Would Goodluck Jonathan Win A Free & Fair Election?

With the state of affairs, it has become no more news that President Jonathan will run for 2011 election for presidency. The president has also preached so much about a free and fair election where "EVERY VOTE COUNTS".

With all the speculations about the power of incumbency aside, do you think on a good day, Dr. Jonathan would win his election as the president come 2011?

Lets enjoy your views!

To me I dont see the correctness of this statement. I remember in this Forum when some people werew arguing that Akunyili should not become the INEC chair because she has political interest, she was of PDP. The arguement was that the INEC chair should be neutral. Does this same thinking not come to play about this selection? being elected means that this person is also political or atleast evolves from a party.

To me, Judges making the appointment is ideal

I shouldn't look @ today, oh i should think of tomorrow right? How do we get to tomorrow? How do we put Nigeria on the path of true democracy when those who are unfortunately saddled with that responsibility are not ready to change?

OK i agree that the Judiciary is not bereft of corruption (which organ of the Government is anyway?), but have u really thought of what it would be like having a relatively vibrant and honest legislature compared with the Executive? We are in a logjam in Nigeria and only a miracle can save the Country's teething democracy. We can only hope that somehow Prof Jega would conduct free and fair polls come 2011 which would usher in a new era for Nigeria's democracy and indeed hope for the common man.

After that, we can now start talking about genuine and altruistic reforms in our electoral system and indeed the constitution as a whole, since our representatives would have been truly elected by the electorate, and not selected by a few Godfathers in the ruling class. Oh another option is a revolution: like Shakespeare said, "lets kill all the lawyers". Only that in our case, "lets kill the ruling class that have been holding Nigeria hostage for the past couple of decades!"

A free and fair election is not possible in nigeria at this time, wait for a century.

You still dont get it. You are looking at the NASS , you have now. Look at it from future NASS. Dont look at today.

You can not allow unelected Judge to make decision in democracy. When George bush/Gore case. American were upset because unelected people had to make the decision.

If a Judge want to take that decision, he should join politics. It is wrong. This is the way democracy is run over here. Judges can not take that decision. You talk about bribe, you know nigeria judge collect bribe. It was a Nigeria judge justice tobi, who wrote the constitution we are all talking about. Go and check some of the nigeria judges they are richer than you think. They have millions of dollars, want to know how. Egunje or bribe.

I think it would serve you well to check out my post: i never said anything about GEJ being the face of Nigeria. As a matter of fact, i only choose to address one of the many issues you raised in your post, which is the issue of the appointment of INEC Chair.

Now, do you care to tell me where and when you did that opinion poll which shows that 90% of Nigerians agree with you? Also which NASS-are you talking about? Agreed - there are some substance in your argument, but Nigeria's NASS is composed of a bunch of idiots (a good percentage of them) ,who are only preoccupied with how to allocate a large chunk of Nigeria's revenue to themselves.

Do you know how much a Nigerian Senator earns (aside juicy contracts they award to themselves and kickbacks they collect from government contractors and heads of government parastatals when they go for their phantom oversight functions ), 42 million naira!. And those dishonourable members of the house of (mis)representatives collect just a little less. And we they have nothing to show for it.

What i'm driving at is that NASS lack the moral capacity as well as the political will to take such tremendous decision as appointing the INEC Chair and members. In any instance, they will definitely appoint someone more corrupt than IWU to rig their way back to power.

Look you, You dont make laws just because of Jonathan, you make laws because other people are going to be president. What if Jonathan was a northerner, you , I know you would shout the power most be with NASS. because Jonathan is a southerner does not mean you have to give him that power.

The different between us and the west is they make principle not for person by for all.

We worship men in nigeria. We are Asss kisser, sorry for my word. When someone because president, he want to be right all the time. And want to be worshipped like a god and does not want to be critic. Everyday I see the prime minister of canada get shouted on. People tell him to sit down steven Harper on live television. Everyday they call steve harper names and insult him on live television. Because they dont worship men. People in parliament dont care if Steve harper is prime minister. They shout at him. Jean chretien the former prime minister, was know for fighting back , they gave him so much problem.

