BMW X5 Vs Mercedes-Benz ML - Which Would You Choose?

Looking at both these SUV's. Bar costs, which would you go for, and what would give one the edge over the other?

I'm looking at the first generation of both the above SUV's.

*For the sake of comparison, and due to their mention, the Audi Q7 and Volkswagen Touareg have been added to the group.*

The question has to be qualified with location both SUV’s are exceptional in my opinion, however, the one I would choose to drive in the UK may not be the one I’d like to drive in Nigeria. Let me explain.

1st choice the Merc. ML63 AMG, in my opinion this rides is insane, it nearly cost me my licence the acceleration is just mad and the ease at which it can double the speed limit just crazy. What strikes me is the way it does it, sticking to the corners and tarmac like GLUE. Bad points it drinks , drinks and drinks the juice possibly worse than a hummer H2.

The question is would I drive it in Nigeria, No Way, firstly, the suspension is too stiff, you will feel every bump, gallop, undulation in our sorry to say quite poor roads. The X5 and I’m talking the M sport, I have not driven but I guess the sports suspension and dampers will leave me feeling like I rode on the back of a 404 pickup.

My suspicion not deduction is that the Q7 with its air suspension set up could have the more compliant ride and therefore the greater comfort, which would suit my commute from Lagos to Warri – No Shakin !!! And therefore my No. 1 choice.

Finally, in my experience the SUV with the most luxurious, comfortable and compliant ride on our roads that I have personally tested is the Range Rover Vogue and please that does not include the Range Rover Sport . However, vanity wins sometimes and the Range to me is a bit of an Old man’s car a bit too conservative and of course I voted Labour.

Q7 Wins it 4 me, I wonder if I bought, one used it for 4wks would I be able to sell it in good time. When it comes to SUV’s we can have very parochial views, so not too many people in 9Ja may want the Q7.

Gentlemen, have you considered the year of the cars you are comparing?

Will it be fair to compare the '02 benz with the 05 BMW?

See attached pics of the '09 model of both cars and give your honest judgment.

Do you now see why th Benz is called the ultimate machine?

i have driven both cars but the X5 technology is light years ahead of the merc. i currently own the 06 X5 4.4(facelift) and it is bloody fast.better running cost, maintainance, residual value, better mileage on gas, its far better than the merc all round- no comparison! beats the touareg 4.2, floors the bulky Q7, no competition for the first gen!

^^^ That's an interesting slant on things, Komekn. I don't reside in Nigeria, so can't say how the sportier SUV's will fare on Nigerian roads. Will be interesting to get comments from a different (Nigerian) perspective.

In comparing these two SUV’s there is emphasis in speed, agility and power, however if we bring into this discussion the context of location then things become dramatically different.

Let me explain the Range Rover Sport, ML63 and the X5 M sport, the suspension is just too hard its road biased, having driven all three on UK roads, my view is if I drive my usual route Lagos to Warri, which is far from smooth tarmac I will arrive fatigued and somewhat worn out on account of that hard sports suspension.

What I really want to know is, how well can they the X5 and ML chop and jump gallop, for instance I remember driving a Range vogue(not sport) in 9Ja, the air suspension just glided over all those bumps, the ride was so compliant it felt so, so good. I can say for a certainty that the X5 ride was no where as smooth and compliant as the Range. I have not driven the ML in 9Ja so I cannot make an informed deduction, so those who have your comments please.

Finally my choice the Q7 4.2 V8.

I thought i was the only one who noticed.Personally, i was disappointed with the cayenne from the get go.When i heard the first gen was coming out years ago, i expected the shape to be similar to the current FX50 or X6. . .the only "Porsche" look about it are the head lights, brake pads/calipers and the interior.Every other thing is VW and their current model doesn't cut it at all.

In between, what's the Porsche and main streaming these days.As if the cayenne adventure wasn't bad enough, they have now released a Porsche sedan. What's next? Ferrari,Lamborghini and Koenngisegg will follow suit and produce a Ferrari SUV? This truly the end of the world!

If you're mostly concerned about power, I would say that you should go for the 2011 X5 as the power on paper increased by 50HP and 100 lbs ft of torque. IRL, the difference between the XDrive48i and the XDrive50i will be night and day! But I'm sure that the deals to be had on the 2010 are going to be crazy which will make them hard to pass up. But keep in mind that the 2011 will be more desirable in the future and that will unreasonably depress the price of the 2010.

My only hope is that the High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) issues that have been plaguing the N54s have been resolved in the N55s because the HPFP will probably be the same as in the V8TT. But I've not yet heard horror stories about the V8TT. Regardless, I will be getting the XDrive50i and I will be modifying it past X5M power levels.

