The problems of domestic violence (the victims of which usually are women) have been actively discussed recently in the West — in the 60-ies of XX century, and in some countries to this subject don’t usually pay attention.
For comparison: in the West, they consider the psychological violence serious offence, that in some countries, such as France, it is a criminal offence.
Domestic violence is a multidimensional phenomenon, it may be due to the psychological characteristics of those who accomplish the violent acts, and due to the education, norms and ideas of every culture (mainly with regard the distribution of roles in the family).
THE PSYCHOLOGICAL ROOTS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
The psychologists began seriously to study the phenomenon of domestic violence relatively recently, about 30 years ago. However, it has already accumulated a considerable amount of knowledge about the causes of this phenomenon.
People who are prone to violent acts, as a rule, are with low self-esteem and low social status (the domestic violence against his members of family can play a compensatory role). They are incapable to control their emotions, regularly consume alcohol or drugs. In addition, the investigations in different countries such as Indonesia, Nicaragua, Spain, USA, Venezuela, showed that those who in childhood was suffered of beatings and watched as his father beats the mother, they personally are ready to use violence against people who love them. So, it is probably that a boy whose father abused the mother, in the future will treat similarly with his wife. In the childhood the scheme of good conduct is founded by parents. They must explain to their child what is good and what is bad.
The violent actions are often the result of family conflicts.
It is known that a particularly high level of domestic violence is fixed in countries where violence is typical to society as a whole, in particular, where society is still recovering from the effects of armed conflict.
THE PATRIARCHAL CULTURE AND FAMILY VIOLENCE
If the violence proceeds due to conflict between spouses and it is generally episodic, so the so-called Patriarchal terrorism is the systematic use of physical and psychological violence to women by men.
The investigation show us that in the Patriarchal societies, where men have the economic power, and women doesn’t have the opportunity of divorcing, so in such countries the level of violence in the family is very high. And it is considered by all parties as something natural and fair.
The tolerance of some types of family violence is a consequence of certain beliefs about the organization of society and the family, which are common to the various Patriarchal cultures:
- as a subject of legal and economic relations in such societies is not considered an individual person, they consider the family in general;
- the head of the family which legally and politically is responsible for his relatives is the husband;
- the main activity of the husband is to maintain the order in the family and punish those who violate it;
- other family members should obey its head, whose authority is unquestioned.
The scientists show us that such views are typical for people of different countries, such as Bangladesh, Cambodia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.
In Muslim countries, Patriarchal distribution of roles in the family isn’t just a tradition, but the tradition by religion. The husband is the head and protector of the family, he is obliged to financially support. The woman is responsible for educate children and should be in all things obedient to her husband. So, we can say that physical violence is a normal thing.
In Africa there are many shelters for women who suffer from domestic violence. Here they can recover from the violence during tribal conflicts.
The investigations show us that domestic violence widespread and frequent all over the world.
We must pay attention that 28 per cent of all women, almost a third part of all women in Nigeria, have suffered from physical violence.
Up to 43 per cent of women consider that wife beating could be justified on the grounds of matters like
- burning the food;
- arguing with the husband;
- going out without asking permission;
- neglecting the children; and
- refusal to have sexual intercourse.
Also they indicated that in Nigeria the young women between the ages of 15 and 24, were most exposed to have a physical violence from their husbands. They were also ready to justify the violence, including wife beating.
Domestic violence in Nigeria is a problem as in many parts of Africa. There is a deep cultural belief in Nigeria that it is normal, acceptable to fight with a woman to discipline her. Domestic violence is widespread nowadays. The scientists also have found a swift increase of domestic violence in the past 3 years. This terrible statistics have increased from 21% in 2011 to 30% in 2013.
Domestic violence can be expressed in many forms including physical, sexual, emotional, and mental. Traditionally, domestic violence is committed against the weaker sex. In Nigeria there are many forms of domestic violence. It can be rape, acid attacks, molestation, wife beating, and corporal punishment.
Of course there are a lot of organizations which protect poor women from wicked people. They are: Project Alert on Violence Against Women, Center for the Protection of the Abused, Women Action Organization, Women Justice Program, Women's Centre for Peace and Development, Women's Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative. People which work there are always ready to help you in every situation.
In my opinion there are a lot of ways to resolve the conflict. So why don’t some persons understand that? If you will fight, bit, use violence, your relationship problem doesn’t go anywhere. You have a problem in your mind. So everything depends on you.
