[Poll] African Footballer Of The Year - Eto'o, Drogba, Essien, Kanu?

The CAF African footballer of the year seems debatable following the injury of Samuel and his helpless eviction from the world cup.  Kanu and Drogba had  good runs at the Cup of nations, Essien's been terrific in Chelsea, he did relatively well in the world cup and nation's cup, and so also did Drogba.

Guys, wetin una think? Who's your pick for the year 2006?

This was a 2007 thread, talking anout 2006 APOTY.

APOTY is so far a one-horse race in 2009. . . . and you know who the only horse is!

anyone who thinks Drogba and kanu deserves to be africans best player this season

needs a serious intervention, Eto'o is more like it.

Essien hasn't played enough games this season due to injuries to merit the award

Didier Drogba: i dont even need to do an indept evaluation on him, just look at his form this season

Kanu: this is actually a joke, there is absolutely no consideration for papilo, he is past his prime

Kanu and Aboutrika have been dropped from the list.

Yea, I know they were dropped some weeks back. I just wanna update this thread. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place in March and Zizou (not Akide) will do the honour of presenting the awards.

No one deserves the award more than Essien, but he did not show up at the cup of nations - obviously due to "injury".

In that case i'll give it to Drogba. He took his country to the world cup for the first time and was one of the top 3 highest goal scorers in the qualifiers (incl. Adebayor and Obagol). Drogba fought hard against cameroun in the qualifiers though lost 3-2 in that match. Drogba took the Ivoriens to the final of the nations cup after over a decade of reaching that far.

with those two in bag, plus to me he played well last season. 12 premiership goals and 11 premiership assists is enough pride for an African.

Eto'o's finished with 5 goals at the cup of nations but could not go so far in the tourney. He did not play at the world cup and made up for this by finishing as top goal scorer, champion's league trophy, la liga trophy among others and surely deserves it.

Essien has been instrumental to his country and club and took them to a splendid maiden world cup outing. but did not show up at the nations cup for reasons best known to mourinho.

Kanu is fond of turning the game around for nigeria. with 6 goals and 3 assists for west brom last season after 19 starts, and miraculous adventures for Nigeria, especially in hopeless times, I think Kanu deserves a nomination.

but all in all, I guess it's time Drogba got this stuff and let's stop robbing Peter to Pay Paul. Okocha struggled to get this stuff but was denied, Eto'o has just won the FiFpro African footballer of the year and he truly deserves it, but let's face it this time around, if this is all the extra fire Drogba needs, let's give it to him.

I think Drogba wil just nick it,but come to think of it,are those guys@CAF nuts? Whats kanu doing on d list?fredie kanoute won d Uefa & Super cups, is currently d Pichichi in la liga. This shortlist doesnt make sense,it doesnt add up at all. Real madrid for ever.

I dont see Eto retaining the award when he is not the only African footballer doing well in their respective club.

All four nominated above were among the five finalists named by CAF for the African Footballer of Year 2006. The fifth player in the list is Egypt international Mohamed Aboutrika who helped Al Ahli defend their title earlier this month.

Once again, Eto'o has been tipped to retain his title as the king.

CAF awards would be taking place on Jan 18th and that makes Drogba to be in a pole position to win especially if he performs well enuff in December

I think the decision of the Union of African Footballer will not prevent Drogba from winning the African Footballer of the year award. I'm a stoich Barca fan & ordinarily would have prayed against Drogba, but to be frank with you, Drogba is outstanding now than any African player including my Eto'o. Please I advised that CAF should preach excellence.

Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o was named FifPro's African Footballer of the Year at an awards ceremony in Algeria yesterday.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/africa/6169906.stm .

If the Union of African Football players (UAF) feel Eto'o should take the award, do u think Drogba's got a chance to claim the CAF award?

Definitely it would be as tight as it was last year, Drogba has this primarily due to Eto's injury, Essien is also a very hot contender for the title
