The highest military rank in Nigerian Army is the Chief of Army Staff. This position is often occupied by the most senior commissioned officer. He is a Lieutenant General in Nigerian Army. Tukur Yusuf Buratai is the current Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria. He was appointed to this position by President Muhammadu Buhari on July 13 in the previous year. He was commissioned to the command in 1983. He had multiple administrative, command and instructional appointment.

General Buratai is originated from Buratai town. It is Borno State Biu Local Government Area. His father is Yusuf Buratai. He was a non-commissioned officer in the Royal West African Frontier. Yusuf Buratai was also a veteran of World War Two. General Buratai gained his primary education in Buratai town, He graduated the Government Teacher College Potiskun which in Yobe State.
Military career of Chief of Army Staff in Nigeria
In January 1981, Buratai attended the Nigerian Defence Academy Kaduna. He had the right to be in this academy as a member of the 29 RC (Regular Combatant Course). Upon graduating from the academy and completing his Officer Cadet training, he gained the rank of a Second Lieutenant. On the 17th of December, he was commissioned to the Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army. The Chief of Army Staff also has a degree in Philosophy from Bangladesh University of Professionals and a degree in history from the University of Maiduguri.
He served in many places around the world; his military career includes serving in 26 Amphibious Battalion Elele which was stationed in Port Harcourt. He was commissioned as a Military Observer at the United Nations in Verification Mission 2 which took place in Angola. He was later commissioned to the 26 Guards Battalion in Lagos. In the same Lagos Garrison Command Camp, future Chief of Army Staff served as an administrative officer at the State House. He served in Abuja 82 Motorized Battalion. He was also commissioned to Abuja 81 Battalion in Bakassi Peninsular. He later became a Directing Staff at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College. In that period, he earned the prestigious “Passed Staff College Dagger.”
Later in Abuja, future Army Chief of Staff served at AHQ Dept of Army Policy and Plans. A few years later, he served as an Assistant Chief of Staff Administrative matters in HQ Infantry Centre of Jaji. He used to be a Director of Dept of Land Warfare in that Armed Forces Command and Staff College. Tukur Yusuf Buratai was a commander of 2 Brigade in Port Harcourt. He commanded the operation PULO SHIELD in the Sector 2. When he was promoted to the rank of Major General, he was commissioned to the Nigerian Army School of Infantry. He was also promoted to the Director of Procurement DHQ. Later, Future Army Chief of Staff was appointed to the newly created Multinational Joint Task Force. He was appointed there under the commission of the Lake Chad Basin Commission and the Benin Republic. He was appointed there until became the Chief of Army Staff.
His deployments of operations include United Nations Verification Mission Military Observer in Angola. He also took part in Op HARMONY IV in the Bakassi Peninsular. He took part in different operations across Africa, like OP LAFIYA DOLE, OP ZAMAN LAFIYA, MNJTF, OP SAFE CONDUCT, OP PULO SHIELD and OP MESA. He was appointed to be Chief of Army Staff on July 13, 2015, by President Muhammadu Buhari.
