Is Nas Truly a Nigerian?

There has been so much controversy over [his nationality]. I don't think Nas is a Nigerian, or what do you have to say?

Nas was born in the States back in 1973. His father is a Nigerian, but he moved to Brooklyn, New York and there he gave birth to his famous son. So, there is some Nigerian blood in him, but he does not position himself as a Nigerian.

This information from audio is more than correct and that explains it all.

Nas is definitely not Nigerian. He was at a press conference organized by BET and he was saying that Africans look down on Americans. His dad was one of those conscious dudes, so he took an African name and gave Nas one. It was all the rage in the seventies and eighties apparently

I dont think Nas is a Nigerian, but i guess his dad believe his ancestors came from Nigeria read this.

Olu Dara (born Charles Jones III in Louisville, Mississippi[1] in 1941) is a trumpeter, cornetist, guitarist and singer. He first became known as a jazz musician, playing alongside avant-garde musicians such as David Murray and Henry Threadgill.

His first album under his own name, 1998's In the World: From Natchez to New York, revealed another aspect of his musical personality: the leader and singer of a band immersed in African-American tradition, playing an eclectic mix of blues, jazz, and storytelling, with tinges of funk, African popular music and reggae. His second album Neighborhoods, with guest appearances by Dr John and Cassandra Wilson, followed in a similar vein.

Rapper Nas (Nasir Jones) is Dara's son. He encouraged his father to record the music he was playing with his band, and guested on a track on "In the World". Dara played the cornet on the track "Life's A Dam" from Nas's debut album Illmatic in 1994. In 2004, his vocals and trumpet were featured on Nas's single "Bridging the Gap", from his album Street's Disciple.

He was given the name "Olu Dara" by a Yoruba priest when he returned to America. He has traveled throughout Africa and Europe

NAS is NOT nigerian at ALL. Yes he has a nigerian name but a lot of other people do. He just happens to be cole to a lot of nigerians. One of his best friends was Nigerian but he died at a club. May his soul rest in peace. Nas is not nigerian. I am a fan and Ihave met him before. i knew his friend that actually dies. NO LIES. He isn't nigerian.

Yes it matters if he is Nigerian or not? Because if he is he can not go around rapping about guns and bullshit which he doesn't do. And it is true that Queens is known for its Nigerian population because my mother has many relatives that have lived there for some time. Also, you should not call him an African American because his roots are very much tracable, so at least refer to him as an Nigerian American if you wish. By the way, as a Nigerian, I am proud that he carries the Nigerian blood in his veins because he represents it well; as a person, what he raps about, squashing the beef with Jay-Z,ect. THAT IS DEFINITELY THE NIGERIAN BLOOD IN HIM! God Bless Him

@menike, Nas is not nigerian. neither is his dad. His dad adopted the name Olu Dara. U know all these african american that are trying to find their heritage. when they meet original africans, they beg u to tell them about africa, the culture etc and then they even take names etc. that is exactly the case with NAS.  and NAS dad never lived in Africa... they don't even claim africa or nigeria.

Nas is not really nigerian, it's just that his parents believe their forefathers were enslaved from nigeria

0

Newbie

Ok ..erm. Nas has got Nigerian blood flowing through his veins. Oludara (Nas' father) is Nigerian But i don't think Nas claims to be Nigerian because the father himself grew up in Mississipi (sp?) and gave birth to Nas there in the States.

He's got Nigeria blood but he aint Nigerian.
