What can affect male fertility?
Fertility is the ability of the body to create a sexually mature offspring. Simply put, the higher the male fertility is, the greater are the chances of a man to become a father.
As a general rule, the need of male fertility test occurs after several unsuccessful attempts of conception. However, doctors believe that infertility should be diagnosed if conception has not happened within 1 year of regular sexual intercourse without contraception. Thus, 40% of the pregnancy cases do not occur because of female infertility, 45% – of the low fertility male, and 15% because of problems in both partners. Therefore, the non-occurrence of pregnancy should be checked for fertility in both women and men.
What can affect a man's sperm count?
It is possible to rate male fertility not only qualitatively but also quantitatively. To do this, specialists define the sperm fertility based on his semen and establish the following characteristics:
- the number of sperm in the ejaculate,
- the sperm count of a normal structure (another name for this index – morphology).
In the event of each or several parameters, the sperm's fertility decreases.

Low fertility for men: what is the reason?
What can affect sperm quality? The deterioration of semen quality occurs for a variety of reasons. The most common ones are:
- taking place at the moment of the disease (e.g. varicocele, prostatitis, epididymitis, diseases, sexually transmitted diseases),
- previously suffered disease (e.g. mumps),
- the unfavorable ecological situation,
- taking certain medication groups (steroids, antibiotics),
- poor diet,
- alcohol consumption,
- frequent use of the sauna and so on.
In recent years, these factors cause a significant drop in sperm motility while increasing the proportion of their pathological forms. However, if you eliminate the causes of the decline of reproductive function and take additional measures, it is possible to increase male fertility.
How to increase male fertility?
Of course, there are male fertility drugs and male fertility vitamins. To begin, we'll examine in more details how the body produces mature sperm.
The process of sperm production is called ‘spermatogenesis’. The optimum temperature for spermatogenesis is 34°C. That is why for men overheating, frequent visits to saunas and even tight jeans and underwear are harmful. Abandoning them, man will be able to create the most favorable conditions in the body for the development of viable and motile sperm.
Spermatogenesis takes 72-74 days. During the day, a healthy man produces about 100 million spermatozoids. The process is the continuous production of sperm 24/7: some spermatozoids complete their maturation, others are just beginning to grow, while more of them are in the middle stages. During this period, the impact on the body of men of various unfavorable factors may have a negative impact on the development, mobility, structure and, consequently, the fertility of sperm. It is their biological ability to fertilize. Therefore, for 2-3 months before the alleged conception, a man should maintain a healthy lifestyle, as well as specially prepare for the future conception. The preparation should include taking zinc, vitamin E, and L-Karnithin. These are substances that increase the fertility of sperm. This advice is especially true for those men who have not revealed diseases that affect the quality of sperm.