You can see the british prime minister resign because they change thier principle from worshipping men. We need to change our principle. You cant agree with Jonathan when he is wrong.  You priase him when he is right and rebuke him when he is wrong. You cant ever talk against a nigeria pastor who did wrong in nigeria.because nigerian are men worshipper and asss kissers. We need to change to live a bette generation for nigerian.

We must put the people of nigeria over a nation call nigeria or the president. The people are more important than the nation or the president. Without a people , there is no nation. that what we have forgotten in nigeria. we put the nation of nigeria or president above the people. that is wrong. total wrong. the nation of nigeria or president is less important than the people of nigeria.

We have to disagree to agree.

Homonide ,You make me laugh about the new face of Nigeria. You can not have an old wine in new bottle , it is still old wine.

Uwais report was about ethnocracy. A form of democracy reject all over, it was not about true democracy.

Nigeria is not the USA.  Nigeria is unique because of the many ethnics group and what they can do in term violent.

You can not have absolute power in the hand of one man. He would appoint people he like to NJC and you do not want unelected judges determining the faith of people in election. Their vote should count. You want elected member of the house to take that decision. They pay judges in Nigeria bribe.

Look when I said I know banigo. You can go and ask Jonathan what the family is to him. It means alot of contract for me in Nigeria. Ask any nigeria. To be honest with you people think I most be silly for not going back and take my own part of the national cake. It is automatic licence for oil drilling anywhere I want. If you know nigeria.

But I am different person. I see life differently. I believe we can make the life of our people better. I would not destroy whenI know I can build them to become better people.

You cant give the President that power in nigeria. It should lay in the national assembly. Most nigerian would tell you so. over  90% of nigerian agree with me.

Look you I have nothing against a person but the principle. The principle that some would be enjoying and make others suffer for thier personal greedy. I dont agree with.

NASS assembly is right. The president should not pick INEC members. It is not fair to other parties.  Democracy is about been fair. If you want a bias system where the president pick the INEC member let us return back to the military. It was the military that made that mistake for putting it in the constitution. We should correct the mistake and not trying to take advantage of the mistake for personal interest.

You make me laugh about the new face of Nigeria. You can not have a old wine in new bottle , it is still old wine.  Look I dont care for people in government, I care for the people of nigerian, either he is hausa or igbo or yorubas or ijaw .  I understand the difference between substance and symbol.   My loyality is more to the people of nigeria than the nation of nigeria.

My loyality lies to the people of nigeria and not to the nation or the president. The people of Nigeria are greater than the nation of nigeria or the president of nigeria, it takes people to make a nation and not a nation to make a people.   Get that into your head. You have lost focus. I dont worship fellow men like me.

There's great Hope for Nigeria. Nigeria is Blessed! Any selfless and patrotic Nigerian including Northerners will back Jonathan. God is with him, Jonathan despite the ugly stories associated with his political party. Like I said before that "simply looking at this thread poll votes on the same, you will see that he is already winning it FREE and FAIR."

@BecomeO ----One of GJ reform which is Power and dear to Nigerians

Jonathan Orders Power Sector Reforms Fast-tracked

• PHCN’s power generation hits 3,760mw • UAE firm plans 230mw power station

From Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja, 06.07.2010

Ministry of Power yesterday said President Goodluck Jonathan, has directed it to commence full implementation of the Power sector Reform Act in order to create room for private sector participation and efficient service delivery to Nigerians.

The president's charge came just as the average national power generation by the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) hovered at 3,760 megawatts (Mw) with an off-peak of 3,250mw as at last Friday,

THISDAY checks gathered that Shell Afam is yet to come up fully, contributing 345mw against expected 650mw. Some units in Kainji and Shiroro hydro power stations are down thereby drawing down on available generation capacity.

Minister of State for Power, Nuhu Somo Wya in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Yakubu Lawal yesterday, said the President has given the ministry a fresh mandate to fast-track the reform process and break all barriers that would prevent private sector players coming to invest in the sector.

