The name you should know is Samuel Ajayi Crowther, because he was the very first African bishop. He was born in 1809 and his path to serving God and people led through slavery. He was captured and sold in captivity in 1821. He was kept hostage and sold to Portuguese, but when the ship just took to the sea it was confronted and overpowered by an English ship. All the captives were taken back and released by the Englishmen. In Sierra Leone his family was cared for by an Anglican church. He was baptized in 1825 and gave his life away to Jesus. He got education and became a teacher himself. He was the one to translate the Bible into Yoruba language and his ministry led him to become the first black bishop in Africa.
