5.    Teach them to communicate in a right way

Make sure that your kids are aware of responsible communication. It means that they should think about their actions in the network. Actually, it concerns to what they write. Teach them that if they wouldn’t tell something to someone’s face, they shouldn’t write it as a message or comment.

Many modern websites have special tools to flag inappropriate content. Teach your children how to flag this content.  For example, on YouTube, you should click on the “Flag” link directly below the video. Also, you can choose the option of Safety Mode on YouTube and videos which have some age restriction will not show up. However, all filters are not perfect. Therefore, we also advise you to community flagging and porn-image detection to help you hide inappropriate content.

 Many popular websites which children usually use have sharing controls, with the help of which it is possible to choose who can see personal blogs, videos, profiles, and photos. Such websites include Blogger, YouTube, and social networks. Teach the children how to use these controls especially when it comes to sharing their personal info such as address, phone numbers, etc. Also teach them to respect the privacy of friends.

9.    Make sure that you kids are aware of security issues

Teach your kids that they shouldn’t trust everything they see on the Internet and everybody they “meet” online. People very often claim to be somebody they are not in the reality. Therefore, make sure your children don’t share information online with unknown people and don’t arrange face to face meetings with them.

10.    Use Google filters

Google has many tools and special filters, which will help you to choose what content your children can see online. Google works in close collaboration with different organizations who are responsible for protecting young people on Internet and aimed to provide all users with safe experience. There are also controls that help parents to manage their kids’ online experience. For example, you can use Google Safe Search, which is designed to detect sites which have sexually explicit materials and remove them from search results. To do that, just click on Search Settings at the top right of the Google homepage and use password-protected Safe Search Lock.
