What is misophonia?

Misophonia is a very strange disorder. It is quite usual in everyday life but difficult to deal with.

You feel bad when someone chews chewing gum, cough  or drink soup in small SIPS? Perhaps you suffer from misophone  (misophonía), a term that literally means "hatred of sound", the hatred of sounds made by other people, in other words, this is an  acoustic -social hatred.

Here  we try to disclose  the disproportionate intensive reaction of the autonomic nervous system and limbic system on certain "normal" sounds  on  an abnormal  hyperactive auditory system.    In fact, people with a hypersensitivity to specific everyday sounds that cause extreme reactions such as irritability, anger and even panic.

It can cause even the sound of another's breathing, when eating, drinking or chewing a chewing gum, and even the children voices and screams.  The reaction to it can be expresssed in the form of stress, anxiety, and even rage. What is particularly interesting, some of the sounds that cause this  discomfort , have a relatively small volume in the order of 40 to 50 decibels, which is below the volume of normal conversation.

The misophone syndrome is also known as a selective sound sensitivity (SSSS or 4S).  It means feeling irritability or even panic to the  everyday sounds - when someone chews or shakes heavily for a ballpoint pen when  a text, it can be all signs that you suffer from misophonia.

It must be stressed that misophonia is not to be confused with  misogony  hiperakuzia. Hiperakuzia presents sensitivity to certain, abnormally, loud sounds , the person feels physical pain when he hears similar sounds.

Many people suffer from this disorder of hearing for many years without knowing it. Sometimes people can recognize the problem only when the disease creeps up. It may happen when a person is in his early 90s. This syndrome remains a mystery for scientists and doctors almost throughout the world.

There are two  news according to misophonia. The good one: if misophonia is a neurosis, the possible reversibility of the disease. Bad — in the absence of treatment by specialists, or attempts to change their own attitude using cognitive behavioral therapy or psychotherapy systematic desensitization, neurotic reactions, can provoke psychosomatic disorders and diseases.

When mircophone flash of irritation comes it leads first to somatovegetative discomfort: fatigue, general weakness, sweating, palpitations,  constant headaches. When such symptoms are ignored  they  can give impetus to the bronchial asthma development, atopic dermatitis, obesity, ischemia, ulcers of the stomach, intestines, rheumatoid arthritis, migraine, dyskinesia, pancreatitis.

According to the latest studying , the reason for this indignation to  everyday sounds , taking into consideration their small volume, that many of us don't even pay attention to, is in the  anatomical background features. And the reason could be connected, first of all, with physical anomalies, due to the Central nervous system structure, and, then, with person’s hearing.  There are no any existing scientific conclusions on this subject  in present time.

Also, experts believe that the cause of misohonia can be a nervous breakdown, which can be  based on negative feeling to a friend or , for example, on negative emotions to a person  who betrayed or committed an unforgivable offense. A person can deny  the appearance and sometimes the sounds of his abuser. An as the result, a physiological intolerance to sounds produced by that man comes immediately. Anyway, all this is individual and requires professional advice. But, definitely, the symptoms are worth paying attention to.  In fact,  any phobia can develop into a chronic disease and give a serious impact on physical and psychological health. So, as soon as you noticed the slightest evidence,  run to the doctor and find out the cause of this phobia!  But that is not a reason for being worried! Of course, it's not exactly AIDS, and psychologists believe that it can be treated, but it will take some time and energy. For each person individually the period of progressive treatment can vary from several weeks to months.

Misophone symptoms usually appear in late childhood but can begin at any age. As a rule, during the first reaction comes to meet  a certain sound, and then detonating sounds are added to the  list.Hearing the explosive sound people with misophonia react with irritation, anger, sometimes even showing signs of panic and violence. There are different degrees of misophonia. Its gradation can be measured using the scale of activation misophone (Misophonia Activiation Scale or MAS-1, in English), in which 11 different levels.

