Shipment as well as other similar services has many terms that need explanation. Lack of understanding may cost you money or trouble. One of such terms is “pre-advised”. It is a tricky one, too. A person may contact you and tell you: I have sent the shipment and the status is “pre-advised”. You may money for goods and expect them to arrive any time soon. Then you go online to check the status and it still is pre-advised. What does it mean? It simply means that the item has not been sent yet. The address label has been printed out and the person intends to mail the thing, but they have never gotten it the shipment service. So, be careful and get all the details first.

The term “pre-advised” is used in shipping things by mail. You may find such a status on the postal tracking service web site. It means the sender of the item has printed out the labels for it and notified the mail of the future delivery, but the item has not been actually delivered to the post office. It has not been given over to the delivery service and it is not on its way, yet. The shipping process was initiated, but they cannot provide you with terms and deadlines, as the item has not been delivered to them by the sender. In this case, you should contact the sender directly and find out, when the item would be turned in to the office.
