How to marry a Hausa lady?

Hausa wedding

Hausa is one of the major population of the Northern Nigeria. The dominant religion of Hausa is Islam but some of them are Christians. According to statistics, Nigerian population at least on one-third consists of Hausa. Hausa language and population are not monolithic. The traditional marriage of Hausa is mostly based on Muslims traditions. The traditional ceremony is less expensive compare to Igbo and Yoruba. If a man seeks a hand of Hausa lady, the first step for him is the house of future family-in-law. The family of the future wife will not give their treasure easily. The man is to go through close inspection first, where his morals, religious believes, ethics, finance and other things related to marriage. He may receive a permission of seeing the lady after close inspection of the parents but no courtship welcomed before marriage. When the girl and her family accept a marriage proposal, here starts the fun!

Phase 1

Hausa wedding

After accepting the marriage proposal, the future husband`s family provides a tribute to the future family-in-law, it also called Kayan Zance. The list of items may consist of:

  • Shoes
  • Underwear
  • Perfumes
  • Fabrics
  • Scarves
  • Furniture
  • Household items … etc.

According to finance basis of the groom, future wife members of the family may ask to provide a house for the future couple, where it`s an obligation of the bride family to furnish it. The main areas to be furnished are the kitchen, living room, bedroom.

Phase 2

Hausa wedding

Daurin Aure. It`s a traditional Hausa religious wedding ceremony. According to this Hausa marriage ceremony, the two groups of representatives from both families share their vows to each other. The only man allowed being presented in this ceremony. They also pray and exchange toast for the wealthy and health of the future family. The main host of the ceremony is a religious leader who seals the vows for the sake of future husband and wife.

Phase 3

Hausa wedding

Kamun Amariya. It`s literally translated as catch the bride. If the man was able to conquer the positive answer from the parents of the bride, it does not mean that the bride`s friends accepted him. According to Hausa wedding and cultural traditions, the groom`s family must negotiate the price for the bride with her friends. It may take some time.

Phase 4

Hausa wedding

Sa lalle or Wuni. The party for ladies only. It`s time when the future wife can spend some time with her friends and female members of the family.Also, on Wuni, ladies prefer to decorate their bodies with a mixture of henna and create wonderful pictures on hands.

Phase 5

Hausa wedding

Kai Amariya . The group of family members escorts the bride to her matrimonial home to be well received by groom`s family. The whole process is to be watched by a priest. It`s not the end of the marriage ceremony. According to the financial basis of the groom, the ceremony continues with festivities and endless party.

Hausa wedding

The date of the wedding is also to be negotiated in the presence of the whole family. Also, some Hausa people prefer modern look in wedding ceremonies and seek their partners with using the internet and social networks. Hausa wedding dresses provide connection to Islam but Christian versions are also accepted amongst young people. According to modern trends, some Hausa members also prefer wedding ceremonies in western style with white dresses. It`s worth mentioning that Hausa representatives also live beyond African borders like in Europe and the USA. Some of them prefer to stick cultural and national traditions in wedding ceremonies. Nevertheless, the marriage in different to the traditional is also accepted amongst youngsters who prefer to add something new to traditions. Supposedly, non-traditional weddings usually welcomed with skepticism from old members of the family. The reaction may be even hostile.
