Is This A Joke? Shaibu Amodu Includes Kayode Odejayi In Eagles Squad

I can't believe what I'm seeing. Kayode Odejayi is in Naija squad. This is a man who has scored like 1 goal in his last 27 games. This just goes to show that Shaibu Amodu is out of touch. He doesn't know what is happening outside Naija. Odejayi is a grade-one wastepipe as evidenced in the FA Cup semi-final. Just cos he scored against Chelsea, that doesn't make him a star.

Tunji Adeyemi was my joker i thought no one would remember him. Shooting striker from 1988 i think he was dropped at the last minute in the Saudi 89 squad.

Amuneke was more or less Africa's best in 1991 All Africa games in Cairo, from where he get a good deal with Zamalek. He was just waiting by the door then.

I still insist that we don't have world class talent in Nigeria any more not even African class talent.

Do you guys remember Taofik Malik in shooting?, Dotun Alatishe, Mojeed Azeez, Edith Agoye, I dare anyone who remembers Tunji Adeyemi - Shooting Stars Striker in 1988-89.

Do you remember the Cyril Levi of Iwuanyawu that got battered by Setif in the Sekou Toure cup of 1988?,

The BCC Lions squad of late 80's under Amodu Moses Kpakor, Amir Angwe, John Zaki, John Agum, Edema Fuludu, and others those boys were hot then they dominated Nigeria and Africa,

The stationary Stores of Peter Obitor, Demola Johnson, Do you guys remember the FA cup finals between stores and Rangers in 1991 or so?

Abiola Babes vs Leventis? Toyin Ayinla and Raymond King's Saga

Naija footie was hot then. Do you remember the Udoji United team that took naija league by storm in 1992?

Dimeji was hot in Canada 87 With Tony Emodofu, Taiwo Enegwa, Philip Osondu, Lemmy Issah, Peter Ogaba. That game against Russia I cried my eyes out That was the last time I wept for 9ja footie

@Akolawole,

Kokoro-Muyiwa lawal was in the U-17 team that they forgot their passport in lagos when they were to play Benin Republic They went on to win the Meridien cup?

Do you know Femo Scorpions of Eruwa in the 80's and Young Stars FC of Ibadan? Those guys churn out talented players anyhow but a pity most of them never cut it with the National Teams . I hear that Ibadan fans jazz the players so that they wont suceed outside. can you remember any player from Ibadan who suceeded Big in Naija Maybe Mutiu ( Do you know Nafiu Mutiu's brother?)

Was it the Adeolu Adekola in the Chile 87 team that could not score a goal with Ene Okon , Etim Essin,

I remember one guy that held the ball in the box in National Stadium against Eritrea claiming he heard a whistle from the crowd

@MC, Semitoje was a defender , And he played for an Eastern team I think Iwuanyawu but I cant still remember the guy you were talking about.

Hope not Taofik Malik, Ishaya Jatau, or Julius Akpele

I disagree I think Nigeria lacks the talent to play quality football at the highest level. All our players are grossly overrated How many of them play regularly in top European teams. In this UEFA champions league only Mikel and Taiwo played so where are the talents? We are just like a Little better than South Africa All noise no Action.

@ Mc

Well, it is very obvious that they are really under peforming when it comes to national assignments.  I am willing to wager that the problem is more of tactical than talent. Apart from those strikers, we also have up coming ones like Ike Kalu and Joseph Akpala whom I believe emerged as the top marks man in belgium. So the future is not exactly bleak in the striking department. To mould all these guys into one vicious force in Africa is another matter. I just hope Amodu is up to the task.

Now we can list about 5 to 6 strikers ; how about the wing play. How many natural wingers do we have in our team today? The few times Nigeria have done well in senior tournament we have always done that on the strenght of our wing play. The finidis, babangida's , Amuneke's all come to mind. If Odejayi was a player in that mould (and I don't even mean in terms of quality) I would not be screaming my head off.

IMO, Ogbeche was very unlucky. Things happened too quickly for him and I guess he lost confidence. But he was really unlucky. So far, he is the only player that has made Martins look really good in a Nigerian shirt in that friendly against Ireland. I feel really sorry for Ogbeche. Every time I went to watch Naija match, he really impressed me.

No be Isaac.

