It is a sad thing when your phone gets stolen. Surely you want to block it and prevent the thieves from using it or reselling. However IMEI code is not meant for destroying the phone. Ideally if the person shuts the phone down, they will not be able to turn it on again, unless they know the IMEI. If they do not turn the phone off, they may be able to reprogram it and use it again. THrough IMEI you might be able to track your phone down using GPS system. But you would have to register on the web site first (having your phone on hands) and afterwards you might be forced to make several international phone calls (to US) to treck the phone through the code. Learn how the IMEI can be tweaked.

You may track your phone using IMEI number. If the one who stole turns off the phone, it's over. They would never be able to turn it on and use it again. So, do not worry over the thing. Either track it down and try to get the phone back or forget about it.

No, you cannot “destroy” the stolen phone using the IMEI code. However, if you have registered it properly, you can try to spot it and get it back. Once you buy an Apple phone, you need to register it on their website and attach the IMEI code to your email address. At this it is the best to keep the packaging of the phone with the serial number on it.

If it gets lost or stolen, you can contact the manufacture and send a request to trace it. However, it may require making some phone calls to USA, which could be expensive. In some cases, such a thing is not effective and the phone cannot be recovered. However, if that person turned the phone off or you did it, no one can use it but you, as IMEI cannot be hacked.

Talkin abt callin dis network folks, save ur batteries dude.

My fone was stolen by a pickpocket in ibadan, while on my way to abj. And I called etisalat, they directed me to nokia. I emailed nokia and they re-directed me to etisalt: like ping pong ball.

Nokia howeva made a point: activate phone lock code. That's d surest way to make d fone useless to whoeva stole.

D imei blockin tin worked as per some stolen blackberries that were brought here; they wldnt work. Infact, the operation was funny. A friend bought one like that.

I don't think think dis network i.diots wld do sometin abt blockin fones via imei no in d next 5years

Okija,this is no joke.lol

Chyket, what was the brand of phone u insured, where did u insure it and for how much.

Insuring a phone though is different from blocking the IMEI,btw.Different purposes, different results.

Yh well, that too aint easy. Getting RIM to do that. They need proof of ownership etc.

And things don't reaaally work or conform well to overseas standards. E.g. Proof of ownership

And how much is that per month in Nige?

I'm guessing it would vary according to the brands too yh?

you do realise that there's a difference between insuring a phone and blocking a stolen/missing phone.

the subject matter relates to blocking a phone. not insuring a phone.

I do not know about Nokia, but if it were to be a BB and you had activated your BB protect, you could retrieve your details and get the manufacturers to deactivate the BBM capabilities. At least no sane buyer will buy a balckberry that he wount be able to ping with. IMO

It happened to me months back. I call my service providers. They told me that there is no law that empower them to block your stolen phone via IMEI.

Its simply... Just create a new message, send the IMEI number to the same IMEI number. For example, if your IMEI numeber is 12345....15, then send 12345.....15 as message to 12345.....15 and thats all. your phone will be blocked. But i dont know if it works in nigeria.

I think most Nigerians don't know you can insure your phones with little or next to nothing.

When you do this with a reputable insurance Companies, your phones will be replaced when stolen. It has worked for me over the years and I encourage people to give it a trial.

Ooh! Soo waanted to try that. Don't have d IMEI number too. But hoping the network would have it, because they usually have details of the phone that connects to the networks. On contract anyway. Don't know abt payg

in a country where virtually everything and anything is and can be stolen i seriously do not understand why this service is not available in nigeria.

seriously, i wish i could block my phones that were stolen.

Ive toyed with the idea of calling my phone subscriber in the uk to block the phone.

unfortunately, on each occasion i've failed to follow this through as i do not have the IMEI number. Although, i do not know if it'll work.

Probably worth a try!

@OP I can only say 'kpele' to you.

We have been asking for this service in Nigeria for some years now but the network providers are obviously not interested in it even though it will benefit their customers.

They probably dont see any economic sense in it for their business and may just prefer that once you lose you phone you may come back to them to buy anoda one from their special offers.

If implemented it will definitely put and end to the lucrative bizness of stolen phones. Since with ur IMEI number your missing phone can be locked off all the networks and the person who buys it will find it useless.

Lets wait and pray that one of the Network providers takes the bull by the horn. Once one of them starts it, the others will be forced to follow.

it is unfortunate this happened, please, when you buy another phone, get in touch with me, i have a software that enables you track your phone, retrieve your data, including all your contacts, remotely, after that, you destroy the data on the phone, also remotely, if you are keen about having the phone back, with the GPS in the software, the phone with a policeman accompanying you, will be gotten back. So you have lost nothing. Daniel - 08033259595, cxploitsltd@yahoo.com

Call all the major GSM operators CC

MTN-181 or 180

ZAIN-111

GLO -121

u can include MTEL & ETISALAT if u like.

During each call, supply the cc representative with the IMEI number and other details like make & model and the day it was stolen.

Use ur sense when making the calls, cos they might not help you if u are rude or if they suspect dat u are not a member of their network.

When the deed is done, celebrate with 20 naira grass and feel the pleasure of being wicked