I drove the Q7 when it first came out and wasn't impressed. My guess is that some of it had to do with it being a full size SUV and the X5 being mid-sized.

I don’t like the fact that the new Cayenne got smaller and is now looking like a Hyundai (nothing against Hyundai’s). I guess I have to wait to see it IRL.

Yeah agreed it is expensive being a porsche but the superiority in performance that you are claiming does not justify the price difference with its competition and one thing about cars their resale values will tell you alot about the publics perception of a car and i do not think the resale value of both the ml and x5 i sbetter than that of the cayenne and i thought i just heard they had recalled one of their models recently.

That is becos you are in nigeria where everyone dies to own a benz car so you see lots of them mostly in bad condition, there is nothing boring about the old design.

Jeez ! ain't anybody here seen the PORSCHE CAYENNE ? Well, we in Germany knows that the Cayenne is the King of all German SUVs and it leads with a big gap ! But then, I'm not surprised, I haven't seen much Porsche Rides in Naija since I've been visiting.

The Porsche Cayenne is the ultimate of all German SUVs, beats all the rest in all categories during the recent SUV tests. Its not for people with class or that want class. Its for the Elite and Style Pioneers.

@Siena

Let me first say i'm impressed by your wealth of knowledge about cars, i hope u'll continue to share your knowledge and experience on this forum.

I believe when you started this thread, u wanted people to choose based on their personal preference and/or experience with either of the cars.

But it seems some people are choosing based on sentiments, which has led to some petty arguments and name calling.

In order to make the poll more of objective, can i suggest that u specify some criteria to judge the cars by. E.g. Overall driving experience, off-road capability, aesthetics, maintainability, performance, etc.

Personally, I'll take the beemer anyday. I think they go the extra mile in making their cars more enjoyable for the driver.

Lol. Ain't you the one accusing me of saying ''an car''? How come you are now changing the contest, Arschloch? Lol.

You are the one that need to save face not me since i could care less about you and your forum rantings. I pity the ones that occupy the same house with you.

Do not avoid the initial question that got us to this point which is ''tell us what makes a vehicle an SUV''

@ Ojame, nice explanation but i only partially agree with you. Problem is that the ''lady in her period'' above was actually accusing me of saying ''an car'' and was oblivious of the ''enthusiast'' that follwed. She didn't call me out on saying ''an car enthusiast'' which means that she was clueless as to what the correct concept in that statement should be.

Mumu Ugly Diva, since you are so quick to comment on how smart or silly a person is online, let us both, in this thread post our ''University Degree Certificates'' here and let us compare who is actually the more intelligent person between us? Please.

And i mean degrees from Universities where people actually write ''real exams'' not some funny multi-choice nonsense called exams or degrees from a university in a failed system where people buy their certificates like Nigeria (ESUT, UNILAG, LASU and all those trash).

Could we please?

Lmao.

I have always chosen BMW ahead of Mercedes. BM is a machine, smooth and elegant. M class does not have that sort of finese, but i think the newer models are trying. But its BM all the way.

Q7 is another cool vehicle that is competing for my love for BM. That car is also great,

Sienna , all of that is just semantics ,it is not proven that a monocoque bodyshell is better than a ladder chassis ,if that was the case it would have become the standard in the market , these cars are off-roaders as well and mud-plugging is part of what we expect from them especially in nigeria.

@Siena,

In Nigeria the ML is more popular and better to manage.

I use an ML and i've hardly had problems with it.

Not so for my friends who had X5's. They always complained of electrical faults.

One even towed her car from Benin to Lag as the car stopped moving at the middle of the road.

Take stats in Nigeria and you'll find they are more ML's. Go to the ports or car marts.

I know you like the beamer but seriously i'd take 1 ML instead of 2 BM's

BlueDiva, in the looks and reliability department, the BMW is a better car than the Mercedes Benz. When I worked as a senior Service Technician at Mercedes-Benz Chelmsford, we had a lot of ML's in for warranty work. We also lost clients, who had bought the ML's brand new from us, but ended up trading in their cars for X5's, as soon as their original warranties were due to run out. No one wanted to get caught out with a huge repair bill post warranty.

The main issues back then were auto transmission failures, and small, but persistent electrical gremlins. The X5 is more popular for a reason - it's a better driver's car all round. When picking a car, I look beyond the badge, and delve deeper into what constitutes a good all rounder. In recent years, the Mercedes-Benz brand has declined. Another aspect which affects the drive of the ML, and makes it less car-like in terms of feel, is the fact it's still traces its origin to the original Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon, which like the Range Rover, has a truck-based ladder chassis, to which the body is bolted. This of course adds to the weight, and is one of the reasons the ML is quite a thirsty beast compared to the X5, and is considerably slower.

