Does Nigeria Really Need Another Satellite Now?

With poverty and unemployment of gifted graduates plaguing the land, the last thing we need is a satellite that "monitors disasters." we already have lots of disasters. i consider the present brain-drain one of the top on the list of disasters. in some quarters, people will argue that nigeria needs the image and prestige. sure, we need the prestige. why not start a well-planned car-manufacturing project. nigeria is capable of producing its own automobiles. this will go a long way in providing jobs for our youths. why can't the govt. gather world-class nigerian engineers and investors around the world to make this dream a reality?

However before this can be done, we need stable power supply, which nigeria is capable of providing if the govt. gets its sense of focus and priority right. there are lots of prestigious projects that nigeria can embark on, which will benefit the hungry masses on nigerian soil. do we have citizens in space?

give your views about this topic, people.

PS: I little bit of idealism can be tolerated.

I support the fact dat we r going to have another satelite, matter of fact we need 2 start manufacturing the parts in Nigeria in other words making it from scratch. If we r going to sell it to other countries or give them services espescially our neighbours then dats alright. Time don reach 4 this kind advancement now even if nothing e go boost our morals and in directly bring opportunities.

There is nothing to set up another satellite , this is they claim is for communication, it would save us alot of money , But the location of the earth station is what i disagree with . I think Benue state or kogi is a better place to have the station and not abuja,

Yes!!! Build several more of the darn things. Information is the key to freedom and power! If you have to depend on slavemasters like the USA or the UK you will never prosper. There is no excuse or reason why Africans are not building automobiles, airplanes, launching satellites, building subways, continental railways, etc. The money is there! Oil is over 60.00 a barrel US. In NY, we are getting killed trying to afford the petrol now. You got diamonds, water, land, land, and more land. If raggedy china can build a car and launch a rocket why not Africa. Nigeria and S. Africa should be amongst the leaders of the world right now. You have smart engineers already there. Why not recruit some of these hot young african-american engineers to give you a hand. We all look the same, we are the same people. We gotta work together or we won't have sh*t! Its that simple. If you don't think so, YOU are part of the problem.

Yes to the question. I believe that Nigeria need another Satelite. The first satelite was deployed to monitor restive youths of the Niger Delta (especially after they threatened the Federal Govt with war). It was also deployed to monitor MASSOB (perhaps OPC) just in case one of them pull the secessionist string once more. This satellite was suppose to be use d for monitoring troop movement (accross the Niger).  Of course, it can also monitor Cameroon and Chad especially in view of our frequent border skirmishes. (I only wonder why it could not pin point Bellview Airline crash site)

That nothwithstanding, the first satellite was able to achieve its objectives. It needed to be "consolidated", hence the need for a second one.

Hero has dealt with how the second satellite  could be used. Except that he did not mention that it can also be deployed to spy upon Nigerians themselves, political opponents and percieved enemies of the Federation.

I dont really care what other evil it may be used for or whether its Niger Delta oil money thats used to build it; it does not matter if I prefer steady electricity power supply or water supply better (cos I aint getting those from this fraudulent government), but if it will make communication faster, cheaper, let have it cos I dont have a choice (or say).

@ Otokx

I disagree with you. whether we need it or not i dont care as long as the money did not go back to somebody's pocket.

Dont forget, quite a lot of Nigeria's scientist educate themselves when the first one was launched.

well, hotspice, the govt is planning to launch a second satellite in 2006. it can only provide jobs for, at most, a few hundred people. that's is not significant.

secondly, i wasn't talking about car assembly, i am talking about producing our own cars. peugeot is not nigerian.

stable power supply come 2015? wow, Togo will be a superpower by then.
