Corp Members: What Is The Next Step After Your Nysc?

HI,

THIS IS A MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION.

A LOT OF CORP MEMBERS SEEM NOT TO ACHIEVE ANYTHING TANGIBLE WITHIN THE SERVICE YEAR AND END UP FRUSTRATED WITH LIFE.

I WAS A BATCH A 2008 CORP MEMBER AND WOULD LIKE TO CREATE A FORUM ON THIS TOPIC.

PLEASE KINDLY SUGGEST AN OPINION FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE SERVING HOUSE MEMBERS.

There are several things to do after going through the Nysc camp. First of all, you need to receive the letter with the area to settle down. And now it is up to you to find a good home to stay in. Then you should report to two places before returning home. One of them is your local office of Nysc and the other one is your PPA. After you do that you become a full fledged corper.

I love the various posts on this thread but come to think of it, the best best plan a corps member can make is to go into business during his or her service year. I have done so and now I'm currently managing a viewing centre of my own along the way seeing other opportunities coming my way. Many corps members will benefit if they follow this path. Follow my threads to read how i managed to do it.

Some of us has finished our service year, go back home and stay idle without work, some of us is still serving and we will soon pass out from national service. That means we will not be receiving alert anymore from Federal alawy. What a sad news! Like it or yes, that is the fact. Of course those that are extremely very lucky or those that are vigilant of the present economic trend in Nigeria will strive to success. Those that will earnestly search for knowledge and opportunity will succeed, those that know the dig dong search strategies will eventually find opportunities, those that are ambitious will find a lucrative business to do and those that are lazy will go back home and stay after to realize when they are old. So which category are you. Are you ready to make a division today so that you can enjoy tomorrow.

Take a look at this link http://www.latestjobsinfo.com/search/label/Self%20Employment%20Tips,

I have a long list of self employment ideas, profitable small business you can do with very little capital for free access. you are free to read the contents, ask any question that you need clarification in this forum or in the site. My dream is to help you make it in life.

Such an educative thread. The present Nigeria we are in calls for people who will take their own destiny in there hand.

I think we will start to get it right when we understand that we owe ourself the duty of becoming what we ought to be. The world is not fair, so do not expect fairness from anybody, Be in charge of your life.

I run a thread on free tips for self-employment creation, here on Nairaland. The topic is 'How to Turn Yourself into A Multi Million Brand'. It is under the business/money sub-category by keemax. It is my contribution to your success.

Thanks.

Interesting read and great advices here.

But let me chip in a little bit.

For my fellow serving Corp members please you need to understand that this one year is a time to serve, so put your heart into the service, the law of karma doesn't only apply to people who have done bad deeds.

secondly you must plan....plan....and plan.

This is time to ask yourself serious questions,

What am I passionate about?

What are my opportunities like?

What skills do I possess?

Etc. Just do an extensive soul searching, tell yourself the truth and start planning from there.

after getting the Answer to your questions, you should start asking questions, do a research, get opinions, find out what it would take to get to where you want to be.

Thirdly, don't do a certification just for the fun of it, rather do it for the knowledge. Have a focus, everybody is doing HSE, PMP, NIM, etc does not mean you too will do it. Find out which cert. Relates to your passion and skills.

It is okay to do a masters degree program, but get this straight, if your Sole purpose is to get a high paying job, then you are in for a shocker cos guess what? There are so many people with masters who are yet to get jobs talk less of good ones.

And like others have said, never underestimate the power of networking.

Attitude is everything, treat people with respect and ALWAYS maintain your integrity, it is very important. Let people know you for what you stand for, it Will come in handy later in life.

Also, there are so many people who would want to take advantage of you, please vet every trainer, institution, or certification before you put your hard earned money into it.

Finally always stay positive. Your mind set matters a lot.

I am a serving corp member, but I have no fear of what the future holds cos I have this belief, that no matter the challenges that life throws at me I would find a way to overcome them with God helping me.

Stay focused, stay positive, and have the right attitude.

Meet me at the TOP.

I will be passing out in some days time.. And I have bn thinking of what life holds for me after service. I invested a little on myself during this service year, wrote ICAN exam and now qualified as a Chartered Accountant despite having my first degree in another field entirely.. I have really learnt alot from all your post but if I could have my way, I would go for my MBA but currently facing the challenge of how to finance it. This has made me to start forwarding my CV all around. I have written some tests and now in second or 3rd stage of some of the offers. As a result of the financial constraint, I have decided to work for 2 years and proceed for my masters in 2014. I would appreciate it, if an experienced fellow in this forum can further advice me if there is any other alternative to my plans..

Firstly Moderator this thread should make front page.

Good quality advice has been given by previous posters.

NYSC to ♍ƺ has lost whatever relevance it has when it was started. Since the government is not ready to provide anything to its citizen job inclusive, the service year should be used wisely to think and channel out a career path. It is the first time that some younger ones are leaving home so they should use that to test our independent they can be from family influence and take a firm grip on their life.

To serving corp members, I will advise you look beyond. If you did well in school, then your service year is the time to scout for scholarships for an advanced degree and apply. Also network. Many of the guys and gals you met in camp are highly connected. Do not be an island of your own, meet people, exchange contacts and keep the communication flowing. Your first job might come through that nerdish looking chap or the mouthy babe. Also start applying for jobs 3 months before you finish your service year. Remember old colleagues from your university days who studied the same course with you. Your awareness about most job opportunities in your field will come from that sect.

Also learn to plan and save, no matter how little. It is a good culture that would help you in future is adhered to religiously. Not to forget, your networking must extend to professionals in your field. Attend conferences, seminars and industry meetings organised in your field. It's a great opportunity to meet too dawgs in your profession.