The statement quoted the minister as having said at the weekend while receiving a group of foreign investors from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), who made presentation on their planned participation in the sector, said the mandate is to the effect that the Electric Power Sector Reform (EPSR) Act of 2005 be fully implemented. "President has given mandate to commence the reform process and break all barriers that would prevent private sector players coming to invest in the sector".

“I have clear mandate of Mr. President to break all bottlenecks to private investor’s participation in the power sector .We are ready to encourage you and we will create the enabling environment for you to actively invest in the sector. Our doors are open to all genuine investors ”he said.

Wya explained that that based on the President's directives, the Ministry will be commencing full reform of the sector in order to encourage the inflow of the much needed investment for the sector.

The partial implementation of this Act before now had led to the establishment of Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and unbundling of Power Holding Company of Nigeria(PHCN) into 18 successor companies as follows,Generation-6,Transmission-1 and Distribution-11 respectively

According to Wya, it has become obvious that government alone cannot provide the required investment that would drive the sector for the benefit of all Nigerians, adding that government is open to anybody who has the resources and ready to invest in the sector to come on board.

Wya explained that though most of the power stations in the country are thermal or gas fired based, Nigeria still needs more thermal or gas powered plants adding that investors could easily diversify into other alternative power generation opportunities that exist in the country.

The minister directed the officials of the visiting firm-Energy Trading Group FZC of UAE to meet with the relevant agencies within the Power sector for proper guidelines for investing in the sector urging them to also look at the model on Power Purchase Agreement(PPA) developed by NERC with a view to help them design a sound business plan that will conform with the practice in Nigeria.

He also asked them to meet with NERC officials with a view to obtaining the guidelines for licensing companies that want to operate or do business in the sector noting that relevant committees within the Ministry of Power directly concern with issues on Independent Power Projects (IPP) would also be able to help them fast tract their investment plans in line with the existing guidelines.

The Director of Business Development of ETG, Mr.Mike McCafferty, in his Presentation, said ETG Power is seeking to establish an Independent Power Project with a frame 9 Power plant in simple cycle operation as phase 1 of the project to be delivered within 12 months to commercial operations.

He explained that that phase 2 of the project will incorporate combine cycle operation and that the commissioning of phase II can be delivered within twelve months after commercial operation of phase I, which he said could give 230Megawatts(MW) of electricity to Nigerians.

He said the company has over 33 years of working experience in both Power as well as oil and gas industry across major continent of the world.

@BecomerichO

I have been reading your several posts with repetition of GJ not doing reform. I think U re only playing a pre-emptive role and not being object in your analysis.

What do you say about GJ actions in the followings:

1)Sending Uwais report to NASS unedited

2)Removal of former INEC chair after end of tenure

3)Sponsoring a bill to create Election Offenders Commission

4)Upon discovering NASS do not support d dragging of NJC in appointment of INEC swiftly moved to invove human right group, civil society in picking Prof. Jega dat even other party govs like Adam Oshiomole commended his effort

He could have picked a candidate without anybody input

5)The Mgt shake up in NNPC that has seen people from the east and North East like Adamawa buying fuel for N65 pump price for the first time in the history bridging fuel has been 100% successful

6)The various decision been made in respect of availability of gas and increase the local cost price to boost electricity

7)Appointing of PAC chairman TY Danjuma, VP Namadi Sambo and now Nwodo against strong critici of OBJ

We need to know that Nigeria is made up of the elite, the moderately educated, the less educated and ofcause, the non-educated. All these who are 18 and above and are not disenfranchised have both the right and obligation to vote. Now I see a Nigerian where people look at what this guy is able to achieve within a short period of time and what leader of the past achieved within a longer time.

Think about this: rumous and reliable infor can be obtained at the bar where ordinary people go to drink. If we think about the Yoruba or the north not voting or voting Jonathan, in my mind, we are just talking about people like you and I who can analyse politics at Nairaland because we can do so; we are talking about people who can analyse politics on TV, Radio, Papers, wherever. All these because we are either fully educated or belong to the group that know. But what about the great majority who belong to the class we can call never knows? This group make up the largest population and they have the vote. These people would believe on what they see and not mostly what they hear or knew before. this is the group that MUST vote jonathan if allowed to exercise their right under free and fair election. This is the group that believes that the gain they'll make for voting is better life and improved education system for their children. This group has the vote.