The guy was playing for a 2nd /3rd division in Lagos league NOT EVEN National league.

Then to Sutin stars, National team, same year.

0

Isaac Semitoje was in the super eagles team as a squad player. He was not really an integral part of the team

As for the stuff about some players doing well in club sides and not hitting it big in the national team, well that is not new. But that is not enuff reason to start drafting any tom , dick and harry into the national team. I still maintain that call-ups should purely on merit and form. And that is why I question Odejayi's inclusion. I feel that there are other players out there that have earned the right to be called up but were over looked and suddenly Odejayi scores a solitary goal and he is called up.

@Akolawole

He played for just under 6 months. He was awesome in the championship and made the grade in the premiership. However he had to play at least 8 more months beofre getting into the Three Lions squad. Ashley was a teenager in the championship and should get better ( and did get better ) with age but Odejayi is 4 years from retirement (officially) and CANNOT possibly improve to get ahead of Utaka,Yakubu, Martins, Uche I, Uche K and Odemwingie in the Eagles striking perking order.

Now Odejayi has not bamboozled the championship defenders with goals to even warrant a call-up. Remember just a good performance in the championship doesn't necessarily mean class. It just means potential to go up and do better ( ask david Nugent). Now Danny Shittu plays in the championship and is able to make the team of the season. He has played in the premiership and can be considered to be a decent player given his showing in the nations cup. But Odejayi? cannot make top 5 strikers in the championship, yet gets into the super eagles just because Amodu is too lazy to watch Nigerian League games and NFA is too poor to send him to Europe to look for other strikers doing well in mediocre leagues like the championship.

How many months was Ashley in Watford premiership onslaught before he went to Villa.

I was a lover of Ashley/Kings combination in championship.

If i had my way. his other 2 brothers have to join Chelsea NOWWWWWW.

Maybe his Dad( Pastor Odejayi) bribed Amodu or has helped Amodu.

Hehehe . . . . Akwuegbu. I remember I went to one Super Eagles game @ Loftus Road. I think it was against either Paraguay or Jamaica, I can't remember.  Akwuegbu was playing. The guy was so poor, me and my friends started chanting "Akwuegbu off, Akwuegbu off!". Soon enough, our whole section of the ground started chanting the same thing and they had to take him off quick quick.

Even that Okocha's friend was playing, the one that ended up at Bolton and didn't play a single game. I don forget in name. I think it was Ikechukwu Kalu. That guy was wastepipe.

No, but seriously, there must be at least 20 guys ahead of Odejayi in the pecking order. From Martins to Yak, Utaka, Uche, Odemwingie etc, even Anichebe. Striker is not our problem at all. We need wingers.

@Akolawole

Ahsley Young went to Aston Villa in January of last year from Watford who were in the premiership at that time. David Nugent is a good example of a championship player who hasn't made the cut at the high level. Now the difference between David and Kayode is that whilst david scored lots of goals at the championship level, Kayode has done so infrequently at that level. If i go by your own analogy, Micheal Mifsud who scored two goals to knockout ManUtd in the Carling cup and Brian Howard who scored the winning goal against Liverpool are great players just because they managed to bang in a goal once against top opposition.

If Kayode is as good as you say he is, he should score more against poor defenders and be consistent, then we would be certain he is good enough for the super eagles. Remember, we shouldn't celebrate mediocrity.

He is competeing against Yakubu,Martins, Odemwengie,Uche etc for positions upfront. This saga reminds me of Ben Akwuegbu's spell with the super eagles. The guy couldn't even tear the austrian teams nets with goals yet found his way into the eagles and only managed a goal or two before his forced retirement.

Was it not the same Championship that produced Ashley Young, who within few months, get called up to england team and make the list for the best 11 players in the premiership.

Was it not a lower league time side that knocked United out of carling cup?

Was it not Barnsley that knocked Chelsea out?

1) When did Premiership start and when did Reuben debutted for Nigeria? [ I want precise answer]

2) Festus Onigbinde gave Yobo big chance to show-case himself after what happen with the big boys in Mali, i mean Oliseh and co.

3) To you Femi may be disbraceful. He istheyoungest player to that tournament and he want to the championship with his head held high after winning  Silver boot and Bronze ball in Under-17 world cup.

