To be honest, the country is breaking into bits.
Security was beefed up yesterday around the Federal Secretariat Abuja following alleged threats by Niger Delta militants to bomb the complex if the Federal Government refuses to relocate the Ministry of Niger Delta from Abuja to the Niger Delta region.
A Daily Trust reporter observed yesterday that the separate buildings housing the former Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) were unusually guarded by heavily armed mobile policemen and staff were made to queue up and show identification to be permitted entry into the building.
People with genuine reasons like contractors are also allowed into the secretariat during the working hours while visitors are only allowed entry from 12: pm with their identification cards.
Both the exit and entrance to the building were manned by Nigeria Civil Security Defence Corps officials, policemen and plainclothes officials carrying walkie-talkies.
The normally busy lane in front of the building was cordoned off from both sides by police vehicles including a police bomb disposal squad truck while the service lane meant for pedestrian has been taken over by vehicles.
