The name “Nigeria” was given to the country in 1897. Prior to that the territory was colonized and occupied by British and the land was called Royal Niger Company Territories. However, that year a lady called Flora Shaw (journalist) has come up with an adequate name deriving from the name of the largest river of the region – Niger.

The name was favored and accepted by the rulers of that day. It remained so till this day. READ ALSO: Who named Nigeria? article to get more detailed information.
