IBs,Stockbrokerage,Auditing Career Paths - Which Serves Best In The Long Term?

Hi all,

Av been away from the house for quite a while, story plenty, will come to that l8a.

This ques goes esp to the experienced, humane and truthful-with-d-answer persons in the house (eg TOS)

For an ambitious guy trying to ascend to higher realms later in his career, esp MNCs; will a job offering/audit experience (say some 3yrs and abv) in a medium size audit firm like Dafinone or some name like FH audit you ve probably not heard of, get him to progress on to MNCs or a path of say some IBs like Vetiva, Greenwich(doing research or CF) and some other known stockbrokerage firms, considering the economic weather and its unlikely nature to clear soon,as a consideration yardstick for both senarios.Which path will you advise and pls give concrete reasons.

Thank you in anticipation of your kind and well thought through replies.

NB

the guy is qualified for both senarios-ie for stkbrokerage, nigerian CIS and Auditing, ICAN ACA.

I have seen guys move from investment banking into top MNCs, but the time-tested route is the Audit route. Audit companies, especially the likes of KPMG, PWC, and maybe Akintola Williams, have proved to be sound training grounds for people that turn out to be high fliers in finance and management roles in top companies, including MNCs. A close friend of mine joined Shell from an investment banking institution in 2008 and he confessed that majority of colleagues that also made teh recruitment were from audit companies like KPMG and PWC. Apart from MNCs, products of audit companies like PWC and KPMG are usually hot and easily move to other high paying jobs after a couple of years or more in audit company. That said, I'm not too sure whether Dafinone and FH audit qualify to be categorized as part of this 'time-tested route'

IBs are also good medium to start, if you can withstand the rigour. For stockbrokerage, I think it's too narrow. Stockbroking experience has little relevance in Finance functions of MNCs, compared to Audit background. So, other factors held constant, a person with audit background has higher chance of being picked by MNCs ahead of someone with stockbroking background. Just my opinion. This may be wrong.

I dont think Dafinone is a bad place to start for an ambitious person, though one of the so called "Big-4" would have provided a stronger platform to do that. If IB is your area of preference, audit, transaction service, or anywhere within the finance service division of a promiment audit firm such Dafinone can give a headstart to working in the IB of any MNC.

From personal expeience, couple of my friends moved to different MNCs after spending 3-5 years with audit firms. Tbh, not all of them worked with the Big-4. Working with a good accounting firm would have given you an opportunity to have experience of working in different sectors including stockbroking and IB, unless the firm is so small that it does not have any MNC as client. Fortunately, the subject of your post is already qualified which is an advantage as far as employers are concerned.

Finally, I am not going to advise your friend to either choose IB or stockbroking as this should not be a decision for an outsider to make for someone. Only you know the area you are passionate about and what gives you satisfaction. No one told me to specialise in management accounting but I made that decision because i considered myself as a true strategist and not an auditor. Though I am not an auditor today but the experience of working in an accounting firm is something I will forever cherish.

I hope I've been able to help.

Jarus and TOS have said it all

The audit firms will cook you and make you a ready made person wherever you wanna go. I didnt do audit but passed through a consulting firm b4 moving to IB and today i still thank God for the exposure and training i got from consulting.

Ill advise anybody to start his/her career in any of the bif 4 cos the experience cannot be paralled anywhere else.

Investment Banking is tedious ma brother, its killing and just like Jarus , im thinking of either relocating abroad or moving to Abuja to a more subtle environment. I think pay wise, IB may put you on a higher pedestal compared to the audit/consulting firms but hey, experience shd come first b4 any other thing.

welcome back bro and where have you been?

I must be getting old! Your post seems to be so full of acronyms that one might need a thesaurus to understand it. What do you mean by MNC and CF?

Back to your question, I think it depends on what you'll like to do in future and where you are in your career trajectory. Where do you see yourself, say in the next 10 years?

This is what I'll do if I were in the same situation:

I'll choose auditing in a big 4 (not Dafinone or FH what?) if I don't want to specialise in any industry now and I want to specialise in Audit or Financial mgt. Someone starting from financial audit can end up as a CEO,a Finance Director, a Chief Accountant, a Chief Internal Auditor, A partner in an audit firm, a business unit manager. All the foregoing are endpoints for the purpose of illustration. It does not mean all auditors will end up that way. A good number of auditors will end up just as auditors!

I'll choose Vetiva or Greenwich if I want a career in investment banking (which is actually very good). It actually depends on what role you're being offered there! If you're being offer roles say; dealer, analyst, research, etc. I can go on but you can start here. http://www.wikijob.co.uk/wiki/investment-banking. Like my example in audit above, you can end up as a CEO of a bank, a head of Treasury of a company or you might end up in the role you started with.

Everything depends n your ambition and your drive and how well you prepare yourself for higher responsibilities. While it is good to look at economic climate in choosing a career, you certainly don’t look at short time climate in arriving at your decision.
