History

African Muslim culture has been a dynamic and vibrant religion in the first century of its life. Islamic rulers extended their power to the North of the continent. By the XIII century the Muslim population had dominated in most African cities.

Many Africans adopted the Muslim faith and yet began to take Arabic names. However, they were Africans by nature. Islam neither destroyed the pre-existing cultures nor eliminated the identity of Africans. Many African societies soon started interpreting Muslim dogma and rituals in accordance with African realities. Sometimes the results of such interpretations drastically distorted the original teachings and shocked the orthodox Muslims.

As a result, half of the African continent population was included in the area of influence of the Muslim religion. This process began in Africa, almost simultaneously with the creation of the first Muslim society in Arabia. By the early modern period of world history there had not been a single district in Africa not affected by the control of Muslim society.

The twentieth century also confirmed the strength of Islam positions in Africa. Since the 1950s, the process of politicization of Islam, which was particularly increased in the 1980s, has begun in numerous African countries.

Present situation

Islam is practiced by over 45% of Africa's population. About half of the adherents of Islam live in North Africa. Moreover, Egypt is home to over a fifth of African Muslims. In West Africa, Muslims constitute over 33% of the population, half of which is in Nigeria. In East Africa, less than a fourth of the Muslim population lives, where they form about 30%. In many states, Islam is practiced by more than 90% of the population. These are such African Muslim countries as Tunisia, Egypt, Mauritania, Libya, Algeria, Morocco, the Republic of Djibouti, Somalia and the Comoros.

Such African countries as Gambia, Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Niger, Chad, and Western Sahara, Sudan are home to more than 50% of Muslims. In addition, plenty of adherents of Islam live in Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Kenya.

While most Muslims in Africa are Sunnis, the complexities of Islam on the continent are expressed in the presence of different schools and traditions, which are constantly struggling for supremacy.