4) All of them were just quoting

(1.) Rueben Agboola never played in the Premiership. WRONG!

(2.) Onigbinde found Joseph Yobo. WRONG AGAIN!

(3.) Femi Opabunmi is a gem. DISGRACEFUL!

(4.) Reuters and BBC staff do not check their info before publishing. WRONG AGAIN!

1.) Yobo already played in Nations Cup before the World Cup so it was Shaibu Amodu not Onigbinde who brought him into the team. Opabunmi is a gem? He was our worst player in that WC with his silly white boots. Where the hell is he now?

2.) http://www.sporting-heroes.net/football-heroes/displayhero_club.asp?HeroID=15413

For your info Division 1 was renamed as Premiership around about 1992.

3.) Wow! - I had satellite in 1990. Does that also make me qualified to pick Super Eagles team?

4.) I am surprised you are asking for links. This news has been heavily reported on. Anyway . . . . . .

I can go on and on and on and on. Befor he went to Nations cup, he used to give interviews with French magazines EVERY WEEK telling them he wants to leave. When he came back from Nations Cup, Chelsea called a meeting with him and told him he will be allowed to leave in the summer but that he shouldn't give any more interviews saying he wants to leave until the season is over.

1) What of Yobo? He was Naija's best in that competition. If you dont know Yobo started his career as a Striker. Femi Opabunmi is a gem.

2) Reuben has never played in the premiership. Simple

3) Who told you Shaibu dont watch footie? In 1995 while seconded to Sutin Stars, he was one of very few that have Satelites in their house.

I am still awaiting those URL for that Drogba links.

^Utaka was the only good thing to come out of that WC. I can also name several flops such as Opabunmi etc. Yes, we were an embarassment because we were bottom of the group. I even remember Yobo playing in midfield.

Agboola played for Southampton in the Premiership (or the first division as it was called back then)

You do research by actually watching the boy play. Amodu CANNOT HAVE watched him play maybe except for the Chelsea match. If he had watched him, I can ASSURE you that he will not be receiving call-up to Super Eagles.

Yeah, I know Eromoigbe is already in SE. (This guy, you must think say I no sabi any football, you too dey make accusation say I no sabi dis or I no sabi dat)

1) Onigbinde laid a good foundation for us. Is losing to Argentina by a goal an embarrasment? Is bringing UTAKA to the team an embarassement?

2) When did Reuben played in the premiership?

3) Eroimegbe is already in Super Eagles

4) Research from where? From goal or where?

5) The same way you will see hundreds that are better than Okocha, Kanu etc at ajegunle

^^^Yeah - but Onigbinde did not do anything in that World Cup. We embarrassed ourselves there.

And by the way my nickname in Naija was Rueben Agboola - how can I not know him? He also played in the Premiership as well. Plus, you can't compare 1992 to 2008.

We should open the camp up to people who have the talent regardless of which club they play for. For example, Eromoigbe is an excellent player, regardless of the fact he plays for a small club. But you ALSO have to do research to see if they have the talent. Anyone who has seen Barnsley play will tell you ho-ha that Odejayi does not have the talent. Not even close. He does not have the talent to even play Naija league, talkless of Super Eagles. I personally know several boys on Harold Wilson road and in Borokiri, PH who are better than him.

why are Nigerians defending this inclusion. this same NFA sacked Amodu for incompetence, Amodu has not been known to have done better elsewhere or even attended any course in the last 5 years. Yet he was given the job and his first faux pas is to invite one goal wonder 'Odejayi' to come and bail Nigeria's attack burstling with talent left, right and centre.

I am appalled people are supporting the idea and comparing it to Agboola and Amokachi. why can't they clamour for the inclusion of Victor Ezeji, Otorogu or the highest goal scorer in AJ league.

Odejayi is a waste pipe. If he cannot score 20 goals in a mediocre league against mediocre defence, then how the hell would he do so against world class defenders? Ghana would never invite Agogo if they had the same number of strikers Nigeria has.

scoring against chelsea doesnt make you world class.

@poster

It is not a joke. this is Nigeria where nonsense happens and I would be forced to believe his selection has more to do with is tribe rather than his fabled abilities infront of goal.

Don't mind him.

