NRC, Nigerian Railway Corporation and its Acting Managing Director, Mr Fidet Ikhiria claimed that the train service of Abuja-Kaduna got more than N5 million income for the first two weeks of working.

Ikhiria told it to the NAN, News Agency of Nigeria while travelling on Saturday on the train Abuja-Kaduna railway. Mr Bayo Onanuga, the NAN Managing Director, and Mr Ado Lawal the NAN Editor-in-Chief, were also there, on board.

News Agency of Nigeria reiterates that President Muhammadu Buhari had recently discovered 1.46 billion train Abuja-Kaduna and it was opened on July 26 by Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. Ikhiria told that he had no record of any daily life income.

There was official information that in the very first week of working, they made N2.2 million; during the second week they earned about N2.9 million. Now it is the third week of its working; the latest week report has already showed that they had about 5,000 passengers during just six days.

They have capacity to make a trip for 320 passengers; nowadays it’s the maximum they can carry for one trip. So, according to this, for a day, the maximum amount of passengers they can carry is 1000.

Ikhiria said rail track would work until the end of August. Also he acknowledged that there were some difficult operational failures on the route, and said that the management is urgently working toward solving them. He said that some of the staff did not even get used to the numbering of seats, how it differs from what was available in other previous trains.

According to the one of the heads, the coaches are overwhelmed by the amount of people carrying on board. They told that some passengers having the economy class tickets are trying to sit on the first class because often the economy class is totally filled. He mentioned that he was going to do much more enlightenment on it at the level of the station and the community.

According to the speed of this train line, he said that the speed setting was not the coach, but the track which, according to him, has been developed in accordance with the specification. According to him, the train started at 90 kilometers per hour from the original 70 kilometers per hour, but could reach up to 150 kilometers per hour in the prescribed manner.

‘Very slow speed of the train to avoid accidents as people living close to the rails has to get used to the movement of trains’, he explained. Okhiria also said that efforts are under heightened security at stations and on board trains.

‘Our scanners will already be in place till the next week. It was also discussed with NSCDC, Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps to deploy much more men. We have already armed a lot of policemen on board and also different security personnel without uniform,’ he added.

He said that there were a lot of efforts made to install best internet facilities in the train.

During an interview Mr Bayo Onanuga, the Managing Director of NAN, who was on board the train, he praised the service and said that Nigerians begin to use train services as they previously did in the 60s and 70s. Also Onanuga, who was together with Mr Lawal Ado, the Editor-in-Chief of NAN, however, told that NRC still need to do a lot of work for improving the train services in general.

‘It seems that NRC underestimated the interest of our people boarding the train. They need to buy more trains and also they must increase the capacity and increase the frequency of movement. They must provide the food and other services such as the Internet. It is very good in general that we have made it to Kaduna in just two and a half hours,’ he mentioned.

Mr Kayode Emmanuel, another passenger told NAN that such system of boarding the train was very chaotic and totally disorganized. He added that the manager should certainly know the amount of passengers each coach can contain and sell tickets only in according to it in order to avoid the crowded coaches. Isa Yusuf, on his part (he was also on board), told that previously he expected that all passengers of the first-class coach would get some light refreshment.

Abuja-Kaduna railway project has made a lot of noise in media. But whether this idea becomes successful and truly needed in Nigeria we will see in the nearest future.
