Telecoms Job Offer In Kano- Should I Go?

My friend a Lagosian, and just got offered a Telecoms job in Kano and wants to know: What's it like? Is it safe? I hear Kano is the Lagos of the North but with all we hear in the news, what are the prospects for a yuppie like him?

Pls include accommodation costs, are there good joints to hang out? Is he even allowed to hang out?

Thanks

Men!!  Kano is highly volatile. One minute the streets are peaceful in that laid-back, dusty atmosphere of the north, the next minute someone is being slaughtered like a ram in full view of the public & all these fundamentalists running riot with blood all over their hand & clothes.

Tell ur friend to stay away unless the offer is so juicy its hard to resist. And if he goes he should stick as much as possible to the Sabongari areas where southerners/northern christians stay.

Try not to make himself conspicuous or anything, if he goes & secures accommodation in the midst of the core Hausa Muslims, that's as good as committing suicide. When they start their civil unrest they will just slaughter him like an animal. Just drum that into his ears.

Its true that beauty is really in the eye of the beholder, apart from the fact that those pictures were taken with high def camera, it pictured only the beautiful places in Kano, However I would not advice a non Muslim to stay there, I was in Kano for 8months, I enjoyed my stay, except for the constant blackout (Power) and fear of Christian-haters maiming me at any time because I stand at my balcony with my shorts and get very nasty looks, and if u wear their gown, they will call u a hypocrite. I resided beside a mosque and lived in constant fear, when I got transferred out of Kano I was liberated, but with this Boko-Haram issue, I fear for your friend o! There is a level of decay in every state in Nigeria, Kano has more of it, don't be fooled by those pictures, however if the offer for the job is very attractive, then let your friend take it, Its good to gamble sometimes, He may enjoy the place tho.

@marissa,

How come there are no pix of al-majiris, the dreaded foot soldiers of religious riots? How about the Ba-shiga houses?

A non-northerner should be prepared for the culture shock. Nothern cities are largely land mass centre-beautified by the colonialists. The people are still steeped in primitiveness and unnerving.

Has the city ever witnessed religous riot? If yes, there is the probability of a historical rewind. If no, been situated in the north where there is a conspiracy to shariarize everyone, there exist a probability of religous disturbance.

If you have hearth, you can go.

You are silly. When was the last time you have hear that the southners attacked the northners that based in the south states. North is the worst part of the country I can never live. If a little thing happen, all those useless northners muslims take it upon innocents southners that relocated to the north and the christians. Yet they will come out says islam is a peaceful religion my foot. Northners are the reason Nigeria is backward today. What ever is going with the militants in the south, I will support them because all the oil wealth suppose to stay in the instead all those big fat belly from the north transfer the money that met for the south states into their bank. I will support anything stating that Nigeria should divid, I said it.

If there is no uprising, Kano is s nice place to live in. Just make sure you live within Sabon Gari.

The only problem will be if your office is located away from sabon gari.

Be careful on Fridays because the riots start from the mosques. I served in Kano and nothing happened within that year but the following year there was a bloodshed.

Good luck!

Your friend should just come down to Kano. I was not in Kano, I have been in Kano for twelve years now, and I can tell you that it is a god place to live. If there is anyway I could help when he comes in, I won't hesitate. Reach me on precmage@yahoo.com if you think he would need anything. Only, he might need to raise the budget on accommodation now

Na dis kind attitude dey pull nigeria back most of the people here are just yapping they've never been anywhere near the north but are mouthing nonsense when there was crisis in idi araba and other parts of lagos it didnt stop hausa people from taking jobs in the south and with all the kidnappings in the south south there is still a robust hausa community there and they didnt leave even after the militants declared the northeners are their enemies fact is kano like lagos is prone to ethnic violence but generally kano is safer than lagos

You cannot even pay me at this point to live anywhere in the north. The fact that there are white people there even proves my point. You know they have to get their adrenaline flowing so they can have an excuse to shout whoo hoo. You will not see them back packing through uselu, Benin city. Boko Haram is too fresh on my mind. 800 people dead in a few weeks and yet people should be expected to fill safe. That's whole freaking village.

Tell your friend to go with an open mind, he can adjust! I served in Kano, though it was in a village school, I came out better off than most of my peers that hustled for city postings.

As stated, just beware of where you reside. Your office will definately not be in a slum area, so you're covered there as well.

My fiancee is relocating to Kano as well, co-incidentally, to take up a telecoms appointment, but she's not fazed though she's from South-south.

I wl suggest u go since its 4 job bt if ur going there to start biz,i wl say dnt go.

U see,u cn loose everytin u've made for years in a few minutes if ur a biz man in north. I hav a friend dat lost 4 shops and other properties in last jos crisis,nw he's a bus driver. He managed 2 use d little he had on bank to purchase d vehicle.

So wat am saying is dat since ur going for a job, just accept it and dnt invest on properties there.

Most of the people bad mouthing kano have probably never been to the north(abuja is not in the north) every place has its good side nd bad side was it not in lagos that OPC was killing hausa nd igbo people? Most nigerian cities are basically safe just choose the right part of town to live in dont expect to be safe during crisis if you live in a ghetto. Just tell your friend to give it a try if he doesnt like the place he can always leave

@poster's friend

Guy

I live in lagos myself, got posted to kano in 2007 for youth service,got a job afterwards and stayed back.

Kano is a wonderful place and u get to enjoy ur life based on ur pocket, from the normal shark joints scatterd around sabon-gari to good hangout spots like french cafe,lebanon's club,mingles(revitalised),FAAN staff club e.t.c  to hotels around, Tahir,Niimah,Royal Tropicana to a lot of 1daful eateries.

Though not like lagos were u can live and shark anywhere, it's kinda regulated here.You can stay in Noman's land, Badawa New layout,Hadeija road,Nassarawa GRA e.t.c

Life is a little normal here and people act sane, no bus rush, no mad traffic and lot more

Just come around we need more correct guys to love-vendor up the environ
