Police Arrests Donald Duke- Must They Arrest Like This?

The political crisis in Cross Rivers State reached new highs Friday, when police, acting on the instructions from "above" disrupted the ceremony for the inauguration of the Women and Children Hospital built in Calabar by wife of former governor of the state, Donald Duke, Onari, taking him away for interrogation midway into the ceremony.

Mr Duke was driven away in his car, sandwiched between some senior police officers, to the state police headquarters at Diamond Hill where he was interrogated and afterwards released. He returned to the venue of the ceremony just when it was over to the palpable relief of his wife and admirers. He did not witness the cutting of the tape at the reception of the hospital.

A detachment of anti-riot policemen, led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police [operations], arrived at the venue and went straight to the master of ceremony and demanded to know who were the organizers and upon being referred to Mrs. Duke, engaged her in a discussion which attracted the husband's attention.

The former governor was told in clear terms that they have orders from above to stop the ceremony and would want him to follow them to the state headquarters of the force to answer some questions. The drama between him and the police took place beside the Murtala Mohammed Highway, where the hospital is located.

There were two version of Duke's arrest. One version has it that the police were acting on a court order stopping the ceremony from taking place while the other said the law enforcement agents swooped on the venue because it was an unauthorized political meeting summoned by Mr Duke.

Responding to you is a complete waste of time and am sad that am doing this. Eman mi ke obio efik means i was born in Calabar and thats what i said in my reply to another of your tribalistic friend (am sure you are the same person). So now u blame the failure of Tinapa on Imoke lol. All u succeeded in doing was expose yourself as an ethinic bigoted lady, constantly mentioning Atam lol. Have you noticed you didnt deny any of my points lol instead you are asking a foolish question, what's the fight with the properties(sic) meaning you know he's guilty but you are angry that it's been mention.

Finally regarding if i understand good english, please look at my posts and look at yours then you would know we are not in the same league (english is not my mother's tongue so normally i don't care but please it's are you a Cross Riverian not are you a Cross River lol lol poom to your face you )

@ Chibu I don't know where to start with u. Are u a Cross River or uta_afang in Cross River? First of all Eman mi ke obio Efik means my folks are in Calabar not that I'm in Calabar. Do you understand GOOD english or should use your atam language? Tinapa for your info is not a failure, it was only handed over to a failure your atam man who did not know what to do with it. Small Marina Resort under his nose he can't handle. It's unfortunate there was not enough time for DD to kick start and stabilise Tinapa before handing it over to your atam man. What's the fight with properties NRC, Metro etc. Isn't it obvious that your man has no idea of his? Why are u not talking about the celebrated Calabar Carnival, the cleanliness culture DD has caused Cross Riverians to imbibe admists other laudable projects Donald has achieved in CRS. It's a shame on u and your atam people. Go ahead and deny you are not atam. You talk about Dansuki, Ekpo Okon and the rest, what do u know about leadership? These people doff their caps for the same man you re castigating irrespective of their differences. My dear try hard as you may you can't stop Don's shine. He's way outta you peeps' league. He's the Don, he's a genius.

Tinapa is an absolute failure. The only thing that works there apart from the water parks,is T-Mart, Donald's store. Right now, there is still no electricity in Tinapa.

Donald Duke totally impoverished this state. The financial situation in Cross River State is dire. A huge chunk of the state allocation is channeled towards paying off Donald's debts. The pineapple project was a total scam.

Chib4u was spot on in everything he said. What that man has done to our state is really criminal and I shudder to think of him let loose on Nigeria as a whole.

I hope Nigerians can look beyond a handsome face, charm and eloquence.

My brother the loan itself is more than N12 Billion(ie just union bank, there are other banks as well), why focus on Tinapa? What about my other points? As i said earlier me no get wahala with DD but na him hypocrisy de pain me. That guy na normal and typical naija politician, dont be decieved by this new obama like campaign wey him wan/de start. I know you cant deny the fact that tinapa has been a failure. Apart from the the slash in revenue, the projected revenue to be generated at tinapa has not been achieved and we all doubted it from the inception. My brother if you have lived in Cali, you will understand. WHY BUILD A SO CALLED FREE TRADE ZONE WHEN WE HAVE EPZ CALABAR ALREADY?(sorry i know i have just broken the etiquette of our nairaland by typing in capital letters but DD messed up big time). Let's talk about my other points too. You need to go to Tinapa and see how empty and quite it is. Its a complete white elephant.