I wouldn't even call him a perpetual Championship player. The guy has only been ONE season in Championship. Before that, he was a semi-professional. Earlier in his career, he was released on a free transfer by Bristol City who played in the fourth English division at the time. Plus, he is already 26 years old so I don't see his 'potential'.

You see - this is easy research that these so-called Naija pundits could easily do but fail to do. Instead, they mislead Nigerians into thinking that the guy is a prospect. Some pundits indeed! It also goes to show how much Shaibu Amodu is out of touch. He is a dinosaur.

Ako, I cannot believe you are here arguing the merits of Kayode Odejayi. Please do not dig a hole for yourself before I expose your argument. You always want to take the opposite view to me? Wetin be your own? See, you want even turn this small issue into debate. OK, I will oblige you - but only because I can't stand ignorance.

(1.) http://www.skysports.com/football/player/0,19754,11713_195098,00.html - Check his stats - 4 goals in 43 games. His average rating is 5/10 - Below average. If he is below average for Barnsley, a team facing relegation from the Championship, what will he be for Naija?

Someone mentioned Junior Agogo. Junior Agogo is a top star for Notts Forest. Plus he is wanted by Premiership clubs. The only reason he is playing in lower divisions is because he went to America to play for Colorado Rapids. When he wanted to come back, he had to come back to a lower level because no one respects American football. Even at Colorado, he scored a goal almost every game. Even still, he is only playing for Ghana because Ghana is very weak in the strikers department. I assure you, he cannot smell Naija squad.

I watch Championship football so please do not lecture me about Odejayi.

Before we even talk about Odejayi, we have so many other Naija strikers doing well in Ukraine, Belgium and many other leagues. Okoronkwo is always toward the top of the charts in Ukraine. Ditto Manasseh Ishiaku while he was in Belgium till he moved to Germany last season. I would even rather recall Ogbeche before I look at Odejayi.

(2.) I do not care to learn their name.

(3.) BCC Lions of Gboko? Come-on now, you think say na yesterday them born me? Hasn't he been Naija coach twice before? Even Oliseh said the same things I am saying so if you have any questions, please refer them to Oliseh.

(4.)

a. Yekini played in the eighties and early nineties. Football has changed a lot since then. Back then, I remember that Uche Okafor was in the squad despite not having a club.

b. Setubal were a yo-yo team, not strictly a 2nd league team. They used to alternate between divisions and Yekini topped the charts in both divisions.

4) Whose yardstick? Did you even know Shaibu at all?

Give the boy a chance. Who knows

Yekin excelled for Nigeria when he was playing for setubal(then a division 2 team in portugal) whereas Owobukiri Richard sruggled even though he was a winner of the second highest goal scorer in Europe.

Funny how every one in Naija thinks he is a good player but everyone in UK thinks he is rubbish. I noticed that AIT and other Sports shows have been giving him airtime in Naija like he is actually a prospect.

Trust me guys, he IS absolutely rubbish. No be come chop. Those Nigerian football pundits know nothing about football. Everytime I watch Naija pundits talking about European football, I have to laugh - the average person on Nairaland knows way more than them. They don't do their research. They just found out that this Naija guy scored against Chelsea and they started bigging him up. In the UK he is a laughing stock. It just goes to show that Shaibu Amodu knows nothing about what is happening in Europe and should not have been appointed in the first place.

Odejayi is rubbish, just like his cousin, Ade Akinbiyi aka Ade Akin bad buy as the Leicester fans call him. Go and check his stats. This guy is a non-league player. I swear he scored something like 5 goals this season despite playing almost every week.

0

And it still bugs me how he ended up in the team. That guy cant pass the ball to save his own life.

About Kayode,

He has not made the team, at least not yet. Never heard of him until he scored that goal against Chelsea. Does that make him earn a national call-up? Only a joker in the name of a coach would think so. And the NFA has this uncanny penchant of hiring jokers in the name of coaches. Do they even have reason(s) for hiring and firing coaches? They fired Amodu sometime ago and now they are re-hiring him. Are they going to tell us the difference between the Amodu they fired and this particulalr Amodu they are hiring?

I looked at his list for the name of Joseph Akpala. I dont know the guy but anytime I check african goal scorers of the week , his name always pops up. Right now I believe he is the leading scorer in Belgium. No-one is calling him up. Kayode scores one goal against Chelsea, he earns a call up.
