WHAT ARE THE METHOD USED IN CHARGING A GOLD-LEAF ELECTROSCOPE?

Gold-leaf electroscope is an instrument for detecting and measuring static electricity or voltage. OR is an instrument used for testing positive and negative charges.

The electroscope can be charged by induction and or contact.

By induction: when say a negatively charged rod is brought NEAR the cap of a gold leaf electroscope,the brass cap becomes positively charged..the free electrons on the cap are repelled to the gold leaf.This means the gold leaf is negatively charged causing divergence in the leaf and vice versa.

By contact: slide a negatively charged rod along the brass cap,some of the electrons are transferred from the rod to the cap,causing divergence in the leaf.