Thank you for your response it is what I expected.

Chibu4u - if you are truly from Cross River, what you have written about Tinapa is a pity. As we say 'nah who know man dey kill am'

Why have you completely ignored:

- The loss of 76 oil wells and over N21 Billion in revenue this year alone. That would have meant this loan of N12 Billion could have been paid.

Why would the FG halve Cross Rivers revenue from N2.2 billion to N1 billion per month?

Why would the FG cede Bakassi to Cameroon?

Why would FG not allow Tinapa to flourish by removing the red tape?

What exactly would you like to know? The fact remains that Donald Duke is the best presidential material available in this country today and naturally political minions feel threatened by his towering credentials. Already you can see some delinquents trying to dis-credit the man by twisting facts to buttress their delusions.

Sapele guy Tinapa is not debt free. They took different loans from different banks. Union bank recently went to court seeking to wind up the place read this http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201003161142992 . Even in todays papers Imoke was still talking about the debt http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/News/Metro/Politics/5574459-146/cross_river_gets_compensation_for_oil.csp . Sanusi was only talking about the laons from first bank and UBA(If i repay Mr A does that mean by i don't owe MR C AND D?). Now regarding my other points, you dont live in calabar so you probably woundn't know but at least the NRC building is there for everybody to see, Axari Hotel(former SDP own by his friend a serving commisioner during his tenure is there to see, his well publicized court battle with the chief judge over the N555m naira property in Ikoyi is there for you to see and i provided links for that as well.

Chibu4U - Tinapa is debt free. Please present your evidence to prove that Cross River is in debt because of Tinapa. http://allafrica.com/stories/200909080641.html

Imoke’s Government Probes Donald Duke .

Sunday, 30 May 2010 00:00 From Anietie Akpan, Calabar News - National .User Rating: / 0

PoorBest

A subtle probing of the regime of the former Governor of Cross River State, Mr. Donald Duke, by the state government may have commenced following public outcry over the acquisition of public and government property by his administration.

Already, some persons have gone to court to restrain beneficiaries of such property from using them as they want the government to cause Duke and others to account for all the public and government property acquired by his regime for an overriding public interest.

Some of the property include the former National Republican Convention (NRC) party building, which now houses the Calabar Women and Children Hospital (CWCH), the Cross River Liaison Building in Lagos, now a private property, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) press centre in Calabar, now a private property, and several others.

Following this development, the state government recently inaugurated a seven-member Land Use and Allocation Committee with Gershom Henshaw as Chairman “to advise the governor on matters concerning the management of land in urban areas of the state; advise the governor on matters connected with the resettlement of persons displaced from their abode through revocation of their rights of occupancy on the ground of overriding public interest and determine disputes that may arise as to the amount of compensation payable for the improvement on land upon revocation”.

Latest in the land and property acquisition crisis in the state and Duke’s government, Justice E. O. Eneji of the Akamkpa Division of the High Court of Cross River State on Friday in Suit No. HK/5/2010 between Mr. James Ebri (Claimant/Applicant) and Child Survival and Development Organization (CS-Don), Dr. Esangbedo, Government of Cross River State, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, and the Commissioner for Lands (Defendants/Respondents) granted an injunction restraining the defendants from commissioning the hospital.

The Judge after hearing the arguments of counsel to the applicant, Mr Ebaye Akonjom said “that an interim order shall and is hereby granted restraining the defendants/respondents from commissioning, inaugurating and opening of the Calabar Women and Children’s Hospital (CWCH) by any person whosoever, scheduled to hold on 28th May, 2010, at the Movie theatre, Calabar Women and Children’s Hospital, Cross River State or any other day pending the determination of the Motion on Notice”.

In a 14-point affidavit, Ebri had argued that the property now housing the Hospital belongs to the Cross River State Government but has been converted to private use.

