Basically folic acid is a vitamin. It is called vitamin B9 and it is water-soluble. Our bodies are capable of producing a certain amount of it.

Mostly it is formed in the stomach by certain kind of bacteria. However, we still need additional supply of the acid taken in foods.

The name “Folic” comes from the word which means “leafs”, as the acid for the first time was found in the greens.

Folic acid deficiency symptomsAccording to scientific data almost half of all women suffer from folic acid deficiency. This fact is significant, as the acid is essential for having healthy babies. Besides pregnancies, folic acid and its deficiency may have the following consequences:

  • Constant fatigue;

Folic acid plays a big role in our body. Primarily, this vitamin is involved in the production of new cells (i.e. participates in DNA synthesis) and in updating existing ones. This is especially true for red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body in different tissues and organs. The lack of vitamin B9 changes the shape of the erythrocyte – he grows in size and loses its flexibility and can no longer pass through the smallest vessels, as a result of anemia, ie, organs and tissues get less oxygen

Folic acid together with vitamin B12 stimulates hematopoiesis (the synthesis of new blood cells) in the bone marrow. But, we must remember that the lack of this vitamin may fail to divide any cells that are dangerous, for example, tumor cells.
