Odumegwu Ojukwo biography
This man was known as a president of Biafra. Ojukwo was born in 1933. His full name was Chukwuemeka "Emeka" Odumegwu-Ojukwu. He grew up in north of country in Zungeru. He started his school education in Lagos. A bit later, at age of 13, Ojukwo was sent to the UK. He obtained master's degree there and in 1956 came back to Nigeria.
After his coming back, Ojukwo joined civil service. However, after several months, he decided that the military one was better for him. He was a recruit first, but his education gave him lots of opportunities for promotion. He served in UN peacekeeping force, and after this, he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel.
After the military coup, Aguiyi-Ironsi – a person who became head of state, appointed him as Eastern Region Military Governor. However, the counter coup developed, which finally led to Civil War.

Ojukwo wanted to stop genocide, that’s why when no agreement was reached, he announced Eastern Nigeria to be a sovereign state, known as Republic of Biafra (it included Cross River, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Bayelsa, Abia, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers state). The struggle continued for several years, and after there appeared a hole in Biafran front lines. Odumegwu Ojukwo had to leave the state in order to avoid assassination. Soon after this, Biafran soldiers surrendered.
How old is Odumegwu Ojukwu?
If this man would be alive, he would aged 82 by know. He did a lot for Nigeria. Besides Biafra, he also added to the returning of democracy to Nigeria after 1999. He also ran for presidency with his party, called All Progressives Grand Alliance. His was their leader.
Is Ojukwu Odumegwu dead?
He died in November 2011, soon after his birthday. It happened in the UK after his brief illness. Nigerian Army accorded him the highest military accolade and conducted special funeral parade in Abuja on the 27th of February 2012, the day his body was flown back to Nigeria from London before his burial on Friday, the 2nd of March.