According to him, “from my enquiries in appropriate offices of government especially, Ministries of Land and Health, I was shocked, embarrassed and outraged to discover that this property is said to belong to faceless persons whose identities have remained unknown and shrouded in inexplicable mystery”.

With the injunction, the police swarmed venue of the event and stopped it half way and in the ensuing drama the wife of former Managing Director of UBA, Mrs. Awele Elumelu rushed and cut the tape to formally commission the centre.

Duke was visibly angered as he was speaking with the policemen who came to invite him for questioning with the Commissioner of Police but all the same he left with them in his Land Cruiser jeep to the State Police command for questioning, which lasted about an hour. But some persons speculated that he was arrested and taken to Abuja.

No government official was present at the ceremony despite the invitation to them, and sources close to The Guardian said the boycott was connected with the frosty relationship between Imoke and Duke, especially with the latter’s alleged plot to scuttle the former’s second term governorship ambition.

Obviously, the relationship between the state government, led by Imoke and Duke, his predecessor, has gone sour as the state government boycotted the commissioning of the Calabar Women and Children Hospital believed to be owned by Duke and his wife, Onari.

The Judge adjourned the hearing on the matter to June 14.

However, Duke, who has been silent on the property issue, dismissed speculations that security agencies stormed the launch venue of Calabar Women and Children Hospital (CWCH), arrested him and whisked him off to Abuja for interrogation, stating that “as I speak, I am in my house; I was never arrested by any security agency for whatever reasons.”

Narrating what transpired at the event last Friday from his home in Calabar, Duke said the hospital launch organised by his wife, Onari, was well underway when armed policemen condoned the venue, brandishing a purported court injunction from an Akamkpa High Court to stop the ceremony.

He said since he knew that an Akamkpa High Court had no jurisdiction over Calabar Municipality, he disregarded the purported court injunction and proceeded with the ceremony, adding that he yielded to entreaties from an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) who invited him after the event had ended to see the State Commissioner of Police with whom he had an enlightened discussion on the circumstances surrounding the disruption after which he departed to his abode.

Spokesman to Duke, Mr. Joseph Ushigiale, said Imoke “recently cancelled the conferment of an honorary doctorate degree by the state university (CRUTECH) on his predecessor, Donald Duke last weekend further deepening the already frosty relationship between them”.

But Chief Press Secretary to Imoke, Mr Pat Ugbe, said CRUTECH has not awarded any doctorate degree yet and the first post graduate student have just been registered and would be wrong for the school to start awarding honorary doctorate when it was not qualified to do so for now until the school graduates its first post graduate student in next two to three years.

It was gathered that Duke’s recent public resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took the party in the state by surprise and drew the angst of its hierarchy which quickly responded with a damning condemnation of their erstwhile leader, describing him as an ingrate.