So under a free and fair setting, GJ will not only have the majority vote but also have more desciples than enemies so long as the good work flows.

The banigo i know, we all slept under the same roof with others , while young. eat together with others.

Look jonathan need to find out , how difficult it was to fight june 12. If the capital was in lagos , abiola would have become president.

Now if they say he lost the election.  And ask him to pack his load out of Aso rock, what would jonathan do. He go carry blow. and throw blow on them inside aso rock. Jonathan would say" I no go comot for this place. na my niger delta money them take build aso rock. Make una northerner come inside aso rock. I go finish una with blow, i be ijaw man" . They would kick him out and his load. who dey abuja to help him. nobody.

How can one man inside aso rock fight all northerner around inside aso rock.  When they tell him he lost, he carry him load and go yenagoa . Na wetin go happen for him, if he does not do reform,  I like lokoja, well plan see .

I wish there was a straight YES or NO to this question, but there isn't.

First, the only thing that can make Jonathan organize a free and fair election come 2011 is if he decides not to contest. As a matter of fact, that would be an Herculean task considering the fact that the elites and ruling class in Nigeria would do anything to cling to power. So, Jonathan can decide not to contest and write his name in Gold by organizing a free and fair election, or contest in a free and fair election and risk not winning (which i doubt very much, what with Mr do-or-die hanging on his neck).

On the other hand, if he's really bent on winning, then Nigerians should forget about having a free and fair election come 2011.

My only hope is that he takes the path of honour so as to put Nigeria firmly on the path of true democracy.

President Goodluck Jonathan represents the new face of Nigeria. He has in one month brought back international reckoning to Nigeria. He has met virtually everybody necessary in a space of one month, just yesterday, Bill Gates came calling.

It was reported today that Buhari attended the council of state meeting after many years of staying away from the gathering of the highest governing body in Nigeria.

I want to say, we have no choice, lets forget about ethnic sentiment and move Nigeria forward. if President Goodluck Jonathan did not conduct himself well Nigeria would have been divided. If you want the president not to continue in office then you are selfish because he has the right to contest as he has only this chance and the best opportunity to do his best fro Nigerians.

Even if he does not win, I think Nigerians can hold a free and fair election with Jonathan contesting.

He will not only win the election, it will be a landslide victory. The north at the moment has only one popular credible candidate to present that will be acceptable to all Nigerians-Nuhu Ribadu and since he will not be contesting, an election contest b/w Jonathan, IBB, Buhari and Atiku will definitely be in favor of Jonathan.

And let me add that the Middle Belt will overwhelmingly vote for Jonathan if he choose to contest.

No wonder the ruling ones keep holding the country under ransome, becoz they understood many Nigerian brains are filled with that of chicken. After more than one year of Obama as the president, with his credits on Health care reform, recovery from economic slump he inherited, creation of more than 500,000jobs, etc, Americans do not yet consider him as potention candidate for next election. Here we are voting in a man who jst took over office  merely 3months ago for another 4yrs.

Narrow minded Nigerians, is it not wise for us to examine first what he is gonna do within the one year in his hands before placing a whole 4years of Nigerian future in his hands?

If i ask the voters what he has done within these few months that made them think he worth giving more 4years, you will see confusion in them. The problem of Nigerians seems to be their inability to discern their political environment, as such giving themselves hope even from where there is no hope. PDP has shown us they have  got nothing to offer, yet we still believe Jonathan under PDP is gonna make any difference. I will still be here when you people will come back here cursing Jonathan and i will swear for the person, becoz the poor guy is not the problem but the party he found himself and the people around him. Am happy that Donald Duke finally decamped from this evil party. Let me see how Jonathan can win him under free and fair election, though i know nothing like free and fair election is gonna happen under PDP, coz they are evil.

Gani fawehinmi was the one who brought my father land for him , when my dad was abroad.  so you should know i am not young mister.

So let remove the odua state.

