The Nigerian Navy representative explained that its decision to employ air power to take to pieces vandals camps in the Arepo creeks took place because of certain difficulties to enter the terrain on both land and water.

What happened in Arepo?

As a result of Military bombardment of Iroko creeks in Arepo area of (Ogun State) many people died. This region was suspected to be inhabited by aggressive militants. These are gunmen, suspected to be militants, stormed Isawo area of Ikorodu, and abducted a man recognized as Hyginius. The air attack was carried out by the Military and police. Concerning civilians living around the creeks for now it is not clear whether any of them suffered.

The operation itself lasted for half an hour. According to some unknown report were over thirty-five houses were destroyed. Some helicopters were sighted hovering around the creeks at about 5.38 p.m., followed by irregular shots, which bothered the militants. Some of them have hid in the river. Residents of Elepete district scampered for safety, because they actually thought it had been another assault by militants.

Police sources stated it was a combined operation. The helicopters were of the Air Force, while personnel of the three forces, comprising the Army Navy and Air Force and Police were on board the boats that combed the creeks. According to another source the militants were in charge for the attacks on residents at Elepete and Igbolomu districts.

How many people were killed?

A local resident told journalists what really happened. When they heard the gunshots, they took cover. However when they contacted the security men, they told them that they had been in charge. They were also told that several persons were killed, but nobody could tell the correct number. According to an anonymous senior army officer it was too early to speak on such sensitive topic. He also added that there was no reason to fear.

At the same time, Ahmed Illiyasu, new Ogun Police Commissioner, had given a hint of what lay ahead when he threatened a fight with criminals and militants in this state. Ahmed Illiyasu told that the command had already made strategic deployment of policemen to the affected districts in order to drive out the militants. He also explained that militants were hooligans and, therefore, very detailed report had already been studied on them. He as well stated that more than a few operations would be carried out. This important process has started already. “We would like to move up the safety to the next level. We wish to make our country safer and more protected than ever before”, - explained the commissioner.

According to Brig-General Rabe Abubakar, Director of Defense Information what happened was that the military and security agencies in a joint operation did their best wipe out pipeline vandals and oil criminals bent on sabotaging Nigerian economic assets. He also added that there was no way the military could have bombed the area because of the ecological harm that would as well be inflicted in this region.

Abubakar also added that Arepo region was of critical significance to Nigeria and the infrastructure on ground had cost the nation huge resources.

This joint military operation was named “Awatse”. Thus, the militants who built a colony in the creeks tried to drive back the Military but were besieged by the aerial attack. Some of them were told to use a GPMG weapon in two wooden boats, attempting to fire at the Military. However they were forced to throw away their weapons due to the sporadic shots.

According to Admiral Ferguson Bobai now it is too early to determine the amount of casualty because for now nobody has the possibility to enter the terrain.