Duke took time to answer d question himself on 123next

I have followed the genuine comments that have flowed from this story. Everyone who has commented here is excercising his/her fundamental rights to free speech and I don't begrudge that. But let me be put on record about what transpired yesterday in Calabar. I was NOT ARRESTED BY THE POLICE in Calabar as this story has portrayed. I am not above the law, the police came to enforce an exparte order issued by an Akamkpa High Court. As a lawyer, even a layman knows that Calabar Municipality where the ceremony held is beyond the Akamkpa court's jurisdiction. Regardless, I had to out of courtesy and as a law abiding citizen opted to step in on behalf of my wife, Onari, and clarify issues with the Commissioner of Police and this didn't last more than about 20 minutes and I was back to venue. Please also note that, the health facility is being promoted by my dear wife Onari, so how could I have been arrested? If anyone needed be arrested, it is my wife not me and commonsense or logic should have cautioned the reporter not to insinuate as he did. I was a guest at the occassion, ditto other local and international dignitaries, including officials from the World Health Organisation(WHO), Shell, Mikano, Wampco, NAIRDA, Flour Mills etc. As the reporter rightly pointed out, the police first accosted my wife and then I stepped in to intervene. The reason being that, my wife, as host would not have abandoned the ceremony to accompany the police to see the CP; that would have further jeopardised the flow of the event and embarrassed her guests and ruined everything. So for stepping forward, is it now fair to interprete it that I was arrested? Now to the real issues. I would want us, especially those resident in our country to go round the council areas nationwide, assess and tell me the state of the NRC/SDP party secretariats today. When my wife mooted the idea of this project, a place to host it became a major challenge. Although the current building was abandoned and in a parlous state of disuse just like others nationwide, rather than appropriating the property, it was decided that a 25 year lease be taken on the property. What it means is that, regardless of what you invest there, the property remains that of the state. What is the benefit of this project? It is verifiable that through the help of the US Embassy, the hospital has been able to attract support from the world acclaimed Susan Koerman bosom Cancer Foundation and other international donors. In Nigeria, the project is being supported by SHELL, FLOUR MILLS,UBA, WAMPCO, NETCOM,AP,NOKIA,TRIQUEST,DELTA AFRIK, MONI PULO, JAGAL, EXXON MOBIL, ACERGY, FIRST BANK, SHLUMBERGER, MIKANO, CHEVRON and SAHARA. It has NOT benefitted from state funds under my watch. So far, in the entire South South, its facilities are unequalled. And as a not-for-profit non-governmental organisation, majority of its services targetted at women and children are absolutely free. Where does this leave us? Do I hold the state government responsible? No. But let me be clear here, this facility is not out to compete with whatever health programmes or facilities the state government is contemplating, if anything, it is to complement those efforts. I hope and pray that even with this confusion, we can still find a way, work together to benefit our people. Thank you. Donald

it's all battle for 2011, since his resignation from pdp, the pdp dons in cross river state are jittery that should he(donald duke) realigns himself with another political party in the state, duke's teeming suoporters will flock en mass to his new political ideology and it might cost the pdp in the state in the next upcoming elections.

it is an obvious fact that liyel imoke, the present governor of cross river state and his predecessor duke are no longer in good terms. So what happened ,is just the beginning of more conflicts to come.

anyhow, i support duke all the way.

Good day my dear people of Nigeria. It is sad to see how people are suffering in this "great" nation.

I don't understand why there are too many old people in government when there are young intelligent Nigerians that can move the country forward.

I have been out of the country for 20 years only to come back and see thesame set of people in government.

Old people old sense , same way of thinking ,same way of doing things, no progress. too bad

Do not support anyone that have been in government before, they must move on and let young intelligent Nigerians to rule the country.

The problem is most of his supporters have never lived in Calabar. They are seriously blinded by their desire to see a well spoken handsome or beautiful Nigerian president address the UN or giving a titivating interview on CNN. The said hospital is a private hospital with the sole aim of making profit. The building where the hospital is built was once the NRC's state secretariat(a state government property). He sold it to his wife and actually did the same to SDP's secretariat which he sold to one of his fronts and former commisioner for lands and survey Ndem and the place is now called Axari Hotels.

Sorry for going off topic but i challenge anyone that lives or lived in calabar to denie these points that am about to make

Donald Duke recent cry for electoral reforms etc makes me laugh; Donald Duke masterminded and executed one of the biggest electoral malpractices ever witnessed in the state. To call the 2003 general elections an election is an understatement and a joke. This is a man who did not spare any power as an incumbent governor to crush and wipe out the opposition. Little wonder how a state where ANPP produced twelve State House of Assembly members out of twenty five, three members of the House of Representative, one senator and several Local Government Council Chairmen/woman at the 1999 elections ended up not winning even a single ward election during the 2003 general elections. His supporters have also forgotten his constant display of power against the opposition. With the constant suspension and arrest of ANPP state house members, Orok Duke (not saying he’s a saint) for aligning with the few remaining ANPP members that refuse to decamp or his onslaught on ANPP LGA Chairmen that refuse to decamp e.g. Daniel Asuquo (Dansuki), Eyo Okon Eyo etc. His personal fiat against the/any opposition would surely be established if he ever becomes president. This is the same Donald Duke that is talking of reforms.

