Is It Illegal To Carry A Laptop? I Was Arrested For Carrying One

This incident took place around december last year around Ikotun Egbe when i was visiting a friend. Well,

there i was, on a saturday morning going to visit a friend and i took my lappy along just for the fun of it.

And the next thing i knew was that a hungry-looking guy approached me from the back asking what was

in my laptop, after looking him up and down, he now said he was a policeman and produced something that

looked like a very old and photocopied ID card.

While i was still thinking of what to make of that, another guy came from the other other side and asked me

to go and enter one "danfo" vehicle. They were both in plain's clothes, and we were in a very busy place.

@that point, i was thinking they were probably thieves and i was already planning to teach them a lesson

in martial arts (God saved me). Then i stylishly called my friend while they were temporarily distracted.

Meanwhile i asked them why i should go to the danfo, and they said they had to take me to a station to search

my laptop if i was a 419. And i asked them if this was a standard procedure now in the policeforce that if someone

carries a laptop, then, that person must go to the policestation by force. I used all sort of delaying tactics, then

the arresting officer told his boys to round me up. By now, alot of people have gathered and were watching, so i was

sure they were most likely police. I used all sort of delaying tactics, i even emptied my laptop bag and all on the roadside

and asked them to see what i was carrying, that instead of station, letz settle it then = then the arresting officer said

"he was not a roadside police", in short, that my friend's father happens to be a high ranked policeman, by the time they

got there, as in my friend and his father, the policemen had to calm down, and let me go.

The funny thing was that, they never asked to see my ID card(they said they were not interested) or even receipt. I was later informed that this was how the police worked in some areas. So now i am thinking, if i leave my house in the morning, and i am on my way to work, and carry

my office laptop. and then, i can get arrested as a suspect and whisked to the policestation or what?

The Police in Ikotun are always ruthless because they are always after extortion of money from the fraudsters and they wouldn't mind check for proper things and such thing-they don't fancy. Anyway, that's their way of life in Ikotun. I was arrested with my laptop in my arm while I was on my way to school. I got delayed but at the end I was cursed that I was a poor person. They should be checked over there, They are not worthy of being a Federal republic of Nigeria Police.

What about reciepts? are we supposed to carry laptop receipts ? A policeman once stopped my car to ask for the receipts of the laptop, My handset was even more costly than the laptop. It was not a small thing. I had to settle. I thought its a personal gadget like my PDA

Guys, two things are evident here:

1. Some of these pple are computer illitrate. they can't even differentiate booting from their boot or troubleshooting from shooting

2. Economic situation have so affect majority to have poverty mentality. So seen a lappy, the first thing they imagine is can one afford afford it and the next is inquisition.

This also made those pple high ball to rol when they see lappy and determine not leave the carrier freely.

it is also believed by about 20% or more nigerian that all carrying lappy are "yahoo boys". you cn iagine someone saying that a 50+ yr old man engaging in FX

So, what are we saying

@pricekevo,

I like your yan, i carried my desktop one day which was faulty, , one man in plain cloth was trying to interrogate me, with

my anger, (i have a bad temperament ) said to him if his own lost, I said that he should be very careful the way he talk to people or else he will loose his uniform, he just leave me alone, first I am an elderly person, if anyone of them want wahala i will go all out and give it to them,

spiritually, physically, etc, you don't blame them too, they make their money from the yahoo boys, but they can read you from the tone of you

voice, they always let me have my way always, because i don't belong to the 419 group

If I was lawyer, I would take up these type of cases for free. This is a Mafia style shakedown, not law enforcement at all. It has been going on for far too long in Nigeria and it is very annoying. The custom officers at MMA are not different as well.

Its funny how the Nigerian police in their so called random ''stop & search'' operations asks you for receipts of frivolous items like dilapidated laptops & pressing iron but won't ask u for d receipt a $1000 Rolex watch on ur wrist.

In Nigeria anything that you have and someone in a position of power over you does not have, is illegal.

the annoying thing is if the laptop gets stolen, they won't do poo to help you get it back, bunch o clowns.

Na wa oo!!! What the hell?!?!

How did they even see it? Guess you were carrying it in your hands, next time carry a back-pack!

But that's still silly, illegal to carry a laptop, nonsense!!

I dont think so. . . . It is all cos of the 419 thing. . . . But they need to be better educated on how to arrest people and not just harass the citizens

Steal the laptop and do what with it, some have no idea what laptop is for and what is all about.

They are hungry and just need money from you.

It happened to one of my in-laws. He was stopped in his car and because he refused to answer some ridiculous questions e.g how much salary does he earn to be able to buy a 06 model car, they kept harassing him. Eventually after he had finished arguing with them, one individual sighted his laptop in the back seat and confiscated asking for a receipt. Once he had explained that it was company issued, they then insisted on turning it on to see what was in it. Unfortunately to cut long story short in the process of trying to operate it they damaged it and he lost some crucial project files (he is an architect). He subsequently proceeded to beat the officers badly and was arrested. Well by the time his military friends came to get him out, I can assure that all the officers in that station had learned a serious lesson. Nowadays he doesn't stop for any policeman unless forced and once he has answered to 2-3 questions, he is starting his engine and driving off, even if he has to hit any policeman in the process.

