How many books are in the Bible?

Do you know how many books are there in the Bible? Are they all sorted in chronological order? How does a list of books in the Bible look like? Here is everything you need to know.

books of the bible

Bible is a unique book. There is a lot to wonder about it. Today, we will talk about the books in the Bible: how many of them there are, how they are divided, and who are its authors.

The Bible we know consists of two parts. The first on is the Old Testament, while the seconds one is the New Testament.  Depending on what denomination we are talking about, Christians have between sixty-six and seventy-three books.

The division started back at the first meetings of early Christians that were supposed to decide what books can be called God-inspired Scriptures and which ones cannot. These events took place in the fourth century and served as the foundation to call seventy-three of the books from the Bible as inspired by God. However, as Martin Luther has started his movement called Reformation aiming to let people come to God, not to Church that got lost in its own traditions, he suggested that the Church has to overlook the canon of the Bible.

books of the bible in order

He examined the books and checked whether they could be considered as trustworthy enough and having enough biblical foundation to be in the Bible. That is why after a thorough examination he decided to take seven books out of the canon. Later he translated the Bible into German so that ordinary people and not only church clerics were able to understand it and apply. This Bible served as the standard for the rest of the Protestant churches throughout the world.

Therefore, Protestant Bible has sixty-six books while the Catholic has seven more. There are thirty-nine books in the Old Testament and twenty-seven in the New one. These numbers are different for the Catholics that have forty-six books in the Old Testament and twenty-seven in the New one.

This order is not chronological. The Bible has around forty men that wrote. They all lived in different times. So, the order their books were assembled does not necessarily correspond to the time they were written in. If the books were organized in the chronological order, then the Bible would look like this (after # you will see the number this book goes under in your Bible, not chronologically):