Tinapa. Yes Tinapa which Donald Duke prides himself as the architect is nothing but a big failure. A project that was set to fail from the onset, a project that has left the state in a huge debt. Lamenting over the precarious financial situation of the state, Imoke said, “We have been supplementing the shortfall because we had to fall back on our savings. But that has dried up. Cross River is insolvent. We carry a huge debt burden, ”

Tinapa was built on exaggerated and wrong-footed feasibility study report. I still can’t get around the idea of building a business resort/free trade zone when we have an Export Processing Free Trade Zone in Calabar already. Now following the failure of projections, it has become extremely difficult for the state to fulfil its basic functions for the people of the state, as interests are chopped off from its monthly allocations by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), thus whittling its revenue base. This is an example of a bad administrator. Talking about the leisure side of Tinapa, what impact has it made on the life of the common man? How many nollywood movies have been shot from that studio? I don’t buy the idea of using the state’s money in building a place for the rich and the above average citizens. With the amount of money and debt involved this particular project is a failure and it was done in such hurry-scurry because of his dictatorial rule in the state.

Just realise that this is getting long so I will just leave the “Donald Duke is our Obama/best candidate for 2011” with a few questions.

At this time in our country, do we need a man known for his tribalism as the president of our country? Judging from his sacking of all non indigenes from the state civil service. Am pretty sure we know what the constitution says about people that were born or have lived in a certain area over a period of time. Can that act be carried out in any developed country without the president, governor or mayor been called Racist etc.? I wonder how some of you will feel if you lost your job of ten or even twenty years just because of your nationality, colour, religion or tribe.

Do we need a nepotist as our president or do we pretend we can’t remember who handled the contracts for the Calabar Carnivals?

What happened to the NRC state secretariat (State owned building) on Murtala Highway? I hope you know it has been turned into a private hospital (not charity) own and manage by his wife, Onari. If this isn’t nepotism then I don’t know what it is and he swore to an oath never to practice it. Before his so call super intelligent supporters support this action with sentiments like “It’s a public- private partnership” The state government (public) has denied and has no records of such partnership and before you say it’s because of bad politics, Duke should show the world the MOU between the two parties. Even if it’s a public-private partnership, why should the private part be his wife or a member of his family? How am I not sure that he won’t privatize NNPC and sell it to his wife if he becomes president.

Who bought Metropolitan Hotels Ltd (Calabar and Ikom) for N200 million even when General Ukpo had offered to buy the same property at N600 million? The same metro that was renovated for Nigeria 1999 at N400 million. Metro was valued at N2 billion. If Metro was sold at a loss of N2 billion in public funds, what was the rationale behind the decision? Is government not constituted to safeguard the overall interests of the people? In what way does the act of foregoing 2 billion naira amount to safeguarding the overall interests of the people? Does the act of foregoing N2 billion of public money amount to transparency in the conduct of public business?

Where did Donald Duke get the money to build ADMIRALTY TOWERS (three sets of high rise luxury flats) located at No. 9A Gerard Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.? Where did he get N555 million to buy the property at No 1 Temple Road, Ikoyi Lagos? Am sure the above mentioned groups have forgotten the court cases between him and the occupier who was a Chief Judge. Check this archives from Thisday and Punch http://odili.net/news/source/2008/apr/15/413.html or http://odili.net/news/source/2008/apr/30/221.html .Based on his official salary and entitlements, a governor shouldn’t be able to afford that unless he has obviously done the obvious.

Basically all am trying to say is, the man is just a normal politician, I don’t think there’s a difference between a small thief and a big thief. He’s not our political messiah. Sorry a leader cannot be excused for too many slips, even a slip in a true democracy has damaged a lot of politicians. The above mentioned groups tries/ keep trying to sell him as an epochal dawn in our national politics, as for me Donald Etim Duke is a normal Nigerian Politician. We have a messiah out there but is definitely not Donald.

I write to update you on recent developments that many of you may already be aware of and explain what they hold in store.  You will likely have heard that I have formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party of Nigeria.

The idea of representation is at the heart of this quest for redemption, as it is the heart of democracy.  Over the past fifty years, we have failed to reach the places we were entitled to at independence.