I'm done with the NYSC and I wish you all the very best. And for the randy folks, STDs are real. Use protection, or better still, abstain from sex. Awoof dey run belle.[thanks a lot 4 d info

I believe the greatness america attained today is as a result of the mindset of the citizens. An average american has an entrepreneural mind. Our mindset realy matters. From the little income you have every month, try and save 40% at least. At the end of the service year, you realise it's something. No matter how meagre it may be, you can start up small business with it. Little drops of water they say, make an ocean. Corpers must'nt waste their precious time looking for jobs that do not exist outside there. The labour market is oversaturated. A word is enough for a wise.

I am a batch A 2012 corper posted to cross river buh am yet to report to ma PPA cos i was posted to a primary school in remote village.

Wen i saw ma ppa leta i couldnt believe ma eyes ' a primary skol' i mean considering ma discipline and grade. (human resource management wit a 1st class). I considered it an abuse of ma qualification. They hav refused to change mine wen infact D̶̲̥̅̊ε̲̣̣̣̥γ̲̣̣̥ hav been changin for other corpers. Am considering been a ghost corper wen the worse get to the worse. (If U̶̲̥̅̊ like disagree to serve nigeria is nt by force)

Ma tinkin is dat dis nysc programme shld be a 2way tin. First contributin to community service and second equipping urself be it for the labour market or educational advancement. How den can D̶̲̥̅̊ε̲̣̣̣̥γ̲̣̣̥ send a corper to a primary skol sumtin dat wit ma field of study i cannot be proud to attach to ma cv in the event dat am luking for work.

I dont want to waste ma one yr i want to add value to ma lyf while doin sumtin for the society. The primary skol cannot give M̶̲̥̅Ƹ such an opportunity.

Please anyone who is in calabar and can fix M̶̲̥̅Ƹ up to W̶̲̥̅̊hε̲̣̣̣̥я̩̥̊ε̲̣̣̣̥ i can advance ma skil while contributin to any organization should contact M̶̲̥̅Ƹ on ma email address. Wokofred4reel@yahoo.co.uk

Most people don't really know their worth

till they as much as try.

You need to know some secrets friends.

Just a hint:

Understand that the world of today places emphasis on value.

Who are you?

What can you offer?

What problem can you solve?

Is there really a problem you can solve? Can you see problems around you? Can you sense a need around you?

Where you live?

Take for example, there is hardly anything you bought, say your Television, books, candy and so on that didn't come to you by a truck. Look around you! That is a need that was met.

Imagine the chain of supply for that candy before finally getting to your door step.

It simply implies that people have been paid for that service.

==

Don't kill your dreams.

Money is being given in exchange as payment for value received.

Add value to lives by solving problems and get paid.

Money in the real sense is just a paper.

You are worth more than that piece of paper.

But if it were so easy to be a millionaire, don't you think every other person on the road would be one?

The difference is the way we think, our responsibilities and our commitment to meet them.

Do you have a goal? Or are you just a spectator? Talk to me, get inspired.

i love this thread majority of this corper don think entrepreneurship at all all peope think about is when i finish with a strong 2.1 or 1st class i will get a gud job instead of having a hand tool job or some service they could render to people has they graduate or during school. i have a brother who love design web now he into it full time now he makes money instead of staying at home looking for a job he makes money

secondly the issue of education have been abuse in this country i studied chemistry in the university instead of we should involve ourselve more in pratical work that would be applicable to life issue instead we just cramming cramming cramming noting to work with or an entreprenuship base programme or frreelance should be run in line with ur course in skl thats why we will continue in this high rate of unemployment issue in nigeria thats why wil never win a nobel prize in science unless that person travel abroad to study the question is whats ur passion do what u love doing if its music ,comedy, motivational talk, graphic design, fashion pls continue with it very soon u will see the reward in it coz WE TEND TO BASE ALL OUR HOPES ON getting more certificate INSTEAD OF THINKING WEALTH CREATION.

You wil succeed!

What is the quality of stuff being dished out by lecturers in our higher institution of learning in the coutry? The preliminary training by any employer of labour is induction course. Train-the-trainer courses are not made available to the lecturers. Some are already obsolete in their ideas. Hand-outs being utilised since 15 yrs ago is still the same lecture stuff being given out to students. I could remember, a 1st Class graduate of our universities in those days is a graduate anywhere in the world, before the advent of sorting.

Total overhauling of academic system is what is required to arrest this downward trend, otherwise, our generation yet unborn will not forgive our leaders for the bastardisation of educational system.

The NYSC scheme is a failed project. The only thing I see that it has achieved is cultural integration, but not in every part of the country, not with the Jos crisis in which innocent corp members lost their lives. Many may argue in favour of the scheme but the cons far outweigh the pros.

My experience was not too good. I majored in Chemical engineering, did very well in the university and was hoping to use the scheme as an opportunity to gain experience in the industry. But this did not materialise as I was posted to a state in the West to teach in a government secondary school-for one year. Now, someone may say "yeah, that's the whole idea of the selfless service" but I wish employers of labour understood that. In my field where experience in the industry is a major factor in recruiting staff, you can bet that the "selfless service" teaching experience don't mean jack. In the US, you graduate from college and get to work immediately. That way, you still get to remember most of what you learnt as an undergraduate and can apply it on the job.

In Nigeria, the case is different. If you do not consciously and consistently refresh your memory and broaden your understanding about ongoings in your field, you can be sure that 50% of what you knew back then would have evaporated during the course of "selfless service" to your country Nigeria who does not give a hoot about you. So to what purpose and end has the scheme really served? A scheme that gulps N 34 billion yearly and is not productive? Our leaders need to have a rethink about the whose NYSC stuff. Either re-brand it or scrap it, period!

All i want to add is that while waiting for call up letter and during service, corpers shuld learn other skills outside their proffesion esp one that will lead to financial independence.