Now tell me which state you think, he would win based on the useless rigged nairaland poll.

He would be lucky to get 10 states in nigeria.

Now the election result is out Jonathan won kano state, kastina, sokoto, kebbi, zamfara, borno, yobe, gombe, bauchi, kaduna, bayelsa, jigawa state,

How does that sound to you. They would burn down anything they find in the north.

Ask yourself, why do you think the igbos have not produced the president.  The same silly mistake the igbos have been making he is making.

Jonathan is scared of the northerner.  Lokoja is a wonderful location for a capital. I have been there before.

Look I am not telling lies about the satellite pictures, the north is less populated than us, so they cant fight us. So why is Jonathan scared.

Look he should go and find out when Deji beat up is wife in market place , it means we are ready for war. Why is he scare. That deji  of akure last name is Adesida. My schoolmate is a member of his family, either his cousin or brother. even the head of the ondo state council of oba Oba olagbegi who suspended him is brother bowo brother.  So that should tell you, I am not a young man.

Why is he scared. Do reform. If he does not do reform. He would loss. Take that for me. Even Obasanjo lost. If Obasanjo can not help himself, how can he help you. A tree does not make a forest. No reform, No vote.   You people can vote one million times on nairaland.

Anyone can vote 100 times on nairaland. One person can vote 100 times of nairaland. And the owner of nairaland are bias. I know so. they edit my post. So I know so.

Is it the people of lagos , you denied justice , you want to turn back too and ask for vote or ibadan people or akure people.  Let tell ourself the truth. If Jonathan is my blood brother, this is what I am going to tell him. Seun osewa cant not win Yorubaland for you.

For me, I am not interested in selling myself for  money or contract or my people for money.  If I wanted contract in nigeria. I told you I know some people in government. I would have done so.  But I am telling you the truth. Obasanjo can not send his children to every village and town in Yorubaland to win vote for Jonathan, even obasanjo lost. So you see, yoruba politics is unique. He should not allow anyone to decieve him.

It is Yoruba people that are going to count the vote and declear it. Same people you people want to continue to suffer. OK, i would see if any of you would win a seat. It would look like mirage for you people.

Do reform. That way you have hard copy ready. They would claim 10 trillion voted in the north, if you dont do reform. And one northerner won with 1 billion vote. So now I ask you, were does that put jonathan. On his next flight to bayelsa state to his village. or will he fight them alone in abuja, how many sounterner there abuja to help him out.  I am been honest and treating him if he is my blood brother. I dont want to decieve you people.

I am asking you a question, is it the Yorubas Jonathan have refused to carry out reform when satellite pictures show we are majority that would vote . Or do you think we are happy with the PDP at the moment. Or do you think we are bastard1 who sell how soul for money. Go and find out our history.

We want change. If Jonathan does not make the change before the election, the yoruba vote would go someone where. As long as he refuse, we would have change.

He better know it is Yorubas people who are going to count the vote in Yorubalnad and they would declear him lossing, He should go and ask IBB how Prof Nwosu declear June 1993 and IBB arrested him. Because he is president does not mean shit1 , if we dont want to give him our vote. Look , He has to know , he has no choice than carry out reform. Look, is he going to carry Ijaw people to kano to help him count the vote. ??

Northerner are going to count it and put and declear what ever they want.

So he does not carry out reform. He would be the greatest losser in Nigeria politics. He has nothing to loss. The northerner power house want to be majority , the sultan is a graduate with master degree, he knows the implication of not carry out reform. If Jonathan continue to refuse, the Yorubas would run for president and we would pick a northerner for vice president and Hand over to that Northerner when we make the north majority and give the north 70% of the Oil.

can one man make a forest.

Let our wishes and prayers be that Nigeria will gain his glories and move forward first. hubreality , where,

The yorubas would not vote for Jonathan, if he does not carry out reform based on satellite pictures.

Take that from me. If anybody give Jonathan an assurance that he he would win. They just want to collect contract  from Jonathan.  Even Obasanjo lost in Yorubaland. So do you think Obasanjo who lost in Yorubaland can give Jonathan assurance of winning NO.