On our fiftieth anniversary of self-government, we haven’t even come close to achieving our true potential. I certainly wish to be an embodiment of our collective hopes for Nigeria.

To achieve this, we must sensitise, mobilise and encourage first time voters, and an apathetic and disillusioned electorate.  We must assure them that this time we can make the change needed to move our country forward.

Accordingly, we are embarking on an extensive nation-wide tour, carrying our message along as we do, on Billboards, print and electronic media, sms and through such other social media as facebook and twitter.

The idea is to reach out to every Nigerian above the age of 18 years in every state of the nation.  We have enlisted a volunteer network of over

5,000 young men and women in all the states of the federation.

No effort is being spared.

The effort to regain the soul of our country will cost our time and resources because the rot is very deep, indeed.

But, let’s face it: this exercise, as conceived, will be expensive.  The huge cost of the exercise would cover travels, logistics, materials, overheads etc.

Some may say it is not our responsibility. But indeed, it is. It is a civic charge to ensure that we have governance at all levels that is truly representative.

I refer you to www.donalddukeorganisation.org,  a forum that will enable us listen and interface with you.  It would also allow you to make contributions and invite others to join the cause - your cause, our cause. Beyond your contributions, spread the word and pass the message on to others.

Your enthusiasm, commitment, participation and donation are the lifeblood of this organisation and effort.  Please give freely of your heart. Failure would be in doing nothing in the face of opportunity.

We shall, throughout this effort, consistently update you on what we receive and how it is spent.  We shall at all times be transparent and accountable.

Let us, together, take our country back and move it forward. It is the right thing to do and the time is now!

Sincerely,

Donald Duke

Indeed. The "do-or-die" politics that Jonathan , regardless of any pretense, is very much a part of . They are all scared of Duke to include Jonathan himself. His chances may not be good , as per incumbent leaders using state apparatus to terrorise opponents , but Duke remains the type of progressive leader even Western nations want for us. Not many of us know that Donald Duke was one of the Africans selected as a monitor for the historic US election that brought Obama to power.

What do you expect from imoke. He squander 18 billion dollars meant to provide electricity for Nigerians, while he enjoys 24 hours electricity even when he is in his official ride. Is it because he can not performed what donald did. Why are you harassing him because his wife built a standard hospital that imoke has not been able to even designed on paper talkless of even building. Can imoke tell us where he went for medical treatment when he sustained injury in an accident, was he not rushed abroad for medical treatment, he now want to stop somebody that want to build a good hospital for the common people. May the GOD of the common people attack him with all his arsenal. May he not be successful in his future endeavours. Ole. Where is the electricity you promised us.

Bibi King, i agree with your views. Put simply, it is the usual abuse of office by people in power. He was their darling years back and untouchable too. Now that he has left the PDP with all the secrets he shared with them in the good old days and speaking openly about his resentments of the pdp, he is a threat and must be silenced before he gets too big for them to control. I agree they must have concocted lies and flashed a "shut up and put up or die if you won't file" in his face.

I am not sure where his wife got the money to build the hospital but i cannot condemn her because she recognised that instead of using any stolen government money to buy gold and jet off on holidays, it is best to give back to the people that need it. She is not like many who would rather build hospitals in South African and help their economy when we are dying. at least people will be treated and employment will be created for the unemployed. They should watch their back though. These people are desperate and lethal in every respect. That said if he needs legal protection i know a very young hungry, angry but very intelligent Nigerian lawyer who wants to take the government for any reason and i will connect them. She is very intelligent but wholly ignorant when she thinks that someones right is under threat or has been eroded. these are difficult and dangerous times and those who are surrounded by enemies must guard their lives. long live Nigeria and love to all of you who give me reason to feel that there is need to smile every time i read your postings.

Precisely . Add charisma and panache to the list as well. Duke has been ruffling feathers to no end of late . I doubt he has anything to hide because he is acting more like Gani Fawenhinmi of late . Speaking vehemently against the PDP and Jonathan (more or less calling him a coward) during the recent cabal hijack of the Nigerian Presidency means , in Nigeria's where politics of blood and vengeance overrides good governance,  Duke must now pay for his "insolence".

