Should Arms Be Legalized In Nigeria?

Seeing the rate at which robbers and burglars are increasing terrorizing Nigerians, don't you think it is high time the National Assembly legislated to legalize the carrying of arms in Nigeria? Or do you think we are not mature enough to handle that, or that things have not got that bad in the country?

take a look at their crime rate too, relative to the size and level of economic development of their country.

We keep having problems with crime because our political elite know, in some collective-instinctual way, that they need a dysfunctional police force to maintain their hold on power.

How else can you rig elections and embezzle millions of dollars in public funds, if not by having the law enforcement apparati in your pocket? How do you keep them in your pocket except by ensuring the policeman is perpetually underpaid and hungry, always looking for bribes and civilians to shake-down in order to feed and clothe his family? Even the judiciary has been openly, fearlessly suborned before our very eyes in this current political dispensation, what with the flurry of ex-parte orders solely for the purpose of shielding executive thieves from justice.

Hmm! the case of assault by the so called area boys and robbers in Lagos is highly exaspirating, especially when you have once been a victim. I had an awful experience with these miscreants on two diferent occasions, the first one was at Oshodi Oke at about 8.00pm, the guy suddenly walked up to me that I should give him money to smoke so I looked at him with disgust and attempted to walk away, he suddenly got angry and pushed me back that if I try to be on the defensive, he will stab me and b4 I knew it they became 3 and they were all harrasing me, and out of fear I brought out 50 naira and one of them took it and they left me. now imagine if i had a gun I would av killed them 'cos of 50 naira. Another one was at Bar- Beach in Victoria Island, just takn a stroll with a chic o! and some hopeless dudes walked up to me, and the next thing was that they wanted to obtain me, they wanted my phone and my wallet. now if i was armed with a pistol, I wld av sent 'em to hell. but 'cos i had none i had to bail my self with some money, so I wolud be left alone to be the majority i will say YES!!!

It is legal to carry arms in Nigeria. It is just that the licensing requirements are very thorough and may discourage some people.

It is carrying hidden arms that is not really allowed.

The right for citizens to carry arms and form militia in most countries is not just to protect themselves from criminals, but to protect themselves from the government and the regular army when things get sour.

That is why the military can never take over government in the USA. When the army that is just 750,000 strong think of a population of 300,000,000 with up to 25 million well armed, they will reconsider.

I don't agree with Legalizing guns.

Here in Nigeria people beat up police men even without a gun. Just imagine what will happen if everyone now uses guns.

Having a gun is the beginning of restlessness. America as an example, mere seeing a man with hands in pocket or those big overall you will always want to take a hike before something bad happens.

I don't want such life for Nigerians though is inevitable in the future.

Even without the legalization of arms, we have quiet a number out there in the hands of silly people. With that said, i personally will love the legalization firstly for sercurity and finally to send alot of people home (people that make me feel bad especially. Don't know if you understand.

People already have access to and own arms in NIgeria. I remember our next door neighbour. He used to own a cool looking double barrel gun he kept locked up most nights. The Dude would bring the gun out on dark nights and shoot at the moon with it. I think that was signal to anyone who was thinking of invading the compound under cover of darkness that there was someone there with a gun and not afraid to use it and it worked.

A gun can be a protective weapon, no need for armoured car cos if you drive an armoured car, when yu get home and need to open your gate you can be ambushed by those lazy-Bottom losers(Armed robbers) If they can legalise the carrying of arms in nigeria, the rich , or atleast well to do will have beter guns and as such, the poor ones whose situation became as bad as it has turned out because they refused to either go to school or learn a trade, will have only the dane guns so we can be better off and as such they cant be harrassing innocent and hard working people like us and tu-face.

I will gladly pack my load and return to nigeria and contribute my quota towards nation building with my wealth of knowledge.

Untill then o, US embassy and UK high commission will continue making excess revenue from people trying to flee the country.

I hope they get to look into arms ASAP

A Khan says:

1.This is a country which is always experiencing enthnics or tribal riot, let take a look at the number of innocent people that were killed during the past enthnic riots and this was without guns or with few guns.tell me if d number of people that would b killed ll nt b multiply by 3 of those killed if the use of guns{legalized}was invoke.

I say:

That is why every one needs gun. To check the excesses of some fools. Until Zango Kataf, nobody checked them. Later when the ibo' s also got some guns and challenged them in Kano, the fools learnt their lessons.

Seun says: Gun does not protect, get armoured tank

I say attack is the best form of defence.

If i am not attacked, i wont have to use it. But i will need it to protect myself, when such is allowed.

About the thieves,  as i said earlier, they go because they know people dont have guns.

In those days, thieves run when they are caught. These days, they ask you to come and open your door to them. Why? Because they have what you dont have--gun. If i have a gun no thief can ask me to open any door. I will just open his brain with bullets. So no thief will be out of reach of the  police.

Gun is already legalized. what remains now is just for it to be made "easily available and acquirable".

A gun is not a protective weapon; it's an assault weapon.

It does not protect; it kills. If you want protection, get an armored car!

it will also prevent criminals from being arrested by the police.

The ideal thing is not to have to use your gun.

Once you have to use it, you're very likely to end up dead.

@ Seun

No, that is the reason why i should carry a gun. If they know i have what they have, they will not harras me because they know it will just be a matter of who is faster and more skillful in the use of the same weapon that we have.

I believe it will bring some respect. They are not all dead in the US, are they? Gradually, we will get used to it. At the initial stage there may be some indiscriminate use of guns but later evryone will come to respect oneanother.

Qoute from jintujinta: I will support that everyone should learn how to use guns and get one. Why?

