Early life and history

David Olaniyi Oyedepo was born in 1954 in Osogbo, Nigeria. He was brought up in a blended religious family. His dad, Ibrahim, was a Muslim. His mom, Dorcas, was a representative of the Eternal Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement. He was brought up by his grandma, who acquainted him with the ethics of Christian life through early morning prayers.

Oyedepo claims that he was born again in 1969, through the impact of his instructor, Betty Lasher, who noticed him through his secondary school days. He studied architecture at the Kwara State Polytechnic University and worked with the Federal Ministry of Housing in Ilorin before turning to evangelist work. Oyedepo got a Ph.D. in Human Development from Honolulu University, Hawaii, the USA.

Oyedepo says that through a 18-hour vision he has gotten an order from God to free the world from all the evil through proclaiming the expression of faith. This is the inaugural vision that prompted to the establishing of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, initially called Liberation Faith Hour Ministries.

Living Faith Church began in Kaduna. Then it moved to Lagos after Oyedepo asserted to have gotten directions from God to contact the people in Lagos.

Oyedepo is the wealthiest evangelist in Nigeria with a total assets of over $150 million. He possesses four private planes and a few houses around the world, including London and the United States. Oyedepo is a writer and distributer who has composed more than 70 headlines. Oyedepo established Faith Academy and Kingdom Heritage Schools to prepare the young people for worldwide impact.

In 1982, David Oyedepo married Florence Abiola Akano. They have four kids together. Two of them were appointed as Pastors in May 2007 by Kenneth Copeland.  

The place of worship

Oyedepo claims that in 1998 he was told by God to create another place for the Commission to take in the expanding number of the church’s followers. This brought to the building the 530 acres of land known as Canaanland. It became the 50,000 seats hall, the 'Confidence Tabernacle', which is presumed to be the biggest church amphitheater in the world. This was an accomplishment recorded by the Guinness Book of Records.
