Food chain (trophic chain, food chain)
- the chain of related species, consistently extracting organic matter and energy from the original food substance: each previous link in the chain is food for future managers. In the diagrams the energy transfer circuit is indicated by the arrow pointing from the previous to the subsequent link (i.e., from eat to eat and not Vice versa!). In the food chain at the transition from link to link is measured to 90% of the energy (dissipated as heat), so the number of links in the chain does not usually exceed five. It is clear that the longer the food chain, the less value is the ratio of the products of its last link to the products initial.