With these tactics that some of our policemen/women are using to extort money from people, no wonder they continue to look hungry and wretched. Yes, they are not well taken care of by the Govt, but the solution is not to harrass innocent citizens who are probably going through some sort of hardship themselves.

That's true, that's what they now do around Dugbe, they will stop your car, this is different from normal road blocks, they are after yahoo boiz and will even stop your bike and if the okadaman refuse to stop, they will chase him.

The last time they collected Paul Smith shoe from my friend just because they saw international number on his phone

It's so sad this happens in Nigeria, I was arrested liket this too in April 2008 but unfortunately for me, I had no receipt in my bag and I was even already late for a job interview, I was delayed for about 2 hours in the hold-up in their bid to drive us to the police station. At the end of the day, I had to use 1000 naira to bail myself out at the station, was just lucky I didn't lose the job. The most annoying part of it is that there was no documentation whatsoever concerning the incident (just drove me to the station without listening to me - with AK47 staring me in the face) to forestall any future arrests cause I was wondering that I could still be arrested by another bunch of hungry-looking policemen on my way after leaving the station.

Had a similar experience to the post: Last year my younger brother was carrying a laptop bag when two scruffy looking chaps accosted him and said he should open the bag up. me thinking that i was some festus keyamo asked them who they be and some i.d. they promptly showed me their battered police i.d's not to be out did i said they may search my bros' person but not his bag only unless they have a warrant. i further asked them if anything is missing in the vicinity or do they suspect him of a crime. of course they didnt answer. i then told my bro gimme the bag i'll hold it, as luck or ill-luck would have it a pick up carrying a squad of mopol showed up and said "my friend open the bag" which i sharply did to avoid being another statistic. when the the so called laptop bag was finally opened lo and behold it was my p.s 2 conveniently tucked away to avoid me looking unserious as i stabbed worked that day. when they realised their blunder the mopol said i should go. but being a red blooded youth i proceeded to say some things to the cops that im sure will annoy their parents, wahala i was now arrested for "insulting a police officer".

i sha got out of it as i saw a friends dad who helped me out. i'm sure if i add im a lawyer you will definitely say i no try, but guy!!! me no say i try

i hv had series of ugly experiences wit Nigerian police, as a system technician most of d times am in pocession of a laptop, i go 2 computer village almost evry day 2 buy parts, nd dea d fight ensue, men in black asking me 4 laptop receipt, if am lucky 2 have collected d receipt 4rm my client anoda fight wld ensue cause de want me 2 open d laptop, de want to check d content, i hv been very unlucky sometimes as d laptop content is ilegal, de wld ask me 2 produce d owner nd u re dea 4 hours. but realistically what i have notice is dat men in black always study ur dressin b4 aproaching u, so what did i do?, i went to d market nd got a full load of shirts, pant trousers nd tie, i can confidently tell u dat i carry laptop to nd fro ikeja on bike nd in my car without hidin it, dress well nd be composed when interacting wit men in black, once de notice u re well composed when speaking de become uncomfortable wit u nd i tell u de will want to discharge u @ once,

just wondering what will happen to those guys that do not have policemen as relations or friends.

i have had my own experiences, the first happened on the day i bought a laptop from a colleague of mine, he gave the receipt to me with a note transferring ownership to me written at the back of the receipt.

just as the bike man dropped me at the bus-stop(which happened to be at the back of a police station) 2 policemen approached me, they asked what was in the bag i told them it was a laptop, asked for the receipt which i showed them but they were not satisfied so they took me to the station told their superior that i initially declined to show them the receipt and as such they are suspecting me.

i started a hot argument with them on why i should show them the receipt, why didnt they ask for the receipt of my phone and other things i had with me, just then one of them received a call, and when i saw the phone(far costly than the laptop) he was using i asked him if he was carrying the receipt of the phone with him.

I was determined not to give them anything(i spent 1hr 30mins at the counter),when they saw that i would not cooperate, they said i must call the guy would sold it to me, well he came after another 30mins before they allowed me to go.

I was once arrested with a colleague for having a copy Haliburton Vacancy Advert. They can cook up anything just to collect bribe.

was also arrested for having a lapie. unfortunately for them my laptop dual boots(windows and Linux), and always boots to linux first. So on getting to the station the silly PM fumbled with the laptop for hours without knowing how to operate it. He kept insisting that there must be something on the laptop, and I told him to proof it. Seeing that am not being helpful and he had to return to the road so that the whole day wouldn’t be wasted for him, he finally had to let me go without paying a dime.

I wajust reading this Laptop story. The way round it is very simple. Print yourself an official ID card. Tell whoever enquires of you. 'that you are carrying an official laptop and receipts are generally not given out to staff, it is retained by the Management Services of your Company. If you string your english together and correctly and also sound a bit 'bossy', the policeman or whoever it is will meekly apologise and disappear. I have adopted this approach severally. (but then i use only lappies bought for me by my employers anyways. I think if i buy one personally, i will just inscribe my office name to it)