The X5 has a monocoque bodyshell, like most modern SUV's, and this make it a lot more agile on the open round, smoother to drive, quieter inside and of course better on fuel. If you drive an ML 430 V0 vs an X5 3,0L I6, you'll find the X5 feels as sharp as the much smaller E34 / 39 5 series, which is a much smaller, and lighter RWD car. The ML in comparison feels heavy, ponderous, slower and not much fun to drive at all, despite having the advantage of 2 extra cylinders, and a 1,3L advantage over the X5.

@Ojame,

You dey mind the 'intelligent' bandit.

All he needed to do was call his error a typo.

That's what every smart person will do if they goof.

Now he has further told us he knows nothing.

Bro, you just shot yourself on the foot with that lecture.

I hope to God you're not a teacher, chei.

My 3 yr old daughter has a better understanding of elementary English.

Please sir, save face and exit the thread quietly.

That's the honourable thing to do. . .LOL

@topic.

The BM is leading.

It might be more popular but not better than the Mercedes.

0

I hear you, BlueDiva.

And I understand about your friends. What you do not know are specifics of the issues they've had, or their maintainance culture. I tend to speak from my indepth knowledge of engineering. A ladder chassis is no substitute for a monocoque bodyshell, unless the car's going to spend the greater part of its life mud-plugging.

The popularity of a certain model in Nigeria does not make it the best. Nigerians in general like names, and "status". They also like to stick with what they feel comfortable with. In Nigeria, the Toyota Camry is very popular, more so than a BMW, Audi or Mercedes, Does that make it a better car?

Ha ha ha ha ha!!!! She was trying to call me out on my grammar and made a mess of herself. God i am actually rolling on the floor here, laughing out loud, literally.

Madam, whoever taught you basic elementary english, should refund your tuition asap!! You have been fooled. Lol.

Let me teach you a little grammar and it goes like this; ''an'' in my statement  actually refers to ''enthusuast'' and not ''car'' since that is the dominant noun that the other noun ''car'' is qualifying. So ''a'' and ''an'' will almost always refer to the noun at the end of two combined nouns and not the one at the front. Got it yet? Lmao!!!.

Because everyone around you says ''a car enthusiast'', does not mean it is correct. You wanna bet on that?

If basic grade 1 grammar like the one above is so difficult for you to grasp, how do you intend to know what makes a vehicle an SUV. Ha Ha Ha !!!

@Siena - since you like Audi so much, how do you think the RS5 is going to fare against the M3. They’ve had about 3 years to come up with an M3 killer; do you think they can pull it off? I’ll give you one thing though, the A5 line is "pretty"; hopefully, the RS5 is more masculine IRL:-)

It is widely known that Jeremy only favors British brands. I only watch him because of his wittiness and he's not as biased as Best Motoring in JP. Find me a video of him not saying anything negative about any model within German brands even after initially praising them.

@ All

The X5 with all the hype hasn't beaten the ML any knockout blow here, it just trickled past, even despite the passionate appeal by fans- harakiri etc, lol; somehow in line with my earlier post of reality on ground.

Siena is very much in order by talking about the Audi Q7. Its no secret that that is his first choice if circumstances were different- check other threads. He needs genuine opinion, so we bring in related items; that's why the thread is hot- so interesting.

@ Wallie: Jeremy of Topgear doesn't hate everything German. His review of Audi A8 and Volkswagen Touareg were topnotch some years back. I don't share your view there.

Bottomline is that folks tend to be emotional about what they like and their opinion. The Audi Q7 has authority.

Why are you quoting me?

Where did i ever mention Touareg and Audi?

All these people who write before thinking.

0

I brought the Q7 and Touareg into the mix, as they were mentioned. And, I also wanted to promote more debate. Virtually everyone on here knows I'm an Audi fanatic, so my choice of the X5 shows I'm not biased. I've based my choice on a mix of performance, reliability, affordability and looks. I also tend to part base my opinions on technicalities, and as a qualified engineer, I fee I have what it takes to know what to look for when choosing any sort of vehicle, from a micro car to an 18-wheel rig.

The Q7 would have been my choice, and in terms of looks and performance, it would be my natural choice. However, it's the newest contender here, and as such has not really had a chance to prove itself in the reliability stakes, and in reality, I can't afford one, without resorting to finance, which I dislike.

Note the Q7 is one of the fastest and most unique of SUV's - the 6,0L V12 has the worlds most powerful turbodiesel engine, and the only 12-cylinder turbodiesel fitted to a passenger car, power output is 500 PS (370 kW; 490 hp) and 1,000 N·m (740 lb·ft). The 0-60 (mph) is 5.5 seconds, a figure most would attribute to a supercar!