What to do

While some people try to mask the noise causing the phobia of music, others simply try to avoid it. It depends  on  the  misophonia levels. It is important to remember that  the consequences can be very serious. The patient may stop all personal relations, cancel  participating in social events and maybe even stop  going out of the house. People suffering from misophone, feel alienated and obstructed, because they are often  labeled  as hysterical  ones. Sometimes they are estimated as too sensitive people. So be sure to consult a doctor who can diagnose this deviation and you will be able to be sure that this is not a fiction.

Your doctor may recommend different types of treatment, such as therapy with tinnitus and cognitive-behavioral therapy, which, although not cure you of misioni, but will greatly help you to endure the annoying sounds. In addition to should talk about a problem that you have and it can be very helpful.

But if you don't want to go to a specialist, then you should overcome a phobia or at least ride it. Often in such cases misopfonichs find  agreements  inside the family circle. For example,  the TV is too loud when family members eat.  What to do?    For a misophonic it means a  "fasting day" for his ears, go into a restaurant and did not order all the dishes, but only dessert. Here's another version, a woman falls asleep with the headphones with the included fan, not to hear the snoring of her lover. For some it may seem ridiculous, but you wouldn't have laughed so hard.

It is very important that people living with someone who suffers from misophonia realize that his reactions are neither voluntary no psychological. If the patient causes excessive reaction on some noise that we create, it's not that he hated us or alienate us, just he has more close relationship between his hearing and the involuntary part of his nervous system. Although the patient  with  misophonia  will be inclined to isolate himself from the society  to avoid noises that bother him. There are mechanisms in place which can help him to struggle with this  problem by masking  the noise with the help of music, the use of headphones  and so on. You can find a lot of tips in the Internet, there are already support groups for people who suffer from misophonia.

How to avoid misophonia

Sensitivity to sounds – known as misophonia is not simply a slight irritation from the sounds, this also means that some sounds you just don't like. For those suffering from  such  disorder  intolerance to certain sounds becomes the dominant obsession that leads to depression, anxiety and severe anger outbursts.

Tip 1: You should know the "triggers" of  your anger . What exactly is your concern? You can have  nothing against the cough of your  colleagues, but when they  do it more often than usually  it makes you furious. Exactly what exasperated you?

One can find himself upset not because of  the sound itself but because of the constant  unpleasant sound expectation  and feeling of anger that comes  immediately after he  hears that sound.  But trigger could be not only the sound itself.

Tip 2: decide when you least react to sounds . When learning problems it is natural to focus on those moments when it manifests. But we also need to know how "not to do" problem. One way is to identify times when the problem does not occur.  Mind  your  reaction to the same sounds but when they do not irritate you .

Tip 3: Fill your life with what it was  missing . It is important to know that you are not alone. Do you find yourself alone and powerless? Think your life has no purpose, little of pleasure and creativity? If Yes, the stress (and lack of satisfaction of needs always causes stress) and can cause your sensitivity to sounds. Think about something that can fill this  gap.

Tip 4: Reconfigure your hearing.  I know this story. One man found a job working in an extremely noisy factory. If anyone else approached, because of the engine noise he couldn't make out a single word. But, to his great amazement, all  the other workers heard each other. Amazement rose to the greatest, when the week and it became all to hear. How? Why? Because of selective hearing, that's why.  If you stare at the wall, you will soon find that you can either focus the mind at one point or defocus look and see the area around this point. Eyes had not moved, and the focus changed. This can be done with hearing. When you are deeply immersed in a movie or a book, your ears can hear someone say your name, but the brain does not register this. In deep sleep, your ears hear everything, but the brain can't hear anything.  Try not to focus on "dangerous" for you sounds, focusing on other sounds of the world.

Tip 5: Overcome increased sensitivity to sounds with the help  of  hypnosis .  This method will help you to learn how to ignore the low passionate sounds and teach how to make your life better.

Take care about your life and life of  your  close people. Sometimes you are so busy  that  there is no time and desire to pay attention on something that is going on around you. Life is life! But sometimes it is better to prevent than to find the way out…