1. Because of those notorious and oppressive policemen. I feel like shooting them when i see them harrass innocent citizens on their way to work. They know the robbers but they extort money from innocent citizens all because they have an edge- the gun. Policemen are legalized armed robbers. They rob us with their guns. if we too have guns, they will respect us. Afterall some of them do run away from robbers.

jintujinta, if this is your reason 4 a country[2 b precise, Nigeria] 2 legalize d use of guns, then we will have no policemen in this country because all of them fall into one or all of the categories u mentioned plus corruption. well i support your 2nd & 3rd reason.but if i'm to choose wheither it should be legalize or not, my answer will be IT SHOULD NOT BE LEGALIZE.

Reasons

1.This is a country which is always experiencing enthnics or tribal riot, let take a look at the number of innocent people that were killed during the past enthnic riots and this was without guns or with few guns.tell me if d number of people that would b killed ll nt b multiply by 3 of those killed if the use of guns{legalized}was invoke.

2. Do u want our country 2 turn in2 a country where the husband & wife will have a little disagreement and the nxt u hear is "boooooooom"the wife don kill her husband because they querel.

To be or not to be? That is not the question because already some people are licenced to carry guns. May be the question is why should we carry guns?

I will support that everyone should learn how to use guns and get one. Why?

2. Because of the armed robbers. No armed robber will want to invade any house any where, if he knows the house owner is well equipped to resist his invasion. Most of the armed robbers azre small boys that can not stand you fist for fist on a normal day. But you will postrate for them, they will slap you and you will surrender your property to them willingly, all because they carry guns. Sh-t. I cant stand it. Honestly, every one needs guns.

3. Mutual respect for humanity. This is another reason why we need guns. That cousin got killed because she ran for gun but did not make up her mind before doing it. She wanted to oppress but was slow. A good man once said, anytime you point a gun at anyone, know that your own life too is at stake. It is either the other person too will kill you first or the law will kill you for indiscriminate of the gun. There will always be the law to check indiscriminate use and fear of geting killed by the time you introduce the subject of gun.

I fully support the use of guns by evry one.

This is just solving a problem and creating a bigger one.

I tell you if the licence is issued today, before you wake up the next morning, someone you know would have been shot dead.

Even the police that were trained to use gun dont even know when and how to use the sh**t

it is no longer a question of legalization, you just need a license to have a gun now but the question is: is it worth it and how does that improve the safety of lives and properties or increase the level of security? we are too lawless in thir country to handle each nogerian having access to a gun.

all the big men will suffer it the most sha cos all the area biys beefing them and their political opponents will nit want ti see them have a life, then the country will be in chaos

the govt should work in improving the security agents and make them sophisticated enough to handle security matters effectively

Nice Topic!

I don't think legalisation of arms is what we need. Considering the rate at which people react to issues in Nigeria, a simple argument in a populous football viewing centre as to which team wins the match (e.g. Chelsea vs Manchester United) is enough to wipe off hundreds of people at once! In a society where human lives have no value whatsoever after some quantity of weed you just need that to reduce our population by 50% in just one year! The police should be better equipped, I think.

@Poster

Carrying arms has been legal in America for years as long as you register  the weapon legally.  One time, my home was broken into, and it took me about two weeks to feel at ease.  I mean when I came home and the door had been broken in, goods taken out of it, drawers opened and clothes thrown all over the place, I felt very invaded.  It was like someone had actually walked easily in my house, gone through my things, and it was very unnerving to me.  Like I said, it took some time to just relax again in my own house.

For the first time, I actually thought about purchasing a gun and registereing it, of course, for my own protection.  However, my cousins (female and male) who were brother and sister got into a confrontation one day with some notorious young guys in an apartment complex  in a northern state.  My female cousin ran to the car and got there first, and she pulled out her gun, which she had the legal right to carry (for it was registered legally); however, when she picked the gun up in her hand, she hesitated--just long enough to be shot in the head by one of the guys who was in pursuit of her.  She was murdered, and her brother, who had gotten into the argument in the first place with these guys is still living with the guilt.  When this happened, I did not purchase a gun.  I am not properly trained to use one, and to tell you the truth, I had no desire to seriously learn how to use a gun.  Therefore, I did not get one.

Carrying a weapon is one thing.  Being able to spontaneously use one in a stressful situation is another thing.  My cousin's hesitation caused her her life.  No one knows how they will react in a stressful and frightening situation.  We can only believe we will do this or do that.  But  if given the choice, I would rather have access to a gun in a life threatening situation than not have one.

Carrying arms is already legal in Nigeria - as long as you have the appropriate license

there are many people who own private firearms, so I don't see it as such a novelty.

If you're talking of more widespread availability of weapons, I would say no - like others have said, even controlled substances like poisons and acid gets used freely, guns would just be worse. Having a weapon of your own is no guarantee or enhancement of safety in general, someone who wants to maim, harm or rob will simply purchase superior weapons or attempt to catch you unawares.

, But i have to say , The idea does not seem like a bad one if there was a way of regulating it. I mean whenever I think of going back to Nigeria, I think I need to get me the best double barrel I can lay my hands on so anyone who tries to harrass me and my family will know I am not there to play games. I have nightmares when I dream of going back to Nigeria.

Why chase shadows when we have failed to address the real problem our people, our society has

Our problem isn't what should be legalized or what should not be, but the level of illiteracy in the society.

You can quote me, if legalized 95% of people who own arms will use it to terrorize their neighbors,

after all abi u no know who I be, I go show you say i get gun now ,

Maybe u are unknowingly legalizing armed terrorism, it doesn't have to be OSAMA u know,
