Niger River is not only the largest in Nigeria, but it is one of the 10 largest rivers of Africa. It stretches for over 4 000 km on West African plains. The source of the river starts in the heights of Guinea. By its length it is the third longest river on African continent.

The route of Niger River is one of the most unusual in the world (for large rivers). The river starts close to the Atlantic Ocean shore (240 km away from it). Then it goes inland and turns again (like a boomerang) and returns to the ocean shore. Scientists believe such an odd turn occurs, because the river is formed by two ancient ones merged together.