Jonathan is now slowly showing his hands as some of us suspected he would. Mr. Beaf (Jonathan's main propagandist on Nairaland) where you at ? I don't know when Nigerians , including some who are very intelligent , will learn that accidental and/or selected leaders rarely ever make good leaders.

Let your hearts not be troubled citizens of the democratic state of Nigeria. This is merely decree 101 taking its normal course of events. That man is just too handsome and eloquent not to pose a threat to our leader's political ambition, so he has to be dealt with. Do not think the leader is playing o! Why do you think that the gap-toothed ex-general has been silent since? We showed him a file, the same type of file we just showed Onari's husband. The leader is not here to play, there is work to be done and an extra tenure is needed to complete the task.

when i said anti-corruption crusade, i didn't mean Jonathan's anti corruption crusade (2011 mission to aso rock).

Lets look at it this way, we want change, now let me ask you, how would this change come about.

let me guess, when we eventually go to the poll (like June 12) and vote our beloved candidate (that is if he survives the EFCC's initial scare).

My dear, why did you think the former president died on the seat (with all the rumoured spiritual protection for our leaders). are u willing to go on the street to ensure your rights (like the red shirt for months)

My best bet is that sumone among these thief's would do the bidding by hanging all his political enemy (we all agree that they are criminals) and then when the time is right, the right person would get to the presidency (i have not yet figured how yet) but my guess is, this is what i forsee happening.

Duke Denies Being Arrested

By Yemi adebowale in Lagos and Ernest Chinwo in Calabar, 05.29.2010

Former Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke has dismissed speculations that security agencies stormed the launch venue of Calabar Women and Children Hospital, arrested him and took him to Abuja for interrogation, stating that “as I speak, I am in my house; I was never arrested by any security agency for whatever reasons.”

Narrating what transpired at the event yesterday from his home in Calabar, Duke said the hospital launch organised by his wife, Onari was well underway when armed policemen condoned the venue brandishing a purported court injunction from an Akamkpa High Court to stop the ceremony.

He said since he knew that an Akamkpa High Court had no jurisdiction over Calabar Municipality, he disregarded the purported court injunction and proceeded with the ceremony, adding that he yielded to entreaties from an Assistant Commissioner of Police who invited him after the event had ended to see the state Commissioner of Police with whom he had an enlightened discussion on the circumstances surrounding the disruption after which he left for to his abode.

The court injunction was issued by Justice Maurice Eneji of Akamkpa High Court in Suit No., HK5/2010 instituted by Mr. James Ebri to stop the launch of the hospital organised by the Child Survival Organisation of Nigeria promoted by Mrs. Onari Duke.

The storming of the event by agents alleged to have been sponsored reportedly embarrassed local and international donors and invitees including officials from the World Health Organisation, United Bank for Africa, Flour Mills, Shell, Wampco, Chevron, Exxon-Mobil, NAIRDA, Mikano who waited patiently to the end of the ceremony despite the attempt to disrupt the event with a spurious court injunction.

There is no concrete evidence to suggest the state government had a band in the plot. But Governor Liyel Imoke’s reported cancellation of a planned conferment of an honourary doctorate degree by the state university on his predecessor, Duke last weekend has further swelled speculation of a frosty relationship.

Commenting on the incident, consultant and former commissioner for Health in Cross River State, Dr. Joseph Ana said the project is for the betterment of the people of Cross River State and it is going to improve healthcare delivery in the state.

He said the project is not just an ordinary hospital but a specialist hospital with wired internet facilities that will capture the patients once they step into the hospital till they are diagnosed.

According to him, “Once a patient is diagnosed, the doctors here have access to other specialist hospitals and institutions affiliated to them around the world. This will afford the doctors exchange ideas and information with a view to finding medical solution for the patient.”

This has nothing to do with anticorruption. This is the silly, pathetic and outright crazy behavior of successive governments in Nigeria using state apparatus to settle political points. The zombies must do what they are told as Fela sang. We need a complete overhaul of our laws, but more importantly a movement to demand every single right that belongs to us as individuals - by force if it must be. We have zero checks and balances, power flows from one source and one source only.
