Are Pastors Supposed To Be Celebrities?

u know i was gonna post a topic on N-L about celebrities but i dont know whether or not pastors fit in as celebrities in Nigeria.

but i think anyone who dresses in hugo boss suits, appears on primetimeTV and has a large following of adulating fans(doesn't quite sound like a pastor, does it?) qualifies to be a celebrity.

what do u think?

pastor are not in anyway suppose to be a celcbrity since they preach against the things of the world. JESUS christ demostrated that when devil tempted HIM after he had finished fasting for 40 day & 40 night.HE resisted devil by rejecting the things of the world.

Well if pastors are to be celebrities it should be for the right reasons.Moses was a leader in Israel and was a celebrity in his own right. The prophets were associated with kings, performed miracles and as a result became celebrated among the people.Jesus was so popular with the Jews that at a point he became the number 1 threat to public safety in the books of Herod and Pilate.

If pastors are to be celebrities it should be for their works and not for burning church members like human waste.

Jesus was definitely a celebrity. He was widely known and people came from very far to hear him.I'm sure if there was television in his day Judas wouldn't need to kiss him.lol

It's inevitable that pastors become celebrities,we live in a world of glitz, glamour and t.v. ratings.

It's okay as long as they don't become crazed egomaniacs as so often happens.

it depends on the pastors themselves,

if they want to be in the limelight they'll be they'll just do it with the pretense of tryin to reach everyone by using television,

the bogus ones would want it so that they can get more "customers" (u know wat i mean)

Nothing wrong wiff that!

Chambers' Dictionary definition of Celebritiy: The condition of being celebrated: fame: notoreity: a person of distinction or fame.

As long as Pastors are celebrated for a good reason, then there's nothing bad to it. Even the word of God promises to set followers of God apart from other men. That will definitely make people celebrate you!

See eh!,everybody loves the good things of this life, even pastors.come to think it, pastors this days encourage their congregation to be the head and not the tail, and in the process of showing examples they(pastors) dress well, eat well, live in big houses, drive the best of cars or even acquire jets, etc and before you know it they become household names, thus celebrities.and don't forget that in Nigeria there is competition on getting new members so every pastor want to be heard.u understand?

Hi Everybody,

I actually did not want to comment on this topic initially,

but i found it necessary to do so now.

I am sure we are very use to the story in the Bible about Miriam Moses sister.

She critisized Moses for marrying a foreign wife.

Truely she was right but God was angry with her.

Why? She talked wrongly about God's anointed and she attracted God's wrath.

The result was that she became a leper.

Lets be careful with this topic.

Leave God's anointed alone. Let HIM be their judge.

If their claim to be called by God, then it is none of our business critisizing their wrongs

Thanks

Jesus was famous, he did things no one else had done. there's no way he wouldn't have been famous. however, we can see that his attitude to fame was different. whenever ppl came to see him, he turned them to God. pastors and evangelists with healing ministries, or large congregations would be famous but they should turn the ppl to God and away from themselves. The problem comes when they begin to enjoy the fame.

And why should they be celebrities? I thought men of the cloth were supposed to have a great degree of humility? From what i see these days, they are more than flambouyant. Is this a way of drawing people into their fold? Correct if I am wrong.

Pastors could be celebrities.

I don't see anything wrong with that

at all. John the baptisit was a celebrity, Jesus was DEFINATELY

a celebrity and so many other people in the bible.

Forget celebrity and other ways of finding faults please.

like it or not, these pastors have a way of sneaking up on your attention. come back home folks, every sinner knows chris oyakilome by name and face, his name is synanymous with miracles. and as for grammar, take chris okotie, want some funkified americanised preaching, paul adefarasin will readily come to your mind. and the list goes long on.like it or not, they have their space and your attention. and as for the question of their celebriety status being right or wrong, i will just say even jesus was a celebriety in his days. but make una wait oh, how what happens to all those offerings and tithes under their care? am not suggesting it's helps a long way in tushing up their celebriety status oh. i no wan carry sin.

Lol, Seun. It depends on the meaning of celebrity. There are a few I've been privileged to watch on TV who are not in that class and do not encourage such lifestyle. One is the late Adrain Rogers on Bellview Baptist Church in TN, USA; another id Dr. David Jeremiah of Turning Point Ministry (another Baptist in USA); a third is Dr. D. James Kennedy of Coral Ridge Ministry (Presbyterian minister), and a fourth is Zac Poonen of Bangalore, India.

Okay, these are admittedly 'foreign' ministers, but I've been out of Nigeria for so long as to know what's happening back home. I know there are a lot of Televangelists who are flamboyant and celebrity-style ministers; but perhaps there are others in Nigeria or on the Africac Continent who are not so lavish or extravagant in their tastes and lifestyles.
