs.

If you are in the business of talking and you work with foreigners who speak with an accent different from yours, it is either you are able to communicate efficiently with people or you get fired. In the process of trying to do this, your pronounciations will definately begin to change after a while, regardless of how old you are (although it might be tougher for older folks).  Now imagine being in this kinda job for several years, yes, you may start talking with an accent that might be not as perfect as the indigenes'.   So then when you return to ur native country after sevral years, people tend to think you are posing and that is why most people choose to speak yoruba / igbo so as not to hear some of the rubbish being rolled out here.

But if you are in a foreign land and ur job has little or no interaction with other people, then ur dictations might not change.

Now the people who lived in naija all their lives watch movies and of course wannt to talk like their favorites actors in the western world. And when we think about it, dont we all in one way or another ??

Whether you choose to accept it or not, we all tend to present ourselves in a positive way - a way the listener will be able to easily understand and appreciate.

I dont hear you complain about Paul Adefarasin - he talks that way to expand his crowd.

Haters.
