There are 16 West Africa region countries. Most of them have developed and got independent after the decolonization, which took place in the middle of the 20th century. Now, the reason why in some countries of the area people speak French or English is simple. Most countries have many tribes living in them, like Nigeria has over 300 tribes with 500 languages spoken in its territory. So, these states adopted foreign languages to unite them into one nation. Algeria is the number one French speaking country in the West African region. In the rest of them up to 80 percent of population can speak that language. Overall there are 29 African countries, where French is recognized as the official language.
