I got to the office around 9.am because i was waiting for them to settle down before coming in. I was the only new person. I got there, and went into the managers office and the secretary took me to the man, who inturn told the secretary to take me to my department.

I reached there, after the introduction to the guy, he now took me to my office, it was meant to be a library but it was not arrange, the books were packed in bags, the chairs packed on top of each other, the man left me there, and said that that am a librarian, i should know how to arrange it. i waited for the place to be cleaned by the cleaners which took like 1 week and for that whole week, i was always looking at the time, wondering when it will be 4pm so that i can escape, though my novels keept me busy, though.

After the 1wk, it was work, work, work, at least to set up the place which i have done since.

I resumed thinking with no idea of what i was supposed to do. I did not know I was to start the new department. I was only given a system, files with no one to tell me what was happening. While trying to crack my head as to how to go about it, some clients came in and were shouting on top of their voices threatening to beat who was on the seat. Somehow(miracle i guess), i got them calmed down and promised we'd get back to them within the week. They even left cracking jokes about what a little girl can do to an angry man. My boss(a white guy) was just grinning from ear to ear and said in a low tone ' welcome on board' and gave me a thumbs up.

I grabbed the job offer because the pay was great. On my first day at work, I was dressed in my best suit. On getting to work, I figure out that no one seem to care about my dressing, they were all looking very casual. I was a bit over-dressed.

My to-be colleagues greeted me as if they were thinking in their head "what's this sh*t doing here" but I was thinking in my own head "you people have just started". I was taken around the company to be introduce to everyone, my legs shaking under me.

Then I was given some massive documents to read, didn't understand a single word, I started asking myself, "How did I get myself into this?".

But you know as Nigerians, we can withstand pressure far more than a typical oyinbo person, so I hung in there. Gradually my colleagues started "liking" me and started showing me how the system works and now I can bet I've got the best job I've ever held.

Scared because it was a contract position and was surprised i got the job because they wanted someone with 5 yrs experience and i had only 3 yrs. The guys were friendly and my line manager was also cool. The company had no documentation whats so ever(only a few good ones) and its was hard trying to understand what was going on. Luckily after lunch one of the guys came over to my desk and we had a brief discussion and he told me 'yes i know the document's crap' and we laughed. He spent bout 2 hrs with me showing me how the system works and showed me a few TRDs. Took some of the docs i could access and read on the way home. Got better understanding of the whole system by the time i got to work the next day, All thanks to the dude i spoke to because i was sure i wasnt going to go back there the next day.

For me I kept kicking myself and asking why I ever committed to such a crappy job. I lasted a few months in the company (global co-op: name with-held) and quit! Chikena!