I am telling you take it or leave the Yorubas would not vote Jonathan expect he carry out reform.

If Jonathan fair to address our people. Look. PDP would not pick a seat in Yorubaland. PDP have been in power for 12 years? what have the PDP done for the Yoruba people. Let them come out and show us.

Even fashola who just used less than 3 years have many thing to show for it than PDP governor who have spend 8 years in power.  Do you know any PDP governor that have perform more than fashola. name that person.

So give us reason why we need to vote for PDP. I personally have nothing against Jonathan as a person. But the PDP have failed Nigerian. It is 12 years in power people. GSM is 11 years. After GSM  and the stadium in abuja 2000 or so. 10 years after the PDP have not done anything.

No moral person would be thinking of the PDP to retain power. And the Yoruba people are disappointed with the many lies the PDP have told them. The deciet by the PDP is too much. David mark and deputy speakers and thier many lies.

So name the state PDP want to win. The Yorubas would present a candidate too and pick a northerner as vice president. Since Jonathan have refuse to do any form of reform. When we vote for  a Yorubaman in power he would carry out that reform.  And I suggest we make the north majority for thier own go and that Yorubaman would hand over to the North.   Let Jonathan continue to refuse he does not want to correct the injustice against the Yoruba.

We too can have power. We want reform or NO vote.

If they want to keep the PDP alive, they perform reform now or loss the election period.  Sometime I wonder about Jonathan. What is he waiting for. Can he win the election without reform NO. When they tell him Kano is 20 billion people and Sokoto state 1 trillion people voter for A northerner. . And gave the vote to a northerner and he pack is load to yenagoa, then he would know why we want him to do reform now.

in a democratic setting, there is what we call political party. every political party has its manifestoes and in this manifesto, every party tells the people what they have in stock for them.

if jonathan wants to context in any election, he has to check out the programmes of different parties and then choose where his annointing is so based on what parties have in stock, ppl vote them.

have u seen the republicans and democrats in the usa? have u asked while one fights and the other one does not? it is abt the party programmes.

here in nigeria, pdp has been in power for the past 11 yrs and have proved that they are irresponsible so voting them and their candidates makes no sense.

i hope with these few points of mine, i have been able to convience and not confuss u that parties are responsible for their candidates behaviour hence voting candidates mostly depends on party.

@topic,

where will jonathan get the votes to win in a free and fair elections? from the yorubas or the hausas? am afraid he will fail in his own state.

I dont see Jonathan as being capable of running the affairs of the country especially when he is confronted with the problem of saying the truth in the midst of thousands of liars. Remember Yar'adua CV showed how honest and sincere the Late man was but dealing with sycophancy and political thievry of the people he was working with sent him to his untimely grave!

I am of the opinion that Jonathan should see himself as a prophet sent by God to diagnose and cure Nigerian political decadence. So the young man need not contest so as to afford him the chance of putting in place a free and fair election which will be the foundation of a strong political future for Nigeria. If he does this, credible people will show interests in contesting for elections and Nigeria will be governed by God-chosen people and his name will forever linger in the country's history as the true stateman just like Nelson Mandela of South Africa. However if he contests, I will not only see him as being greedy but also regard him as a Messiah who gets carried away with sell enrichment and fails to deliver God's message out of selfishness, so I'd rather vote for the devilish IBB than wasting my vote for JONATHAN.

i dont think he can conduct a free and fair election in the first case, secondly he has interest in the offfice (2011-2015) so tell me how he will not rig himself in, i dont really trust him, but he seems to be the "devil you know" for now. we will continue to wait and see, but jonathan is not the most popular politician at the moment, he is just being opportunistic, really he is not a politician cos he hasnt won any plitical election b4, but a jonathan as presido is better than persident ibb

Nairaland is not the best place to conduct a poll, the polls are rigged.

If you claim Someone would win, you need to present the state and reason. Without reform based on satellite pictures the Yorubas would not vote for the PDP. period. We would not sacrify our children future for bread.

It is only a barstard1 Yoruba person that would be ready to allow the cheating to continue.
