Would You Tax Church Outfits?

I stay in the southeast and whenever i travel 2 Lagos i see a lot of churches that own universities, radio and tv stations, private jets, banks etc

If i was made the president of Nigeria,would it be unfair to force these outfits into the nigerian stock market and tax them? K'm also a christian and i'D like your views.

i wouldnt tax them but set a benchmark for charitable works i.e settn up free schorlaships,soup kitchens,mic ro finance e.t.c they should do on a quarterly or yearly basis with a department specially to make sure of the compliance though i believe 99.9% of the churches will comply,in that situation,they are not taxed like a regular business but are taking care of more social responsibilties which is meant to be the job of a charity

taxing them will not stop all that, however, if theya re made to declare thir income and make them to pay something back at the end of each year, that wills top, cos i dont agree with the new trend of them buying private jets either.

Maybe if churches start getting taxed, Pastors wont wear power suits, demand private jets, live in unbelievable opulence and spend frivolously!

Many churches function like corporations and are a BOOMING BUSINESSes. WHY NOT ?

like the bible says "give to ceasar what belongs to ceasar."

You cant tax the church, but if Nigeria was done right, you could make the preachers and pastors to file income tax at the end of the year, and at that point, you can see if they shd pay tax or not.

Most of the churches shd be forced to register in a right manner, and all their books shd be reviewed at the end of the year, make sure all donor has receipts and check what the churches has done with the money, it is all about accountability.

Also, there is nothing wrong in taxing all they have like the schools, and other stuff.

By the laws setting up a church, they cannot be taxed as they are not recognized as businesses or profit making organizations by law. They are charitable instituitions by law (even though they hardly engage in any charity). What i believe should be done is that they should be regulated, Auditted and closely monitored by goverment. they should be made to give account of their resources and goverment should ensure church revenue is expended as stated in their memoradum and articles of association (which is mostly charitable activities). That apart churches should not be allowed to set up busisnesses under any guise. And even if they must establish schools and hospitals goverment should ensure they are not for profit organizations and the church is actually subsidizing them.

@seun

putting them in the stock exchange means turnin them 2 public liability company.the public should be allowed 2 purchase shares.also @ the end of every fiscal year.

There auditors make public, statement of accounts.

the schools, hospitals, radio stations they build should be taxed as subsidiaries. government has no right to force a company into the stock exchange.
