Despite careful inspection, sniffing and selection of the best products on the market, two days later, you find that the cucumbers are wilted, the tomatoes were dried up, and the peppers were rotten. Do you know such problem well?
The fate of vegetables can be predicted even before their purchase, considering their genetic predisposition, weather, and method of cultivation.
But this sad fate you can change. Even if your refrigerator has multiple temperature modes, you can use a simple secret – the farther the product is from the door of the fridge, the colder is the temperature. Shelves on the fridge door are the warmest place in it, and the rear wall is the coldest.
There a few simple rules that will help you to enjoy vegetables longer:
Temperature: tomatoes do not like cold; the optimum temperature to store them is 12 degrees.
Duration of storage: for barely-ripened tomatoes, this period may be a week. Unripe tomatoes should not be stored in the fridge before they ripen and become entirely red.
Preparation: before placing tomatoes in the refrigerator it is recommended to remove them from the leaves as they dry and moldy in cold. If they left, they can damage the adjacent part of the tomato and begin the decay process.
Storage: to increase the storage time, store the tomatoes in a bag with large holes and attach to the package a paper towel which will absorb excess moisture.
Temperature: cucumbers do not like heat, so they should be stored in the refrigerator. If the cucumbers are out of the fridge, they will fade quickly. They will turn yellow, will change texture and flavor. On the other hand, the cold will make the cucumbers soft and cover them with microscopic scarring. These scars will start the decay process.
Storage duration: if all necessary measures are undertaken, cucumbers can stay relatively fresh from 10 to 14 days
Preparation: before you put the cucumbers in the fridge, you should clear yellow blossoms. As a rule, the decay process begins from them.
Storage: to preserve the freshness of cucumber as longer as possible, each of them should be wrapped up in a paper towel to retain moisture and to absorb its surpluses. Removing the cucumbers into closed but not sealed packs, you will delay the appearance of scars and softening of the vegetables. Cucumbers, which are kept for a long period in the fridge, should be consumed immediately after removing from the refrigerator. In a day or two out cool storage conditions, the quality of cucumbers will rapidly deteriorate.

You should take into account the color of the pepper at the time of collection and packaging. All peppers are originally green; they change color depending on the period of maturity. Duration of storage: hard pepper without damages on the surface can be stored from 7 to 10 days. If red pepper has a green side – it can be stored up to two weeks.

Temperature: green onions are well kept at a temperature of 0 degrees. In a home refrigerator where the temperature is not lower than 5 degrees, the leaves of the onions will continue to grow. Because of this, the leaves may turn yellow and start to deteriorate.
Buying: we recommend buying onions, whose leaves are dark green, no brown parts at the base. This part signals the beginning of the decay process. You should also avoid light shade green since it means a very short storey life.
Preparation: often there is a bit of sand at the base of the bow. We recommend to wash the plate – but not the leaves.
